What is the best speed to burn CD's at and why? There seems to be much conflict of opinion about this. Some swear that slower(2x or 4x) is the only way,and others say it makes no difference. |

it really doesn't matter what speed you use as long as you're using reliable professional cd decks (e.g. pioneer/denon). if you are intending to use it for home and car audio, i would suggest lower speeds of 2x up to 16x cd burning. most non-pro equipements are less than 16 bit, as a result, they have a hard time reading pc burnt cds which are 32x and above.

Hey Daz,
A few years back it was true that 1x, 2x burns yielded better results for audio (data CDs can be burnt at any speed with the same quality)
Nowadays with faster drives this isn't always the case. Each drive will have a 'sweet spot' - by this I mean a speed which produces the least errors during the burn. In some newer drives this may be 10/12x or similiar.
There are some applications available that allow you to determine the speed that produces the best results. Of the top of my head I can't remember the name but I'll have a look later on.
Baguios point about good quality media is also very valid - for audio use good quality CDs will yield better results and longevity.
Hope this helps,

I was talking to a mastering engineer in London about this and he told me to always use the slowest speed possible when transfering a premaster or master. Forget about the high speed of your burner. The slower the speed the less errors are burnt to cd. He told me he rarely goes above 4X and if it is a master he usually burns at 2X. |

well Jonny, theres no harm in playing it safe. it may be just as good at higher speeds it may not. if you have the time do it at 2/4x it cant do any harm. _________________ If In Doubt...Hit It With a Hammer, If Still In Doubt... Find a Bigger Hammer. |

I burn at 52x with my power book. I've never had a bad burn yet on a cdr. I also burn at 8x on dvds and not had a bad burn yet. |
