Tape Stop Effects Help Reply with quote

I am trying to add an effect to a song that will stop it suddenly to give the impression of stoping a record on a turntable by hand by hand and then letting go so it starts up again. i.e a very quick slow down followed by a short gap followed by a very quick start up.

Is there a plug in effect that could do this or any other means? Anyone got any suggestions?

Hope what I have described above makes sense!!!!

Cheers

Digidesign Vari-Fi, Serato Pitch 'n Time Reply with quote

Ok in the olden golden days this was created by grabbing the disc and physically stopping it.

To re-ceate this you need to consider what is actually happening to the sound.

Essentially all that is happening is that the pitch of the entire audio is dropping at a very rapid rate, so low in fact it extends beyond our ears. Turning the tape machine on again results in extremely low bass again and rapidly raising up to pitch.

SO the effect is pitch changing over time..

I know Digi Design have the:
Digidesign Vari-Fi, Serato Pitch 'n Time combination for ProTools.

There is also a VST plugin called TapeStop for windows around.

However you can create it in cubase by using the pitch shift curve tool, with time compensation unchecked.

Here is one I did real quick just to show you, see how I made it scratch a little also?

With some tweaking and editing you can get it as you need it.

Let us know how you go on.

Thanks for the advice - I will try it out.

Liked the clip of Stuff Like THat - brings backs memories of the course earlier this year - never thought I would have to listen to it again though.

Did you do that in cubase? I use Sonar but assume the principal will be the same.

Thanks again

Cubase Reply with quote

Hehe thought you may like that.

Yes that was done in cubase, took about 3 mins.

And yes it's just about applying the concept to your software.

I will give it a go in Sonar. Have just tried to download Tape Stop but none of the links I have found seem to be working at the moment.

That's interesting Chris,
I had to do this for the end of a track, I called it a "motor off" you know, like in the old days when you are playing a disc and you switch off the deck motor and let the whole thing just grind down. I achieved this by burning the end of the track to CD, then I played the CD on my Stanton S-700 Dj CD machine which has this effect built in. I recorded the result back into the project and cross-faded it sharply into play at the end of the track. Worked a treat.
However your way is a lot easier and gives you more control over the effect too. I was very supprised how smoothly your sample slowed up, no cliches or anything nasty at all. I am definitely going to try this out soon. Another AudioCourses cool tip Cool

Thanks for that one,
Jules.

Good luck with that one Hoggs Wink

Cheers julesf.

A good example of learn the concept rather than the software this one.

Which you did anyway with your CD trick..
