| Week 3 - Rt Music 2 Listening Activity |
|
|
This week is really exciting in that we agree to get
really busy
examining the tune Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) by Pink Floyd.
Now as you may have gathered in the
Live Workshop
I have zero concern for your taste here, (I think I can speak for ben also). You like The Floyd or you do not, that is of absolute no concern for this practical.
What is of complete concern is your ability to listen without colouration and be able to converse about the recording.
The forum is now open for dialogue, and I am looking for you all to indulge yourselves and speak frankly about what you hear, what are you ears telling you?

Hints:
Begin by listening to only one instrument all the way through the track, perhaps the bass, and commenting only on that. I am not looking for a track review here, but your ability to be able to put what you hear into words.

Good luck, I will be checking and replying if necessary, every day this week.
P.S. If you need the track because you do not have it in your collection (
shame on you
) you can grab an educational mp3 here:

Hi there
I've actually been listening quite a lot. I'm not quite sure though what do you want us to listen after.
I'm aware of that it is not a review you are asking for. Is it a description of the sound or the different tracks?

We are looking for an analysis of the track and its production.
For example, how does the bass guitar seem to have been recorded, or how were the drums miced up?
What effects are on the vocals, were the kids recorded inside or outside.
Describe the tone of the guitar...
Get the idea? _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

All right, I’ll give it a first shut. Even thought I’ve heard this music millions of times I never listened to it as sound. It is quite a different discipline. I actually don’t hear the music, when I’m listening to the sound.
Anyway.
The whole track sounds to contain several layers. In the bottom layer are the drums and the bass. They are not very prominent, sound quite dry, rather natural, without manipulation, compare to the vocals, synths and lead guitar. I can hear the kick drum, the snare drum and the hi-hat of the drum kit. How they are miked up would be a guess according to what I know you usually do, rather then anything I can hear, because I don’t know how one way of miking sounds, compare to another. The same with the bass. I assume I will know better in a couple of month.
In the next layer are the rhythm guitars. I think I can hear two. They have the same quality of sound as the drums and the bass and there must be a distance in between them as you can hear the stereo effect.
In the third layer are the vocals. There must be added some reverb there, both to the choir and the solo voices. In the same layer are the synths and the lead guitar with a fair amount of reverb added.
In the very outer layer are the kids at the end. They sound to be outside the headphones when I listen to them. They could be recorded outside. There is a buzzing and humming noise around them, which could be remote traffic.
With different layers I don’t mean different tracks, but the whole track sounds four-dimensional for me.
That’s my first try. I might come up with more as I continue listening or as I’m getting feedback. I’d love to have something to compare to. For many things I’m lacking points of reference.
