EL SEGUNDO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 2009: Paul Martin's American Bistro (PMAB) prides itself on sourcing its food from local, organic vendors who use sustainable and humane methods of husbandry. Its moderately-priced fare is derived, not from special recipes but, from the authenticity of its ingredients.
The success of the first PMAB near Sacramento, California inspired the creation of a second establishment in El Segundo, near Los
Angeles.
In the new space, the owners wanted an unobtrusive sound system that felt
like a natural extension of the restaurant's casual décor and genuine
philosophy. Mark Mowry, president of Creative Media Solutions, Inc.,
Rocklin, California, accomplished these requests by designing and installing
a system centered on the Symetrix Zone Mix 760. "They were looking for full
fidelity sound and flawless coverage that is easily controlled and
maintenance-free," said Mowry.
Mowry separated the new restaurant into four zones: the dining room, the
lounge, the patio, and a private dining room. The first three zones share an
input source - Music Box, XM audio, XM video, or a computer output for
flexible audio and video content. The private dining room can also share any
of these inputs or a local computer output for presentations.
Those input sources feed a Symetrix Zone Mix 760 that performs all of the
zone logic, input processing, and speaker processing. "The single rack space
Zone Mix 760 packs a ton of processing power that's easy to control and
configure for surprisingly little money," enthused Mowry. "It's the perfect
processor for this kind of job." In addition to standard EQs and filters,
Mowry used the 760's autogain capacity to match levels between the heavily
compressed Music Box source and the other inputs. QSC amplifiers drive
twenty SoundTube RS400i full-range loudspeakers and six TOA FE-100
subwoofers that distribute sound throughout the restaurant's fifteen-foot
ceiling.
From the user's standpoint, the system is very simple to operate. "They turn
it off and on from one button and that's about it," laughed Mowry. A
Symetrix ARC-SWK wall panel provides source selection for all four zones and
volume control for two zones. In addition, users can make quick volume
adjustments in the dining room and adjacent lounge using a Symetrix ARC-K1
wall panel.
"Part of the beauty of this system is that the users can only touch those
aspects that it makes sense for them to touch," said Mowry. "In the past,
system tuning was frequently wrecked by busboys who just finished installing
car stereos and thought they were experts! Here, there's nothing they can
do, nothing they can ruin!"
