MIAMI, Sept. 16. On September 28, 2004, Florida Memorial College will become a hotspot for jazz with the launching of its "Sweet Tuesday Jazz Sessions." This innovative program will be held on the Florida Memorial College Campus
in the auditorium of the FMC/FIU Joint Use Building from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. In February of each year, Florida Memorial presents the Melton Mustafa Jazz Weekend, and the Sweet Tuesday Jazz Session is another avenue by which to sustain this art form.
It is a unique alternative and an excellent avenue where South Florida's aspiring
young jazz musicians can engage in weekly, organized jam sessions open to all
high school and college jazz ensembles in South Florida. Jazz enthusiasts will
now have the opportunity to savor sweet jazz by South Florida's own young musicians
on a regular basis. The jazz session will not only benefit Florida Memorial
College students, but they will also provide a student networking system in
the South Florida area.
The jazz sessions will definitely provide the opportunity for non-student musicians
and the general public to appreciate and enjoy jazz music and its fundamentals.
The presence of jazz legend Melton Mustafa and renowned jazz violinist Nicole
Yarling on the college's music staff is a predictor of the caliber of musicians
and the quality of the jazz sessions that the audience will encounter.
Led by the students, the sessions will celebrate youth, enthusiasm, talent,
and love for the art form. World-renowned jazz steel pannist Leon "Foster"
Thomas, a senior at FMC, and his band will host a one-hour session each month.
The one-hour opening session will be followed by an organized jam session and
the evening will end with a short set of music.
At the end of the school year, original compositions of various ensembles will
be featured on the first release of a Florida Memorial College student-run record
label. All South Florida jazz enthusiasts are invited to the Sweet Tuesday Jazz
Sessions. There is a $2.00 admission fee for non-Florida Memorial College students
with proceeds earmarked for music scholarships.
Florida Memorial College is located at 15800 NW 42 Avenue, Miami. For
additional information about this unique musical program, please call the FMC
Music Department at (305) 626-3685.
