At the occasion of the 117th AES convention in San Francisco, Alcons pro-ribbon technology made it’s official debut in the US market.
Represented by Transmission Lines distribution, the first ribbon-loaded Alcons systems have hit the road for an extensive demo tour on both east and west coast. With the very high interest in Alcons products from the US market, already since
our start 2 years ago, we’re very happy to have the products finally “on
the road” in the US!

The weekend before the AES, the Nordic Music Awards were held in Oslo, Norway.
Here a very large “The Ribbon“ line-array system was used to support
artists such as Robbie Williams, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Brian McFadden,
Westlife a.o. The system consisted of 78 Alcons LR16 line array cabinets, 16
flown LR16B bass cabinets and 12 ground stacked BF362 subs, powered by ALC controller-amplifiers.
The two front (left, right) clusters consisted of 24 x LR16 plus 8 x LR16B.
15 x LR16 cabinets were flown as side clusters. The large Alcons system was
comprised of the inventory of Audio One Norway and fellow “The Ribbon
Network” member, Electrosound from Sweden.
Another remarkable event within “The Ribbon Network”, Alcons’
dry-hire cooperation, was Project Fame in South-Africa. This televised reality
show was done by Matrix Sound of Johannesburg. Though a smaller project than
the Nordic Music Awards, this show was technically very challenging: The unsurpassed
“gain-before-feedback” of the LR16 line-array played a huge role
in delivering HiFi at concert SPL’s.

The final LR14 beta-test has taken place. For this, Alcons returned to the
venue where the first-ever shoot-out with Alcons took place (see news item February
‘04). The system has been put to the test in this highly reverberant hall,
next to another ultra-compact line-array. The results in horizontal coverage
(120-degree) as well as throw where very convincing and the system design was
approved to go into production.
And last, but definitely not least, Philip de Haan (our “Dr. Phil”)
finalized the RBN1801, the high-power professional ribbon transducer with a
length of 18”. With the peak power handling of 3kW and a efficiency of
108dB, the RBN1801 takes over the position as “world’s most powerful
ribbon driver” from the RBN601 (Alcons’ 6” pro-ribbon driver).
This ribbon driver will be the basis for a number of significant “evolutionary
audio solutions” for the installed-, live-, cinema-, and studio sound
market. . The upcoming Q-series will be the first product to be “loaded”
with the RBN1801”.
