The University of Iowa will welcome its incoming first year class and returning students with a week of welcome activities, including the first-ever block party at the UI president's home.
UI President David Skorton and his wife, professor Robin Davisson, invite students to the President's Residence at 102 Church St. for refreshments, music and award-winning UI student entertainment while enjoying the beautiful grounds. Among the guests will be UI football coach Kirk Ferentz, Iowa Idol finalists Cheyanne Boddicker and Katelyn Hubbell, and the winning skits from the Greek
Week follies, from Alpha Chi Omega and Pi Kappa Phi. The Block Party will be
held Saturday, Aug. 27, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Other Welcome Week activities this year include such annual events as Night
Games, the Hawkeye Welcome Tailgate, entertainment from comedian-hypnotist Chuck
Milligan and numerous social events and meetings introducing students to many
of the university's student-run organizations as well as academic departments
and student services office's.

will show at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Illinois Room. In the Wheelroom, bands Bad
Fathers and Public Property will perform following an open mic session that

Hawkeye Welcome Tailgate -- Students can participate in interactive games,
win prizes and enjoy free food. The Cheer Squad and Herky will also attend,

"Student Engagement: What's In It For Me?" -- Ginny Carroll, CEO
of InGINuity, a consulting firm aimed at the needs of colleges and universities,
will discuss the benefits for students of getting involved in their campus and
community.

Student Job Fair -- Students can learn about part-time and work-study job opportunities
from on- and off-campus employers.

Friday, Aug. 26
--4:30 to 8:30 p.m., Welcome Week & Dance Marathon Present: A Slice of
Iowa
A fundraiser for Dance Marathon, one of the largest university student-run
philanthropic organizations in the country. Enjoy pizza, soda and ice cream
for a nominal fee, while enjoying a Battle of the Bands. Proceeds will be used
by Dance Marathon to benefit the UIHC Children's Hospital of Iowa.

Open Your Eyes interactive theatrical performance -- The GTC Dramatic Dialogue
troupe will perform a variety of theatrical vignettes that dramatize such issues
as crime, sexual assault, responsible alcohol use, health and others. The interactive
performance will help students deal with those and other issues they will face
during their college careers.
In addition, several campus direction booths will help new students find their
way around campus on Monday, Aug. 22, and Tuesday, Aug. 23. The booths will
be staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Pentacrest, Hubbard Park, Iowa
Memorial Union and on the T. Anne Cleary Walkway.
Welcome Week 2005 is coordinated by the Office of Student Life, Orientation
Services, the Department of Residence Services, IMU Marketing and Design, UI
Sports Marketing, and Recreational Services, in conjunction with the Office
of the Vice President for Student Services. Sponsors include University Life
Centers at the Iowa Memorial Union, the Office of Admissions, University of
Iowa Student Government, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Associated
