Following the announcement of the nominations for the 2004 BRIT Awards with MasterCard, music critics have been praising the eclectic choice of nominees. The press coverage received has been unanimous in its verdict – British music is better than ever.
The Sun’s Victoria Newton said that this years BRIT Awards are set to be one of the most exciting awards shows to date, stating that “The breadth of the nominations shows just what a vibrancy and strength there is in our music at the moment”
The Daily Mail lead with a Dido picture on the front page, stating that ‘Dido will light up the awards”. Adrian Thrills gave a run down of this years BRIT Awards and the process of the nominations saying “As one of the thousands-or-so members of the BRITS voting academy – made up of journalists, broadcasters, retailers, and musicians – I was heartened (and surprised) by a refreshing onus on new names and genuine talent.” The Times rock critic David Sinclair echoed this in his detailed analysis of the structure of the BRIT Academy.
In the Daily Star’s ‘HOT’ coverage of the BRIT nominations, Joe Mott said “Last year was massive for British music – and the BRIT Awards promises to be a top night”
The Daily Mirror 3AM girls were equally as optimistic commenting that “This is going to be one of the closest called BRIT races for years”
David Smyth of the Evening Standard got behind the BRITs nominations by pointing out “This year’s BRIT Awards nominations show new signs of credibility”.
The Daily Telegraph ran with ‘Dido and The Darkness to shine the brightest at the BRITs’ and Neil McCormick sung the praises of BRIT nominee and newcomer Amy Winehouse who he describes as “Flirty, funny, sarcastic, heartbreaking, and extraordinarily worldly wise” and “one of the most exciting and original talents in the UK.”
Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian reviewed Monday nights nominations launch saying that it “emphasised British music’s ability to constantly regenerate itself” and hailed the return of British Rock in the form of ‘The Darkness’.
The 2004 BRIT Awards with MasterCard will be held at Earls Court on Tuesday 17 February and broadcast ‘as live’ on ITV1.
