TC Electronic Releases Stereo to 5.1 Automatic Upmixing for DTV Processors

TC Electronic announces the immediate availability of UpCon™, automatic 5.1 up-conversion audio software for the DB-8 and DB-4 processors.

UpCon™ is based on TC Electronic’s high resolution UnWrap™ algorithm that is considered the standard for such programs in the music, film and post-production market. DB-8 and DB-4 are widely installed processors capable of real-time loudness and format control for multiple optimized transmission feeds, such as HDTV, SDTV, Mobile TV, Internet etc. These processors even include features to automate metadata handling in Dolby AC3 and E based operations, thereby relieving DTV broadcasters of duties with new production time penalties. Further strengthening that aspect, UpCon™ continuously monitors the format of the incoming audio, and if the signal falls back from a true 5.1 to stereo it seamlessly cross-fades into a convincing 5.1 surround up-conversion. UpCon™ may be inserted directly in the main HDTV transmission feed.

One DB-4 or DB-8 processor can simultaneously, and in real time, condition both SD and HD outputs. Regardless of the input format, the first always stays stereo, the latter remains 5.1. UpCon™ detection of the incoming format utilizes new real-time sensing principle, and doesn't need metadata or any external control to function correctly. The latency through this high resolution up-converter is less than 4 milliseconds and the cross-fade into and out of up-conversion occur without muting or interruptions.

UpCon™ may alternatively be used in an OB/remote truck for prestigious sports, music or show productions when stereo and 5.1 feeds are needed. On top of the up-mix, UpCon™ can add further unique 5.1 enhancements to differentiate the HD output from the SD output. One DB-4 or DB-8, together with extra speakers, takes advantage of the truck's stereo production topology and, without further changes, upgrades its capacity to 5.1.

“We are pleased to release this cutting edge technology into our broadcast processors,” said Ken Blecher, TC's director of broadcast sales. “For years UnWrap has had a proven track record in the music and post markets. By adding the automatic features and other enhancements required by broadcasters, UpCon takes this advanced technology into the DTV market. This allows broadcasters to continuously deliver a 5.1 signal whether the originating content is stereo or 5.1.”

TC Electronic, Inc. (TCUS ) distributes TC Electronic, TC-Helicon, Dynaudio Acoustics, and Lab.gruppen products in the US and Canada.
