Would you say it is necessary to have a full-length studio mastered CD BEFORE you try to promote your music on the internet? Or can you run with your demos for a while? |

Seems to me we should start to ask the question "through which channels does internet music promotion work".
Maybe if we approach it from that angle we can start to understand better what we need to do, I mean a full mastered CD might not be important.
How is music listened to over the internet?
Let's start there..

Surprizingly enough, You can sell your music on line one song at a time. being this the case you really don't need a full CD to start. Selling one song gives you the ability to market test your music. But its inportant to point out that marketing music on the internet involves a lot of dedication and patience. To give you an idea of what is out there to assist you in selling CDs via internet, go to MEDIAPAL.COM. These guys have an offer like MP3.COM had. You can selll one song or a complete CD and accept credit card. This is great if you don't have the $$$$ to spend on a merchant account. You want to use all your resorces wisely. So before Getting a merchant account, Shopping cart program to sell your CD, Website and webpage, which will cost you an arm and maybe a few fingers, you could test the acceptance of your music with virtually little cash. This is just the physical selling of your music marketing is a whole different world. |

People look for the music AFTER they heard OF it and not BECAUSE they heard it (at your site eventually).
And if they can avoid paying for it, even if just .99 cents, they will avoid paying for it. They have no quest for quality, usually... and ripping a 32k stereo wma maybe enough...
Unless the musician suplies somekind of added value (artwork, words, patches, etc.) or offline material (physical CDs), it's still very hard to get rich on you stuff only unless you do like iTunes or Napster and sell the already "offline" established mainstream songs... and they sell many, not one artist.
The real find would be... and the question... How do you make someone go to your site, listen to your music and then buy it without ever having heard of you elsewhere BUT your site?
Now I guess this is where the Marketing we are trying to get to here gets in... it's not having the music, or even the mastered music, is getting people there wanting it (preferably mastered), and a lot of it...
Dont forget gigs and thus on... it's music right?

If we can understand how we need to market our tunes online, then we will be able to better understand what formats we should offer and of what quality.
I agree with AMR when he states:

This is true and can be backed up with solid evidence.
So then should we now start to focus on creating that all important "brand" concept? For marketing our music?

If anyone thinks your going to sell 1000 CDs on the Internet, well you have another thing coming. Statistics still show that 80% or even more are sold the good old fashion way, at a store. Yes the Internet does facilitate the distribution and sales, but it is not the goose that lays the golden eggs. In order for the Internet to work as a sales and marketing tool for you, it must be used with traditional methods. If you don’t you become the needle in the hay stack and nobody will know that you exist.
Contacting web sites that tailor to your genre is a must so you can negotiate a link on their page. Placing samples of your music on the following sites is also necessary:

Yes, your music can be pirated when in the internet by countless means but you must be a little wise assume everyone is out to get your music. Face it, technology provides the pirate to take your property no matter what the media is. When you stream audio or grant an mp3 audio of your recording for download, you don’t have to put the complete song for download. Create a 20-30 second segment of your production and use that to entice listeners. If you place your complete music on the Net, believe me it will get distributed without your consent. Now piracy can also work to your advantage. If someone is will to pirate your music, It must be good in order for someone to go through all that trouble. So guess what, you can use this to get your music out to the masses. You select the music you want the pirates to share.
How this sheds some light on the matter. The bottom line is that you need to dedicate long hours to be successful in this still relatively net media in marketing. |
