Philharmonia Baroque - Beethoven: Opferlied and Symphony Number 9

Beethoven

It's here! We think you'll agree that PBO's recording of Beethoven's 9th was well worth the wait. Not only does the entire performance crackle with dramatic intensity and power, but the sound quality is absolutely superlative, with rich instrumentation and a crystal clear recording. And for the final movement--Beethoven's timeless and thrilling "Ode to Joy"--three different choral groups come together in one fiercely profound powerhouse of sound. "This may be the ideal 9th for a new generation' says Time Out New York.

Philharmonia Baroque with Patti Lupone --Jake Heggie: To Hell and Back http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/pb-heggie Celebrated "Dead Man Walking" composer Jake Heggie has a fascinating take on the Persephone myth, and in this world premiere recording of "To Hell And Back," a strikingly modern sounding Philharmonia Baroque brings it to life along with Broadway superstar Patti Lupone and soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian. Traversing an impressive amount of musical territory in just five scenes, Heggie uses his stylistic choices to develop a uniquely artful and affecting portrait of spousal abuse and the familial denial that perpetuates it. "Vibrant. Bold. Magnificent." says the Oakland Tribune.

Brad Sucks: Mixter Two - I Dont Know What Im Doing

Best-selling Brad Sucks has always been exceptionally down with the whole "derivative works" thing, so we were excited when we heard he was assembling two albums' worth of his favorite remixes of his own music by more than a dozen different artists. Veteran remixers Deutscheunschuld and Sharp make great contributions here, as do more than a dozen of the other mad scientists over at ccMixter. We especially like Blackberry's futuristically gritty treatment of "Dirtbag" (CD1) and Teru's languid, Indian summer take on "I Think I Started a Trend" (CD2).

John Holowach : Elements

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/holowach-elements
John Holowach leads us into his assemblage of cleanly elegant downtempo electronic music with some spare, astringent strings, then opens things up significantly with trip-hop influences, haunting echoes of classical, and a wonderfully airy, spacious feeling overall. Elements is a fairly chilled out album, but also a subtly crisp and energizing one--a great choice to play at work.

Trio Dafne: Airs De Cour Francais Du XVIIe Siecle

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/triodafne-airs
With coherence of style and great creativity in ornamentation, the three women of the Trio Dafne perform the airs de cour of the 17th century with all-original instrumentation, and the result is delicately beautiful album of French chanson, with the intimate feeling of a parlor room recital.

Ambient Teknology : The Devils Toxin - Atek Rebirth Vol 1

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/atek-devil
Making its Internet debut, The Devil's Toxin is the creation of U.K. based artists Mark P and Dave M., and it's a darkly driving, mysterious album of exceptional underground dance music with heavy trance influences. Standout tracks include the malevolently groovy "But Satan Rules The Universe" and the intoxicating downtempo number, "Atek 1st Movement."

American Bach Soloists : Cantatas Vols. 2, 3, and 4

http://magnatune.com/artists/abs
ABS fans will be happy to hear that we've released volumes two, three, and four of their glorious cantatas--featuring the masterful performances and "spun-gold phrasing" of these early music virtuosos.

Zucker Andon Ranck and Locker : The J.S. Bach Trio Sonatas

http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/zuckertrio-bach
Flute virtuoso and longtime Magnatune artist Laurel Zucker leads a charming and accomplished ensemble comprised of fellow flautist Sara Andon, harpsichordist Gerald Ranck, and one of the best and busiest cellists in New York City--Richard Locker. Their performances here are precise, energetic, and inventive.
