<`Rico> hehe
<knightwolf> no tecknicians here but me
<knightwolf> new game for me
<`Rico> well it will help explain the concepts, i found that i used do things without knowing what it actually is
<`Rico> like compression for instance
<seanm> do what?
<seanm> more mocks?
<`Rico> i always used to chuck compressors onto everything not knowing what it was actually doing
<knightwolf> what the    isit
<seanm> no i went thru past papers and my task answers looking for holes in my understanding
<seanm> found loads!
<seanm> filling them in slowly i hope
<`Rico> this is a weird conversation lol

<knightwolf> did everybody leave?
<Audiocourses> no
<`Rico> lol
<knightwolf> i have reason

<Audiocourses> no
<knightwolf> gezzzzzzzzzzz lol
<Audiocourses> and I have no idea what hmm is
<knightwolf> when you hum like mmmmmm
<knightwolf> llol
<knightwolf> alright just cut me out lol
<`Rico> the basic tracks make up the basic framework of a song, they are recorded first to give a reference for voice parts and rythm track. they are usually drums, bass, guitar
<Audiocourses> kightwolf..... we take zero prisoners.. :)
<knightwolf> :(
<Audiocourses> Rico you are gettign a ton of stars tonight
<`Rico> hehe only coz sean is delayed;)
<knightwolf> yep rico got em all lol
<Audiocourses> next
<Audiocourses> ready?
<knightwolf> i was runnin close thou
<`Rico> yup
<knightwolf> yes
<Audiocourses> takes some explaining this one
<Audiocourses> In a popular music recording session of a conventional rock band, what is foldback?
<knightwolf> the sound that bounces off the wall and comes back into the mic?
<knightwolf> did i get a beep? lol
<Audiocourses> knightwolf.. no
<knightwolf> ok your go rico gezzzzzzz
<`Rico> foldback enables a musician to hear themselves play, during a performance
<`Rico> lol
<Audiocourses> lol
<knightwolf> thought that was headphones lol
<Audiocourses> knightwolf, don;t feel bad, these guys ahve studied for over 10 weeks or more :))
<knightwolf> ok thanks
<Audiocourses> here is the model answer:
<Audiocourses> The musicians wear headphones through which they can hear themselves and each other clearly. In the basic tracks stage, it is necessary because the musicians may be separated by acoustic screens.  In the overdubbing stage, it is necessary for a vocalist, for example, to be able to hear himself/herself against the previously recorded tracks.
<knightwolf> i got em all wrong
<Audiocourses> knightwolf then you are in a good place to learn :))
<`Rico> well this is the first week that i've answered any;)
<knightwolf> clappin ur doing good rico
<`Rico> hehe
<knightwolf> do you have another question?
* mudbone has joined #audiocourses
<Audiocourses> heh I got about 6000 questions
<Audiocourses> mudbone who are you?
* seanm has quit IRC (*.net *.split)
<mudbone> a wonderer
<Audiocourses> he may learn something
<mudbone> sry
<Audiocourses> shall we go on?
* mudbone has left #audiocourses
<Audiocourses> lol
<ben-m> sean has split
<knightwolf> ya
<`Rico> he must of had very bad delay
<knightwolf> yep somethin happend
<`Rico> was replying to things 10 minutes before
<Audiocourses> hmm
<knightwolf> lol
<knightwolf> lol
<knightwolf> <<<hand on da buzzer
<Audiocourses> ohhh ready huh?
<Audiocourses> try this
<Audiocourses> In live recording where there is a separate PA mixing console and recording console, how do the two consoles receive signals from the microphones?
<knightwolf> thats a really good question and i wana copy that answer lol
<`Rico> this ones yours knightwolf;)
<Audiocourses> lol
<knightwolf> plug into console and send it from the outputs of the recorder
<knightwolf> i know thats wrong
<knightwolf> cuz it dont work here lol
<Audiocourses> kinightwolf,, not entirely wrong :)
<knightwolf> laffin oh no thats good news
<Audiocourses> yes it is.. :)
<Audiocourses> it;s better than wrong
<knightwolf> lmao
<knightwolf> <<<waits for the right answer
<Audiocourses> you waiting for the right answer?
<Audiocourses> rico?
<knightwolf> u guys are kool lol
<`Rico> yeah i can't remember this one
<Audiocourses> here it is:
<Audiocourses> Microphone splitters are used.  The output of each microphone goes to a splitter which contains a transformer with two secondary windings providing independent signals for the two consoles.
<knightwolf> wow
<ben-m> There are other alternatives too
<Audiocourses> :)
<ben-m> you could for instance feed the recording desk from pre fade direct outputs
<ben-m> on the live desk
<ben-m> into line inputs on the recording desk/recorder
<knightwolf> yes
* seanm has joined #audiocourses
<seanm> hello
<`Rico> hi sean
<seanm> hi rico
<seanm> just checking
<`Rico> cool the delay gone then
<seanm> seems to
<`Rico> i've got loads of gold stars coz u aint here:)
<Audiocourses> lol
<knightwolf> what else
<seanm> i don';t think i could see all your messages
<seanm> hehe
<seanm> is it happening again
<`Rico> seems ok
<seanm> are you chatting
<seanm> getting paranoid now
<`Rico> lol
<Audiocourses> sean you are fine.
<seanm> that i can't see your messages
<seanm> your all tyalking about e
<seanm> me
<Audiocourses> all good..
<ben-m> god that seans a right...
<`Rico> of course
<seanm> lo
<ben-m> ;)
<seanm> lol
<Audiocourses> Ben have you some questions?
<ben-m> yes
<ben-m> Explain the basic differences between General MIDI and ordinary MIDI.
<knightwolf> i cant figure out midi at all lol
<knightwolf> hey can i ask a question what was the other choices on the last question
<seanm> general midi contians 128 assignable instruments in groups a general midi file will play back with the same instruments on any compatible device
<ben-m> good sean
<seanm> ordinary midi has no assigned instruments
<ben-m> good
<ben-m> so off the top of your head
<ben-m> how would you get a drum sound from GM?
<`Rico> thats a good short way of saying it, i nearly wrote an essay
<seanm> channel 10
<knightwolf> watch out rico sean is >>back lol
<ben-m> bootiful bernard
<`Rico> hehe
<seanm> lol
<seanm> chris are you knightwolf?
<Audiocourses> cough
* Audiocourses go grabs a beer
<knightwolf> no
<seanm> hehe
<ben-m> do you want to see the model answer for that one?
<knightwolf> lol bring us all one
<seanm> please
<`Rico> yup
<knightwolf> yes
<ben-m> In General MIDI each program number has a particular instrument assigned to it, and for drum programs each note has a specific percussion instrument. A MIDI file which corresponds to the General MIDI standard can therefore be played via any General MIDI module and all the instruments and drum sounds will be correct, and similar to the way it would sound on any other General MIDI module. In ordinary MIDI there are no standard a
<ben-m> and that was a 5 marks question
<knightwolf> hey i read it but  i dont understand it lol
<ben-m> basically
<ben-m> as sean said
<`Rico> i think i covered that in a mock i did yesterday, but managed to write nearly half a page explaining it lol
<ben-m> general midi ensures there is compatability for midi files on different devices
<ben-m> rico - did you get all the main points in?
<knightwolf> laffin is that right rico
<`Rico> gotta get more precise
<seanm> rico have you got the model answers?
<`Rico> about compatibility yeah
<ben-m> yes very important, for time purposes as much as anything
<`Rico> nope
<`Rico> have u sean?
<seanm> I'll mail them to you
<`Rico> cool
<`Rico> thanks
<seanm> after the wkshop
<`Rico> great:)
* Audiocourses opted for wine instead
<seanm> me too
<ben-m> dont want to mix their chris
<`Rico> beer and wine, a lethal cocktail
<knightwolf> i'm on the phone
<Audiocourses> Uless it's a great tune right?
<seanm> got any liver with that chianti
<Audiocourses> lol
<ben-m> lol
<`Rico> hehe
<Audiocourses> 2 funny
<seanm> next week it could be mine
<ben-m> ok next...
<ben-m> A sample may be set to track the keyboard, or it might be set to constant pitch. What is the difference?
<seanm> if it tracks keyboard pitch will change if set to constant it won't
<seanm> with diff keys as it were
<ben-m> good sean but answer could have a little bit more clarity
<seanm> sorry have to get in before rico
<ben-m> haha
<seanm> my stars
<ben-m> thought that was the case ;)
<ben-m> so related...
<`Rico> if it is set to constant pitch it always plays at the same pitch no matter which key is pressed
<ben-m> what kind of sample would you not want to track?
<`Rico> man u just too damn fast
<seanm> percussion drums
<ben-m> good - why?
<seanm> pitch doesn't normally need to change but might sometimes
<ben-m> good
<ben-m> so usually 'pitched' instruments will require tracking
<ben-m> sampling still...
<ben-m> what is a one shot sample?
<seanm> a sample which plays to its end no matter when key is released
<`Rico> a sample that when triggered plays to the end
<seanm> hehe
<`Rico> doh
<`Rico> ;)
<ben-m> good stuff
<ben-m> again what would this be used for?
<`Rico> drum loops
<seanm> jdhgbveoohna,s.onnso fb
<ben-m> star for rico
<seanm> doh
<ben-m> sean - stand in the corner ;)
<`Rico> rofl
<seanm> hah
<ben-m> ok, so if we had a open and close hit hat sample
<seanm> you takin this too serius man
<ben-m> and we wanted a realistic performance
<Audiocourses> lol
<ben-m> what feature on a sampler could we use to ensure that the hats are replayed realistically?
<seanm> mute groups
<ben-m> you can now leave the corner
<`Rico> assign them both to a mute group
<`Rico> but keep the dunces hat on;)
<seanm> haha
<ben-m> lol
* Audiocourses makes notes for detention candidates
<seanm> lol
<`Rico> best behaviour
<seanm> hanibal checking recipes
<`Rico> lol
<ben-m> easy one here
<ben-m> Why is it necessary to defragment your disc at regular intervals?
<seanm> to free up unused hard disk space caused when files written and re-written to clusters
<knightwolf> so that the data retirved can be accurate
<ben-m> not quite right
<knightwolf> which one
<ben-m> both
<ben-m> ;)
<knightwolf> that be u sean lol
<knightwolf> awwwwwwwwww
<seanm> chris?
<Audiocourses> yes sean?
<seanm> hah
<knightwolf> i'm gonna have fun with this course
<seanm> you will
<ben-m> any more takers on the defrag?
<knightwolf> cuz if you dont defrag the computer wont run anymore?
<ben-m> nope
<knightwolf> :(
<ben-m> i'll pass it over to rico
<knightwolf> whats rico's answer?
<seanm> nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
<ben-m> for bonus points
<seanm> noooooooooooooooooooo
<ben-m> lol
* Audiocourses peers over to rico
<knightwolf> lol
<`Rico> reduce fragmentation of files, therefore reduce latency when opening
<`Rico> thats the best i can offer im afraid
<ben-m> getting close
<knightwolf> ahhhhhhh good answer ricoooooooo
<seanm> arrrrggghghhhh
<knightwolf> clappin thinks rico got it
* Audiocourses takes a look in his box of gold stars, sorts them a little.
<ben-m> i'm afraid noone has quite hit the nail on the head so to speak
<seanm> efficiency files are written all over the disk to clusters
<knightwolf> gimme
<ben-m> got any bronze stars there?
<knightwolf> gimme one
<`Rico> lol
<seanm> hehe
<Audiocourses> lol
<knightwolf> i only got old tin oneslol
<ben-m> ok here is the model answer
<knightwolf> i got it
<knightwolf> its mine
<knightwolf> move over boys lol
<seanm> lol
* Audiocourses states the golden rule of "stars are earnt"
<ben-m> lol
<knightwolf> earnttttttt? lol
<seanm> tell im tell im
<knightwolf> rlof
<ben-m> we're not communists here
<`Rico> lol
<ben-m> meritocratic society
<ben-m> ;)
<seanm> bloody hell
<knightwolf> laffin
<Audiocourses> lol so well put
<Audiocourses> Audiocourses.com walks alone
<Audiocourses> lol
<knightwolf> lol
<seanm> my head hurts
<`Rico> hehe
<knightwolf> ok whats the model answer?
<ben-m> look up
<ben-m> ^
<knightwolf> ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
<ben-m> its succintly put
<ben-m> spelling there
<ben-m> bit naff
<seanm> where?
<ben-m> my 'succintly'
<seanm> no the answer
<ben-m> you not all get it?
<ben-m> did anyone get it?
<seanm> no
<ben-m> try again..
<ben-m> <seanm> lol
<ben-m> * Audiocourses states the golden rule of "stars are earnt"
<knightwolf> yes you want us to look up the answer?
<ben-m> oops
<ben-m> those are the lines below it
<seanm> lol
<ben-m> ok
<ben-m> get that?
<seanm> lol
<ben-m> can you all see that?
* mudbone has joined #audiocourses
* mudbone has left #audiocourses
<seanm> you f.....in wit my mind homi
<knightwolf> no
<ben-m> hmmm
<knightwolf> lol
<Audiocourses> lol
<ben-m> right
<`Rico> i dont see it
<knightwolf> lmao
<ben-m> i'll try a line at a time
<knightwolf> i dont see it either lol
<knightwolf> is it invisible?
<ben-m> As sound files are stored by a system they are allocated blocks on the disc, and each location is entered in the directory. Old files are erased to make room for new ones, unless they are exactly the same size there will be more and more blocks that are not completely full so little spaces will be dotted around that are no longer being used.
<ben-m> see that ^
<`Rico> yup
<seanm> yes
<ben-m> These 'fragments will be used in the storage of new files but newer files will be more fragmented than old ones. When the disc becomes too fragmented then the access time for the sound files will increase and the disc will need to be defragmented using a software program for that purpose.
<ben-m> and that ^
<seanm> yes
<`Rico> uhuh
<seanm> i said that
<ben-m> must have been too big
<`Rico> lol
<ben-m> well, lets take a look shall we...
<seanm> look up
<knightwolf> lol
<seanm> lol
<ben-m> hmmm
<ben-m> you seem to be focusing on space
<seanm> middle distance
<ben-m> whereas the answer is actually referring to what is known as access or seek time
<seanm> oh i see
<seanm> yes
* knightwolf changes topic to 'first chat'
