| Direct Box Question |
|
|
Hi All:
I finally am getting a recording unit (Roland VS 2400) and as a result will probably be asking a variety of "newbie" questions along the way. As a regular reader over the past year, your knowledge sharing is greatly appreciated.
Anyway on to business:
I will be needing to record my bass, electric guitars (I have a pod XT 2) and keyboard and am wondering if I am better of using an active Direct Box rather than passive. If so, does anyone have a modestly priced (<$100) recommendation?
Thanks in advance. |

| active DI vs Passive DI |

Go for an active over a passive. Basically, until you reach the higher end of the market, actives are generally better. A Countryman Type 85 or a BSS model would be good; you could probably one up on eBay for around $100 or less. Type 85's give beautiful bass tone and will be perfectly adequate for a keyboard or Pod.
A good general rule is if your source has passive pickups, try to use an active, if it's got active pickups or it's powered (ie: keyboard) then you can get away with a passive. This is because passive DI's can't handle high impedance sources so well. In fact, the only real advantage of a passive DI is you don't need to worry about batteries or feeding it phantom power. |
