Post Logic Studios announced it has completed the digital intermediate and film-out for "Clifford's Really Big Movie," a full-length animated feature produced by Scholastic Entertainment for Warner Bros.
The Post Logic Cinema Digital process allowed color correction to be precisely adjusted scene to scene and across the movie without the constraints of traditional color timing in the lab. The project, supervised by Cheryl Murphy for Scholastic Entertainment, also provided the filmmakers with virtually the only practical way to fine-tune the look and consistency of the film's visuals, which were assembled from a series of digital animation files produced overseas.
2K images were delivered to Post Logic Studios from Starburst Animation in Korea. After storing data to its DVS servers, Post Logic Studios assembled and conformed the material on its Quantel iQ system. Colorist Michael Underwood then performed the color correction digitally using the da Vinci 2K system, projecting to the 24-foot digital/35mm screen in Post Logic Studios' on-site theater. Color-timed 2K files were then recorded back out to the server and a film-out was done using Post Logic Studios' Celco Fury film recorder. The negative was sent to print, and a D5 master was also produced.
"Color correcting the reels in Post Logic Studios' digital intermediate screening theater gave the director, Robert Ramirez, and art director, Mike Humphries, detailed control over the movie's color palette despite the fact that all of the animation had been created thousands of miles away," Underwood said. "Without ever needing to send files out for painting or re-painting in the lab, we were able to bring the density and brightness in line and do a complete continuity run."
The advanced digital intermediate techniques Post Logic Studios used on Clifford also extended to on-the-fly colorization and effects creation to address very specific visual needs. When Clifford's eyes needed to be tweaked from yellow to bright white in several sequences, Underwood was able to isolate just these elements and adjust them across all of the related files. Similarly, while reviewing the color-timed media, the filmmakers decided that Clifford's big size might be accentuated by having the ground shake when the character walked. Post Logic Studios' iQ artist Matt Johnson maximized the flexibility of the digital intermediate process to create the corresponding effects, incorporate them into 25 scenes and simply update the color-timed master.
Launched last May, Post Logic Studios' leading-edge digital intermediate and digital mastering services have been used on major theatrical releases including Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 3D: Game Over." Scholastic's "Clifford's Really Big Movie" follows on the heels of the company's successful digital assembly and color timing work for another animated project, "Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights" for home video and DVD.
