Couple of questions to flesh it out a bit :-

i) What speed processor has your laptop got
ii) Which Cakewalk software are you using
iii) Internal or external soundcard
iv) Are you running effects at playback

Bios Update  Reply with quote

I've heard of this before which a BIOS update fixed easily. Might be something to think of.

I've moved this to the Healthy PCs Work Better forum also, as it is not an audio software issue but a computer issue. (I think)

Couple of options could be (I have a feeling it might be No 1 but just incase!) :

i) Have a look at the audio options for Sonar (don't ask where I'm at work and Sonar is at home!!) On one of the menus (Options>Audio I think) is a tab called Driver Profiles - make sure this is set to the U-122 card as I have had this problem with a PC with a soundblaster and a MAudio card installed. Play on the wrong one and playback stutters.

ii) Drivers for external audio card

If the USB audio is a new install and the problem only surfaced after it was installed could be a driver problem. If so, look on the manufactures site and download the latest drivers. Clear out all the old ones through the Control Panel then re-install using the new drivers.

If your using Win98 then that might be a problem also (I had huge problems getting my laptop to even talk to a usb audio card...let alone playback! Got bored and put WinXP on...ta da! All fixed?!)

iii) DXSound problems

"Scratchiness" can sometimes be down to a fault in Windows DXSound. On the Start Menu - select the Run option and type dxdiag then let it run. Keep clicking next to see if there are any problems (shown on the bottom pane). It might be worth updating DirectX just to be on the safe side.

iv) Effects

Have you tried running the mix without effects? Does this help? If so then one of your effects is taking up too much processor time.

Phew! Hope this helps

I would either find a set of effects that consume less processor power (e.g. I use the standard Cakewalk reverb on my laptop - but the Waves version on my PC (now that's a resource hog!)) or (this is the long way 'round) do things one track at a time (** WARNING - Backup often! **)

If you right-click on a track number in Sonar 3 you can see an option to Archive a track. This effectively switches the track off consuming less resources. Turn off all tracks except the one you want to work with and add your compression effect. (if it runs without stuttering) Get the settings that you're happy with and select Process > Apply audio effects. This will apply the effect directly to the audio file (leaving you with a new .wav file). Hey presto Compression on a track with no system overhead.

Do you use reverb per-track or as a send effect? If you're using it per-track that can be a killer as reverbs are generally the most processor-intensive effect.
