Vancouver Film School Instructor Uses Pro Tools to Create Audio Game Design Prog

— Vancouver, BC – The Vancouver Film School (www.vfs.com) announces the launch of its first game streaming for audio design. Housed in the Sound Design department, the program was created by instructor Leonard Paul, a veteran game designer and musician, who used Digidesign's Pro Tools to construct the curriculum for the courses.

"The science and art of video game theory is very young," Paul explains. "Gaming is a totally different beast than a linear medium like film. Because each game is itself a piece of software, you have to be able to communicate the content you're creating to the programmers."

"To arrive at content in the first place requires the best tools available, and that's Digidesign. As the primary tool for generating content, Pro Tools is terrific for students who want to learn composition. It’s the industry standard, and it’s a solid, powerful, well-designed piece of software."

Paul started in the video game industry over ten years ago, at a time when the existing digital editing rigs were still relatively rudimentary. During this period he devised ways, using Pro Tools, to assemble a system for producing interactive game content. Before coming to VFS, Paul designed games for numerous developers including Electronic Arts and Radical, and composed scores for films like the Sundance 2004 winning documentary The Corporation.

"There are no textbooks for this stuff, so I created my own system that simulates the experience of working on a video game," Paul says. "The main difference between linear and adaptive design is that you have to tune it to real time. In effect you have to tear down the old system and build an entirely new one for every game. There is no better software for doing this than Pro Tools."

The Vancouver Film School offers full-time and part-time production programs in Sound Design for Visual Media, as well as Film, 3D and 2D animation, Make-Up Design, Writing, Interactive Media, and Foundation Visual Arts & Design. It is the only school in Canada where students receiver Operator-level Pro Tools certification. VFS faculty work closely with industry experts to ensure curriculum keeps pace with technological changes affecting the industry.
