The name Lester Barnes you may not have heard of, yet Lester’s work you would without doubt have heard at some point or another. Lester is one of the most prolific sound to picture Jedi knights in the business!
With clients on his discography such as Tomb Raider, Burger King, Team America, Audi, The Independent, BBC, ITV, O2 “Big Brother” and Swatch (I could list here all day) it’s not surprising you’d have heard the great man’s work and had no idea he was “tweaking” your emotion.
Being a sound to picture composer is all about extracting the emotional content out of moving images, that’s the point, Lester has made a career out of it, and whilst some fancy graphics and moving images might conjure up thoughts, it is without question the sound track which “taps into” (excuse the spinal tap pun) the psyche of us all.
It is the grinding stones, the screeching tires, the comic melodies and the pregnant pauses which, of course, evoke strong feelings and sensations. This is Lester’s playground and he is up there as one of the best, if not the best in the business.
I caught up with Lester in his West End media studio, just off of Oxford Street London, and a fine geographic location it is for a man who packs a solid audio punch.
Lester is one of the most likeable and friendliest people I have come across recently. He is open, honest, and typical of audio engineers, he is patient and unassuming, and certainly has the force.
Lester doesn’t need to verbally “show-off”, nor posture with body language, or use “smart” comments, his music definitely does the talking. It was a refreshing change to be in the company of someone so down to earth with a beaming smile, in what can be a business with so many not of Lester’s nature.
I hit the record button on my m-audio micro track to capture Lester in order to share the man’s knowledge, the outcome was perfect, and Lester came up with the goods.
