Conexant Introduces Industry's First Modem Chip with Support for Intel's High De

Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor system solutions for digital information and home entertainment networks, today introduced the industry's first dial-up modem chip with support for Intel's High Definition Audio (HD Audio) bus architecture audio standard. The CX11254 is the first in a family of planned products. It uses the HD Audio bus (formerly know by the code name "Azalia") to transmit data between an internal narrowband modem and notebook and desktop computers. It is shipping in sample quantities to customers now.

Our industry-first HD Audio modem chip is a necessary component for PC manufacturers looking to support the robust audio performance required for advanced applications such as streaming video and voice over IP."

HD Audio is an end-to-end audio specification that defines the controller, link and board implementation of audio and modem hardware, both of which are required and operate on the same bus. It enables high-quality, home theater-like sound on multimedia/Media Center PCs.

Conexant has a long history of technological innovation and leadership in modem technology, including development of the world's first dial-up modem chip, and has shipped more than 500 million modems worldwide. The company's highly reliable modem chipsets can be found in desktops, notebooks, handheld devices, video game consoles, set-top boxes, and other platforms such as point-of-sale terminals, providing universal Internet access to millions of users worldwide. Conexant's dial-up modem chipset offering encompasses all major industry standards, including V.22, V.22 bis, V.34, V.44, V.90, and the V.92 dial-up modem specification. Bus architectures supported include the new HD Audio bus, peripheral component interconnect (PCI) bus, universal serial bus (USB), RS-232, and audio/modem chipsets that support AC-Link.

The CX11254 supports V.92/V.90 analog receive data up to 56 kilobits per second (kbps) with V.44 data compression, V.17 analog fax to 14.4 kbps, voice/telephone answering machine, and is compliant with Azalia specification.

Pricing and Availability

The CX11254 is sampling now, with volume production scheduled for the second quarter of 2004. It is packaged in a 16-pin thin shrink small outline package (TSSOP) and priced at $4.00 in quantities of 10,000.
