Besides the normal reverb, chorus, flange, etc... What do you think Satriani uses to beef up that guitar sound? Are we talking Aural Enhancers or what? Stereo wideners? I know there's a lot of compression there but it just seems like a lot of harmonics or harmonic distortion, too. Anyone? |

Yeah he can play a bit man!!
You know though from what I have heard he has some radically different sounds on track to track, so if you could be specific, like which track and album I could have a listen. _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

Ok, how about "Cryin'" from "The Extremist". I know that's gotta be more than just distortion and compressor. |

Did I ask too dumb of a question? Does anyone know the basis for Joe Satriani's guitar tone? I'm talking about the "behind the scenes" sound processors. Line 6 claims that he had used the POD Pro on their website, but what does he use on the "pre" and "post" positions? |

Joe employs a number of pedal based effects. He has been known to use the old Ibanez Tube Screamer distort pedals. Two of his main effects are Chandler echos and dunlop wah pedals.
If you're looking for something to get those sounds have a look at NI Guitar Rig. You can cop pretty much any guitar tone using this modeling software. The best part is that it actually sounds like mic'd amps and fx. |

I have an original 70's Ibanez tube screamer. That's not exactly the "key". This maybe just my opinion, but whatever he's using is better quality than some software plug-ins. |

As far as i'm aware Satch uses a technique (originally used by (Sir) Jimmy Page) where he mic's a guitar cabinet with multiple microphones in different positions and dedicates a track for each one. He then mixes each track individually with different E.Q'S. This multi tracking technique can drastically effect the finished mix guitar-wise. this is evident if you've ever seen Joe live as his guitar sounds rather thin in comparison to his recorded tone. |

as being a huge satch fan, those songs you mentioned were back in the day when he actually used a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal....through the clean channel of his marshall amp. Those tones were way back in his day....so a small amount of chorus is there too....(he used a Boss super chorus).
his 2 delay effects are set up so one is around 400ms, and the other is set to 500-600 ms. he stagers both delays so it gives a washy reverb feel, rather than a hard delay.
his boss DS-1 settings are ( Dist- max, tone- 9 oclock, level- 12 oclock). he didnt really use compression effects live, and his nasaly tone on those songs are mostly from his dimarzio "FRED" pickup. |
