Very late reply here but il post it anyway.... you should never let your levels clip in the digital domain. once you clip your sound it is irreparable distortion (not of the goood type). unlike tape which can be driven past its headroom and sound great, you must always try keep your levels under the clipping point. the usual rule is to have about 10dB headroom. pops can be combated with a pop filter and if your recording is too sibilant try a metal filter like the studio-projects ones. happy recording. peace!
