Kagi Media, producer of pioneering Pro Audio training products, is pleased to
be hosting Grammy-winning engineer, mixer and producer Charles Dye's groundbreaking
Pro Tools mixing column Hard Disk Life at harddisklife.com. Dye’s Hard Disk
Life originally ran in DigiZine where it quickly became a valuable source of
reference for the audio community. It set out to teach mixing by breaking it
down to its component parts and devoting a column to each.
After the first few laid the groundwork, Dye began to mix a single song over
the following seven months. With each column he walked the reader through that
month’s instrument, plug-ins, settings, and reasoning behind his choices. It
became obvious from the beginning that Dye was willing to share techniques that
would normally be considered hard earned and well kept secrets. Yet, he demonstrated
time and again there was no aspect of the often seen black art of mixing he
was not willing to demystify.
Readers appreciate Dye’s ability to clearly explain normally hard to grasp concepts
in ways that make them easy to understand, as well as gaining insight behind
the creative process of a Grammy-winning mixer. Since the column’s debut the
response has been overwhelming, and today Hard Disk Life is still raved about
in internet forums. Readers praise it as inspirational for its encouraging words
leaving them feeling mixing is a craft they can learn and as a source of some
of the most educational material available on mixing. Some even proclaim to
re-read the entire series before every mix. And they all agree their mixing
skills have improved since reading Hard Disk Life.
Now, Kagi Media is bringing Hard Disk Life to an even wider audience. Jon Kagi,
creative director, recalls how the new launch of HardDiskLife.com came about.
“I already knew Charles Dye was a professional who embraced forward technology.
After all, he was the first mixer to have a #1 hit mixed entirely inside the
box. I recognized Charles as a great writer and communicator when I started
following the HDL column at Digidesign.com. I caught up with Charles when he
came through Seattle on a DigiWorld Tour where he was teaching a mixing Master
Class. I suggested that creating a website based on the vision of the HDL column
would be an excellent compliment to some of the stuff that we're doing at Kagi
Media.”

About Charles Dye
Grammy Award-winning engineer, mixer and producer Charles Dye began his engineering
career in 1992. Since that time he has mixed hits for Ricky Martin, Sammy Hagar,
Julio Iglesias, and Jon Bon Jovi, as well as recorded artists such as Aerosmith,
Lauryn Hill, Hanson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Gloria Estefan, among many
others.
In the last few years Dye has become a bit of a pioneer in the area of mixing
records on Pro Tools, evidenced by his mix of “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” as Dan
Daley said in Mix Magazine, “a milestone of technology: the first Number One
record to be done completely within a hard disk system. In addition to changing
the course of mainstream pop music, ‘La Vida’ may also turn out to be a pivot
point in how records are made.” Dye’s further commitment to Pro Tools and mixing
on it was demonstrated by his two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated engineering
and mixing of five additional songs on Martin’s album, including two additional
singles “Shake Your Bon Bon” and “Private Emotion.”
