DIGITALLY POWERED PMC SURROUND AT METROPOLIS MASTERING

PMC has supplied London’s Metropolis Mastering with seven Flying Mole™ DAD-M100pro digital power amplifiers - the world’s first professional reference class digital power amplification.

The units drive the Arlo mastering suite’s new PMC DB1+ 5.1 surround system. PMC is the sole European distributor of Flying Mole [professional audio products.]

Metropolis Head of Technical Development John Goldstraw was responsible for the decision; “We already use PMC’s throughout the facility, including a Bryston powered PMC IB1S 3-way main monitor system and the DB1+ 5.1 surround system in Arlo. When PMC told us about the Flying Moles, we gave them a go and realised they offered several advantages, including true professional quality sound, very cool running in comparison with all the other options, and we could fit seven of them into a 3U rack. In short, they met all our requirements and they come in at a price that we couldn’t argue with.”

The Arlo suite is predominantly used for analogue disk cutting – including stereo monitoring through the Flying Mole powered DB1+s – and post mastering and final asset preparation representative of the increasing demand for high quality surround audio. The new PMC DB1S-A and TB2S-A active monitors incorporate DAD-M100pro digital power amplifiers and all the design improvements of the PMC DB1S+ and TB2S+ passive models. For more information, please visit http://www.pmc-speakers.com/

About the Flying Mole DAD-M100pro

Developed by the Flying Mole Corporation in Japan, the DAD-M100pro digital power amplifier incorporates several proprietary technological advances and is the world’s first professional reference class digital power amplification. The DAD-M100pro modules weigh just 650 grams and yet deliver 160W into 4 ohms. Newly developed, proprietary micro-circuitry removes the need for separate audio and switch-mode power supply circuits and the resulting power conversion efficiency of 85% allows the units to run far cooler than either conventional analogue or existing digital amplifier designs. At just 30W, maximum continuous power consumption is 1/8 of rated output (160W into 4 ohms); as total power consumption using two units is only 60W, harmonic current standards do not apply.

Measuring only 130 x 210 x 41 mm, the DAD-M100pro’s power size and power weight ratios are unrivalled and effectively bullet-proof construction of the sealed housing ensures high reliability and resistance to harsh operating environments. The ultra compact dimensions and low heat dissipation enable the unit to be used in free standing, rack mounted, wall mounted, or speaker mounted configurations, enabling the highly effective ‘power-packing’ of any number of compact monitor designs, especially useful for free standing surround sound, or console mounted monitor positioning. Variants include Professional (balanced) and Domestic (unbalanced) models, mounting hardware and a 12V DC version.

About the PMC DB1S+ and TB2S+

The 2-way PMC DB1S+ and TB2S+ passive monitors incorporate recent driver and crossover design enhancements. These include the incorporation of the PMC soft dome tweeter featured in the company’s larger LB, AB, IB, MB2 and BB5 designs, lowering of the cross-over point from 3 to 2 kHz for true second order roll off and the inclusion of high grade SOLEN™ capacitors in the cross-over network. These improvements deliver lower distortion and better driver integration and power handling and also provide the DB1S+ and TB2S+ with the same sonic ‘imprint’ as the larger mid –field, full range PMC systems, exhibiting similar high signal definition, consistent on/off axis dispersion, extended frequency response and tonal consistency at all volume levels. As such, these compact monitors do not display the usual performance constraints characteristic of nearfield monitor designs, but provide signal reproduction on a scale comparable with cabinets several times their size.

The DB1S+ and the larger TB2S+ feature PMC’s proprietary 140mm and 170mm high performance LF drivers, respectively. Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) technology and cabinet design, along with high quality, hand built crossover electronics, ensure ultra low distortion and compression characteristics, enabling consistent performance at high SPLs. The unrivalled high-resolution signal performance, tonal accuracy and extended dynamic range characteristic of all PMC monitor designs.
