Colleges and Universities License Oracle's Scalable, Reliable Collaboration Tools
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., - Oracle
(Nasdaq: ORCL) today announced that leading higher education institutions have
selected Oracle(R) Collaboration Suite for their campus communication and
collaboration needs. Universities and colleges worldwide are using Oracle
Collaboration Suite to provide faculty, students, staff and alumni with
advanced technology, communication and learning tools while upgrading and
consolidating aging systems, and decreasing IT costs.
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly);
University of California, Berkeley; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill;
Cornell University; Cegep de Matane of Quebec; Lansing Community College;
University of Manchester; University of Gothenburg and Tokyo University are
among the institutions taking advantage of Oracle Collaboration Suite's
scalability and functionality.
Cal Poly selected Oracle Collaboration Suite to provide its
20,000 students and faculty with e-mail, online calendar and file-sharing
capabilities.
"Our students are excited about using the new products," said
Jerry Hanley, vice provost and chief information officer, Cal Poly. "They
see
the need for reliable, first-class software on their campus as much as we do.
After researching the options, we determined that Oracle Collaboration Suite
is the best product on the market to suit our communication needs."
With Oracle Collaboration Suite, Cal Poly students and faculty can access
e-mail and calendar appointments from any web interface. Cal Poly also
consolidated several legacy systems onto a single platform and significantly
reduced costs by using Linux on industry-standard hardware.
The University of California, Berkeley selected Oracle Collaboration Suite
to replace non-integrated calendaring systems.
"Staff and faculty were finding it increasingly difficult to manage
schedules that included classes, conferences, office hours, vacations,
lectures, etc. on antiquated, unreliable systems," said Jeff McCullough,
principal programmer in the UC Berkeley Computer Center. "The ability to
view
schedules and easily set meetings on one efficient system is proving to be a
tremendous time-saver, and is improving communications and collaboration
campus-wide."
Oracle Collaboration Suite will enable university faculty to augment
classroom instruction with web conferencing. Students will be able to
collaborate on team projects, papers and presentations online with web
conferencing and file-sharing capabilities. Universities will have the ability
to use Oracle Collaboration Suite to reach into their communities with
distance learning programs, alumni programs, and community calendars
accessible with integrated email, voice mail, web conferencing and
file-sharing capabilities.
"Academia represents the ultimate collaborative environment. For these
institutions, collaboration is not a luxury but an imperative," said
Rob Koplowitz, senior director, Oracle Collaboration Suite. "They are looking
for new ways to drive down costs and drive up productivity with innovations
like virtual classrooms, mobile campuses and distance learning. With Oracle
Collaboration Suite there is the opportunity to provide students, staff and
faculty with the right tools to work together."
