RealTraps has been busy providing
acoustic treatment and related advice to a number of high-profile
recording and mastering engineers and other industry leaders.
Bob Katz
recently bought seven MondoTraps for his Digital Domain facility in
Orlando, Florida. Bob reports, "The traps have been EXTREMELY
EFFECTIVE! They helped reduce the amplitudes of the nodes and
antinodes, resulting in an overall fuller, stronger, and more accurate
bass. Trapping not only helps notes that may have stood out or been
weak, it also has other benefits. A critical dip at 55 Hz was reduced
with the traps, and this has amazingly improved the overall tonality
of the entire system. Many more MondoTraps will be needed in the next
few months."
Multi-Grammy-nominated engineer/producer Tony Maserati (Beyoncé,
Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, Black Eyed Peas, Kylie Minogue)
and his engineer Mark Roule are also recent customers, using a large
number of MondoTraps, MiniTraps, and SoffitTraps to treat their Una
Volta Studios control room in Canaan, New York. Tony told us, "The
room is so much flatter and true, the peaks and nulls remarkably
smoothed out, mixing there is now sonically accurate and a real
pleasure. RealTraps eliminated the guess work in getting my mix room
acoustically correct. I have always believed that correcting acoustic
problems is the first place any committed music producer should focus
their studio improvement budget. You have put a functional and
affordable lab-tested solution within reach of anyone serious about
music. Thanks!"
Other recent well-known clients include Telefunken USA, Universal
Studios, and Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California.
Telefunken's Alan Veniscofsky said, "The RealTraps package provided by
Ethan Winer and Company has done wonders for our critical testing and
listening environment. They were remarkably easy to install and the
difference was noticeable immediately."
According to RealTraps co-owner Ethan Winer, "It's gratifying to see
folks finally recognize the importance of treating their rooms. I'm
very active in online forums, and every day I see people who are
unhappy with their mixes ask for help. Only a few years ago, the
typical advice was to buy a new high-end mic or pre, or outboard A/D,
or some other 'gear.' But conventional wisdom has shifted, and advice
to improve the room first is now common. Indeed, having bass traps and
other treatment is probably more important than anything else—even
which loudspeakers you use."
RealTraps is owned by Ethan Winer and Doug Ferrara. Ethan is known
throughout the industry for his many technical articles in audio and
computer magazines, and has engineered and produced several classical
music CDs, including a recording of his own cello concerto. Doug is a
professional musician and recording engineer who holds an advanced
degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic and has been a systems engineer for
Intel and Motorola.
