Aux sends feeding the cue mix  Reply with quote

Up to now, I've been communicating with the tracking room via the PHONES socket on my Behringer Eurorack MX2642A

However, I'm aware that some (most?) people cue using the aux sends. But the aux sends on my desk are mono i.e. when I plug my headphones into one of the aux sends, it only comes through in one ear. Whereas the PHONES socket is stereo.

Am I to take it that when creating a cue mix using aux sends, you need a seperate mixer in the tracking room in order to be able to have a stereo mix?

What if you had two musicians each needing a headphone mix but one wanted, say, more guitar/less vox and the other more bass/less guitar?

hi karambos,

what will usually happen is that the aux sends are sent to a dedicated headphone amplifier and then the musician plugs headphones into this amp, whereby they get a mono signal BUT in both ears.

Aux sends are mono outputs, and your headphones have stereo TRS jacks hence the mono signal you get from plugging phones straight into the aux sockets.

You can of course use as many aux sends as your desk has available to create many different headphone mixes - i.e. use auz 1 for vocalist, aux 2 for guitarist, aux 3 for rhythm section etc

Looking at the specs of your desk, it says that you have 6 aux sends available so you could have 6 different headphone mixes available providing you had a headphone amp with 6 discrete inputs (the Behringer POWERPLAY PRO-8 HA8000 has a direct input for each of its 8 headphone amps)

Behringer offer a range of affordable headphone amps ('powerplay' series) which are handy for these purposes.

hope this helps,
ben m

Many thanks for the reply.

There must be something I don't understand. I had a look at the Powerplay Por-8 (Thomann has a really helpful facility of being able to rotate equipment) and at the back, like you said there is a dedicated direct input for each of the 8 channels. However, 8 channels is way too much for my purposes. I need 4 at an absolute max. So I looked at the Powerplay Pro XL and that doesn't. That has two socket per headphone channel with a message saying "Tip left channel Ring right channel" So if I took an ordinary instrument cable from, say aux 1 and plugged it into one of those sockets, presumably, I'll get the signal in just one ear. Am I right or am I wrong?

PS - another headphone amp I looked at is the SMPro Audio hp4 which would be ideal but I'm not sure if those Left and Right inputs genuinely mean Left and right in the headphones or just inputs one and two

as always I'm grateful for any advice

This should do the job for you;
http://www.behringer.com/HA4600/index.cfm?lang=ENG

It is 4 channels, has a 'aux' input for each channel as well as a global direct input, can work in stereo and mono etc

The link to the German site showed a unit that would only allow 2 different headphone feeds - this Behringer will allow 4.

Hope this helps,
ben m
