DTS LAUNCHES NEW SUITE OF ENCODING PRODUCTS FOR FACILITY AND DESKTOP APPLICATION

This content is brought to you by Audiocourses dot com

Twyford, UK / 4 June 2004: At the recent AES Europe convention, DTS demonstrated a suite of three new software encoders. Two stand-alone encoders, for use with Mac OS™ and Windows™ based workstations, and the company’s first server based encoder, provide a range of workflow solutions. The encoders enable the creation of DTS soundtracks for DVD-Video, DVD-Audio and 5.1 CDs.

Two of the encoders offer the first commercially available solutions for encoding unique DTS 96/24 and DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete technologies for DVD.

Two versions of the stand-alone Mac/PC encoder are available. One offers DTS Digital Surround® 5.1 encoding – at 768kbps or 1.5Mbs bit rates – with 48 or 44.1kHz sample rates, for DVD and DTS format CDs, respectively. The other additionally enables unique, advanced DTS encoding options of 5.1 channel, DTS 96/24 Digital Surround and fully discrete, 6.1 channel DTS-ES Digital Surround. Both Mac and PC operating modes feature an identical, highly intuitive user interface that allows the set up of all encoding parameters on a single page. Each accepts both WAV and AIFF file formats. Confidence checks at all points of the encoding process ensures proper encoding of the bitstream and sample accuracy.

The DTS X Encode package is a facility based encoder designed for the OS X Server environment and providing fully featured encoding for the complete set of DTS Digital Surround technologies, for multiple workstation applications. The X Encode will allow up to 99 users on both Mac and Windows workstations to address the encoder. The data is packed by a specially-developed utility to ensure error-free encodes and provide optional encryption for the secure delivery of client content assets between facilities. The administrator can assign priority to the encodes, and can encode at 768kbps or 1.5Mbs bit rates and 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96kHz sample rates, as well as for 6.1 DTS-ES Discrete.

“Over the past several years, we’ve seen an increased interest – in the industry and among consumers – in incorporating superior DTS soundtracks on more content, both music and film, on DVD,” says Brian Towne, Vice President Consumer / Pro Audio Division at DTS. “We are introducing this suite of encoders to meet the pro-audio community’s technical needs and therefore to grow the amount of DTS content available.”

These new software encoders complement other software DTS encoding options via Nuendo version 2.0, Minnetonka Audio SurCode for PC, and Universal Audio’s Pro Tools DTS encoder plug-in for DigiDesign. DTS also markets the DTS CAE-5 hardware encoder for high volume requirements.
