mixing for radio  Reply with quote

I've recently started mixing radio sessions. Some of them sound fine, whilst others sound awful - over compressed/limited and "pumping". I think there is a method of mixing, specifically for radio. Can anyone share the secret?

Can you elaborate on this, what do you mean exactly?

Multi-Band  Reply with quote

One of the things to do is to listen to what FM compression can actually do before you release your tunes.

In Cubase SX there is a multi-band compressor which has an FM radio setting which is actually very realistic to what will happen to your tunes.

The "trick" if looking for one would be to de-engineer from that point. You know, reduce the level and/or e.q. aspects which might then fall below the station compression radar, (he says without not too much hope)

The main point is to realize that FM radio and MTV will multi-band compress to ludicrous degree.

The other thing to understand is that typically the vocals for a radio mix are always higher in level. (yes you give the radio station a radio mix with the vocals up).
