From its humble beginnings in the South Bronx to the global, cultural and economic powerhouse it has become, hip hop has reshaped the world. VH1
documents this cultural explosion in a five-part series "And You Don't Stop:
30 Years of Hip Hop," premiering on Monday October 4 at 10PM*.
With never-before-seen footage, "And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip
Hop"
traces the history of this art form from "back in the day" to the
meteoric
rise and success of Russell Simmons' Def Jam label, to the gangsta rap wars,
how hip hop and Eminem conquered America. The five-part documentary concludes
with the new moguls who have come to define "bling bling."
"You can't overstate hip hop's effect on American youth," comments
executive-producer Russell Simmons. "There's a lot of young people from
Beverly Hills, the projects, the trailer parks, who've grown up on hip hop and
have understood the struggle directly, or listened to hip-hop their whole
lives and become sensitized to the plight of those poor people. So that's why
everybody relates to it so well."
"And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop" features exclusive new
interviews with such figures as Ice-T, OutKast, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Rick
Rubin, Chuck D, the Reverend Run, Fab 5 Freddie, Debbie Harry, DMC, the
Beastie Boys, Nas, Sylvia Robinson, Jimmy Iovine, Lyor Cohen, the Neptunes,
the Roots, Mary J. Blige, and MC Lyte as well as esteemed hip hop era authors
Nelson George, Cheo Coker, and Danyel Smith. Rounding out the narration are
historic interviews from Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, KRS-
One, and Ice Cube.

"And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop: Back in the Day"
Hr. 1
Hour one chronicles hip hop's birth in an impoverished and neglected section
of the Bronx and the establishment of the four elements of hip hop culture:
rapping, deejaying, break-dancing and graffiti. By the end of the hour, hip
hop is no longer confined to the ghetto. It has inspired a generation of
downtown rockers, begun to make inroads into the record business, ignited
feuds between some of its earliest stars and, back in the ghetto, at least
temporarily defused gang violence.

"And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop: Bring the Noise"
Hr. 2
Hour two the evolution of hip hop from an obscure and uncommercial New
York-based cottage industry into a national record business phenomenon. The
hour focuses on the rise of the decade's premier hip hop record label -
Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin's Def Jam -- and of such seminal artists as
Run-DMC, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, Will Smith and Public Enemy.

"And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop: Gangsta Gangsta"
Hr. 3
Hour three uncovers the rise of "gangsta rap" in Los Angeles and
the
simultaneous eclipse of "conscious rap" in New York - two styles inspired
by
the uncompromising black pride of Public Enemy. The show describes how NWA
emerged from Compton, California at a moment when crack cocaine was at its
devastating height in the black community. It also tells the story of the
origins of Dr. Dre, who went on to become not just the most influential record
producer in hip hop, but among the most successful in the history of American
popular music.

"And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop: Life After Death"
Hr. 4
Hour four begins by bouncing back from L.A. to New York where, some five
years after the emergence of NWA, the East Coast finally begins to develop its
own gangsta rappers, including Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan in addition to Biggie
Smalls. It details the infamous rivalry between Suge Knight's Death Row
Records -- home of Snoop, Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur -- and Puff Daddy's Bad Boy
Records, Biggie's label. The hour explains how the rivalry was hyped into a
supposed East Coast/West Coast "rap war," and how artists on both
sides
attempted to ease tensions even as Tupac and Biggie were murdered. The
episode concludes with the aftermath of the murders, the rise of P. Diddy,
Nas, and Jay-Z, and the era of flossing, glamour, and "bling-bling"
- much of
it an attempt (in the words of writer/editor Danyel Smith) to "fill the
hole
in the soul of hip hop" left by the deaths of Tupac and Biggie.

"VH1 News Presents: Freestyle"
Within the genre of hip hop lies an underground art practiced by lyricists
who read the dictionary, love poetry and rhyme at light speed. It is known as
freestyle, the art of the improvisational rap, where all lyrics are
extemporaneous, or "off the dome" in freestyle speak. More than 10
years in
the making, this special chronicles freestyle from its origins in cafes to the
individuals who pioneered the art form. The special also reveals freestyle
culture, from the cipher circles that freestylers use to hone their skills,
to
the famed battles, where the mix of rap and poetry are on full display. Some
of the world's most renowned freestylers - Supernatural, Craig-G, and Juice
will be featured in the special as VH1 opens a window onto a vibrant
subculture forging a new respect for hip-hop practiced for love, not money.
