Producer Dan Workman joined Mathew Knowles and other notable music industry figures in judging the Sanctuary Urban sponsored PROJECT POPSTAR, a search for the next all-girl vocal sensation.
Producer Dan Workman spent much of August participating as a judge and speaker
during Project Popstar; a talent search for Matthew Knowles’ next female
vocal group on Sanctuary Urban.
Knowles, renowned for managing mega-stars Destiny’s Child and daughter
Beyonce Knowles’ remarkable careers, is set on creating another chart-topping
success through this talent search, which was limited to the Houston area. Workman,
who has worked on all of the Destiny’s Child projects as well as solo
projects for Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michele Williams, was tapped to judge
the pre-final and final auditions.
Joining Workman in the panel of judges was Mathew Knowles, R&B singer Keith
Sweat, Sanctuary artist Ray J and three Sanctuary Records associates from across
the globe.
Project Popstar launched on August 14th, 2004 at Houston’s George R.
Brown Convention Center where 400 candidates vied for auditions followed by
two additional rounds of tryouts and screenings. Twenty girls were ultimately
selected and sent off to a rigorous two-week boot camp at Knowles’ Music
World Entertainment compound.
As part of boot camp training, Workman an elected NARAS Governor, co-owner
and president of SugarHill Recording Studios and owner of Dan Workman Music,
also gave the pre-finalists a workshop on "Singing in the Studio".
The workshop provided candidates an insight into studio performance, communicating
with the producer and the engineer, and treating the microphone as an audience.
On Tuesday, August 31st, the 20 girls were given a final chance to showcase
their talent. The finale included group performances followed by a solo performance
from each finalist. The girls were critiqued on their vocal performance, dance
performance, personality and showmanship.
After a lengthy process, twelve girls were selected for further group development
and will go on to compete for the all girl singing group lineup. As a surprising
addition, three girls were chosen for solo development deals to be helmed by
Dan Workman Music.
