White Papoo Liquid Breaks Volume 1 – Review by Lenny Dee

“Back in the mid 80’s when I started out, I worked on a lot of tracks with breaks, I had to search high and low for breaks from records that added that certain feel to those early New York Techno & House productions. To this day my productions still contain breaks, but its tuff to find fresh new breaks that add life to a track.

With the White Papoo Liquid Breaks Volume 1, it put the old and new days of searching for cool breaks to an end. This sample pack is really jam-packed with kicking breaks & banging drum hits, all in easy to get at folders, so there was no messing about!

When I demoed the pack, the beats sounded so dope I had to drop them into my production that I was working on that day. The breaks I used really took the production up a notch. They were well cut, totally user friendly, and they just sounded great! The pack had so many great bits to use, it was tuff to choose what I wanted to mangle first. If I had to sum this pack up in two words, it would be “Must Have”.

Lenny Dee is recognized as one of the world’s earliest House, Breakbeat and Hardcore pioneers. He is also well-known for his partnership with Techno legend, Frankie Bones. The pair stormed onto the UK dance scene, with “Looney Tunes” in 1989 and their style of breaks still influences dance music today.

Dan Auerbach chooses the API 1608 console for his project studio

AKRON, OHIO – MAY 2008: Born of a minimalist aesthetic that values quality and a strong sonic personality over gadgetry, Akron Analog is the newly-built project studio of The Black Keys front-man, Dan Auerbach.

Inspired to follow in the old-school, small-room, acoustically-correct tradition pioneered by Sun Records and their ilk, Auerbach hired renowned engineer/producer-cum-acoustician Mark Neil, who famously designed London’s Toe Rag Studios (The White Stripes). Auerbach has populated his impeccable new studio with a collection of the choicest gear, including a brand new API 1608 fully-discrete analog console.

“I’m trying to go back to a time when people actually used the preamps on the console,” laughed Auerbach. “The studio is really stripped down compared to a typical modern studio, but all of the essentials are covered by the very best analog gear in the world – Neumann mics, Pultec analog processors, Studer tape machines, that sort of thing. I needed a fully functional console that would fit into a small space and deliver a beautiful analog sound.”

Having originally helped define the sound that Auerbach was now trying to recreate, API was a natural choice. When he heard about the small footprint but expansive feature set of the all-new API 1608, he knew it was the perfect fit both physically and sonically. The API 1608 incorporates the company’s discrete electronics topology and is built to the same exacting standards as the flagship Vision and Legacy Series consoles. The standard 1608, with sixteen input channels, eight buses, eight aux sends, eight reverb returns and full center section facilities, includes a dozen 550A three-band equalizers and four 560 ten-band graphic EQ modules with space available for eight additional 500 Series modules.

Auerbach fell in love with the new console on breaks from his demanding touring schedule and has worked with it every day since the tour’s end. Apart from his own music, he’s excited to start recording the bands that he loves at Akron Analog (on an invitation-only basis!).

The API 1608 incorporates the company’s discrete electronics topology and is built to the same exacting standards as the flagship Vision and Legacy Series consoles, the standard model having sixteen input channels, eight buses, eight aux sends, eight reverb returns and full center section facilities. The standard mainframe also includes twelve 550A three-band equalizers and four 560 ten-band graphic EQ modules with space available for eight additional 500 Series modules. The support of 500 Series modules was another point in the 1608’s favor. “You’ll probably see Telefunken USA develop some 500 Series units over the next 18 months or so,” Veniscofsky confides.

Automated Processes, Inc. remains the leader in analog recording gear, with the Vision surround production and Legacy Series recording consoles, the SM Series rack-mounted mixers, and the classic line of modular signal processing equipment.

GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA – JUNE 2008: At InfoComm 2008, Danley Sound Labs is introducing the SH-46 Synergy Horn, a 40 x 60-degree dispersion pattern speaker offering very high-output capability with ultra high-fidelity.

This latest addition to the company’s Synergy Horn product line is designed to be operated vertically or horizontally and may be configured standalone or in an array.

The SH-46 handles 1,400 watts RMS of power and has a sensitivity of 106dB. Frequency response is 70Hz – 16kHz (+/-4dB, using two or more cabinets). The braced Baltic birch enclosure measures 29 inches high by 22.5 inches wide and 22.75 inches deep and weighs 105 pounds.

“The SH-46 provides more vertical coverage and higher output than the SH-50. It doesn’t go as low or as high as the SH-50 but for many applications the SH-46 will be a welcomed addition to the Danley Synergy Horn line,” noted Mike Hedden, president of Danley Sound Labs. “To hear the latest loudspeakers innovations from Tom Danley, visit our booth and demo room at InfoComm. We’ll remind you why you got into audio in the first place. It’s about the sound!”

Tom Danley is one of the most innovative loudspeaker designers in the industry today and is recognized worldwide as a pioneer for “outside the box” thinking in professional audio technology. His legendary designs have been utilized in projects ranging from ground zero bombing simulation, jet engine active noise cancellation, and sonic boom generators to critical listening mastering studios, high-end home theatre, and houses of worship around the world.
