RICHARD DEVINE IS BERKLEE TEACHER FOR A WEEK

AUDIO ARCHITECT RICHARD DEVINE – REMIXED APHEX TWIN, DESIGNED SOUND FOR APPLE, SCORED COMMERCIALS FOR NIKE – IS BERKLEE TEACHER FOR A WEEK, APRIL 10 - 14

Pioneering electronica artist, producer, sound designer, and 5.1 surround mixer Richard Devine – who remixed Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy," designed sound for Apple, and scored commercials for Nike and Touchstone Pictures – will spend a week at Berklee College of Music, April 10 – 14, 2006. The department, faculty, and students are looking forward to an intense week with Devine, hosting him in the classrooms, labs, and the college's recently completed surround studio complex.

"Richard has a depth of knowledge and expression that really spans our curriculum and interests. He is one of this generation's expedition leaders, their advance man, an explorer," said Music Technology Division Dean, Stephen Croes.

A self-described "audio architect in search of the most interesting sounds on the planet," Richard Devine, 26, is known for his layered and heavily processed sound, combining influences from old and modern electronic music. He grew up playing classical piano, and later took up drums, bass, and jazz guitar. As an Atlanta College of Art student in 1993, Devine first started experimenting with CSound and other powerful computer-based music applications. He would go on to code several FFT applications in SuperCollider, a programming language for real-time audio synthesis.

After he was given an endorsement from legendary British electronica duo, Autechre, Devine was recruited by Warp Records to put out tracks, tour, and remix songs by other Warp artists. Since 2001, he has released four full-length albums, including Assect:Dsect (Schematic, 2003), and Cautella (Sublight, 2005). Devine has designed sound patches for Apple and Native Instruments software and has scored commercials for Nike and Touchstone Pictures. Currently, he is creating music for 5.1 and 12.1 surround environments.

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over half a century, the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and non-performance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing 70-plus countries, and a music industry "who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today — and tomorrow.
