Rationale

This unit allows the candidate to become familiar with sound engineering concepts, equipment, systems and operational methods in a simulated professional environment.

Outcomes

• Specify, set up, operate and de-rig equipment for amplification and recording

• Set up and operate communications systems

• Carry out simple audio wiring

• Specify and order equipment and consumable items

Practical activities

• Operate a simple mixing console for public address and recording

• Make and edit recordings of speech

• Copy and compile recordings for broadcast, theatrical presentation or mastering

• Create, by copying and editing, a sound effect sequence that tells a story

• Wire an audio cable

• Use test equipment to measure the frequency response of a piece of audio equipment

• Set up and operate a communication system

• Make out an order for equipment and consumable items
