Buckinghamshire Chilterns University kicks-off a new degree in Audio & Music Technology.

Buckinghamshire Chilterns University, based in High-Wycombe (around 40 mins from London), has this October 05 launched a brand new BSc in Audio & Music Technology with a dynamic forward looking outlook. The degree is very well resourced both in terms of staff expertise and the all important gear list.

This innovative course, developed in collaboration with industry, has been designed to equip students with the technical and music skills required to take advantage of challenges offered in the working environment of the music and sound industry. It combines the world of music technology and sound development applications.

In Year One students gain a thorough grounding of the technologies used in the music and audio industries along with such themes as the Cultural Music Differences. In Year Two these skills are applied in more depth. Students will study subjects such as Sequencing, Sampling and Recording, Studio Production Processes. Students will also be engaged in specialist musicology and technology and how to apply them.

Year Three is currently structured so that there is a main technical project, and also the opportunity to engage in work-based learning environments with the aim of seeking eventual employment in related fields. There are several themes of study throughout the programme bringing a balance of technology, computing, music and sound together as applied in the industry.

The expansion in the music industry has lead to a diverse range of opportunities for graduates in this field. This programme is aiming high to produce graduates suitable for managing editing suites, assisting in running recording studios, basic studio equipment maintenance, operating mastering suites, broadcast sound and internet based audio environments.

Programme Leader for this course Christopher Hambly states "this course is shaping up to be a 'diamond' in the field of Audio & Music Technology as it tackles the fundamental concepts at the heart of what graduates need in the workplace. Too often audio education can simply miss the mark if not suitably resourced and supported with industrial experience. Added to this we are working in a fast evolving area and audio education must proactively engage in the swift evolving nature of the industry. At BCUC we are in a strong position to be able to develop and sustain relatedness".

Fitting words then for "hitting the mark" and for empowering students with the skills they need. The gear list is impressive too, with two purpose built professional recording studios bubbling over with ProTools equipment all wrapped up with a 5.1 surround mixing environment.

Control|24™, is the latest collaboration between Focusrite® and Digidesign. A control surface engineered by Focusrite and built especially for Pro Tools, Control|24 shatters everything in its price range in terms of quality and performance.
