guitar mixing  Reply with quote

hi again!

From the time I went to rec. studio i 've got a bunch of problems. It's obvious that this is the first time that all the studio work is done by me...

How to mix a heavy guitar? One left and the other on the right side with different tone? or alltogether with one guitar in the middle?

HI,

I moved your post to a more relevant place..

Now the thing here is that it is entirely up to you... where do you want to hear the guitars?

The best advice I could give for you is to do some research and listen to as many related bands and mixes as possible, and then formulate your own opinion on where you would like YOUR guitars mixed.

Jot down on some paper what you hear and where you hear it, it's a good learning tool.

I often use the phrase "its a good job there are menus in restuarants, as we would all choose something different"

You know?

If you are after a particular technique, then re-post with that idea, as there could potentially be thousands of combinations.

Rule #1 - There are no rules.

You can put the guitar any damn place you feel like it. Bands often ask me when mixing "Can we pay the vocal here?". My response is always "we can do whatever we want" (within reason).

Do whatever the hell the song calls for.

Here's my philosophy on guitar recordin after years of running a booked studio.

There are many good points here already. I just wanted to add that I always ask the band what configuration they set up in;;; when they play live. And I try to present the same audio image on recording. If the guitars are on hard left and hard right , I try to make the recording Hard left and hard right. If the singer plays acoustic and sits in the center of the stage , I'll pan that guitar to center..
But as the people above me here have said, There are no rules. And it's up to you.
