General Question: Vocal Mic/Channel EQ  Reply with quote

I was wondering if there might be a general guide or rule of thumb that would be helpful in using the parametric EQs on the individual channels of a mixing console where vocal mics are concerned.

I know that each mic will have different characteristics, but there must be some general rule of thumb.

My console has HI (12kHz), sweepable MID (8kHz-100Hz), and LO (80Hz), and a "lo-cut" switch (75Hz) which I tend to use on vocals. I usually keep the HI flat at 0, and the LO at -6.

My big question is how best to use the sweepable MID where vocals are concerned. Ditch "lo-mids"? Ditch "hi-mids"? Boost either? Am I totally wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help, info, URLs, or beatings that may be administered as a result of this post.[/b]

There's no one answer for this question; it's going to be different for every vocalist. But I can tell you that there are generally two main areas that end up needing cuts - depending on the vocalist, it's often either around 200 - 350 Hz, or about 4 kHz. Usually if there isn't a problem in either of these areas, I don't even need to touch the mid EQ. But like I said, it's different every time.

Use your ears. Wink
