Welcome to your Recording Techniques module at Audiocourses.com. For those of you unfamiliar with e-learning you will find that you are in a student centred, self-directed environment. This means that the emphasis of the programme is about finding out for yourself what you need to do. The shift away from teacher led instruction has been happening throughout education and continues to do so. Personally, I whole-heartedly believe in the student centred approach, and the richness it can yield. Added to that, being a sound engineer or working within any of the media fields requires people with self directed motivation. A lovely little tale goes like this:

On the subject of Studio Maintenance

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. Three Assistant Engineers are in a studio trying to figure out why the microphone for the vocalist isn’t working. Two are in the back scratching their heads. The third one (an audiocourses.com student) is waist-deep in wires, has soldering iron in hand, and is fixing the problem. Who do you think got promoted?

Ok so I like throwing a ‘gag’ in here and there, but if you think about it for a second the little ‘jolly’ indicates the importance of taking ownership of your study, making it yours and setting yourself goals, rather than waiting for them to be set. Naturally you will be ‘waist deep’ in assignment deadlines, but you are encouraged to identify for yourself what you need to know and do, in order to pass them. More about the assignments later!!

Special features of the course include your own Log-Book and the Live Workshops that you are required to attend, and the Online Classrooms (here) where you will have the opportunity to discuss course subjects with fellow students, staff and professionals from industry. The log-book may sound like a fancy name for a set of notes, but it is actually a very important set, in which we suggest you record your learning, whether as rough notes or polished paragraphs. When you are coming up to an assignment, we shall ask you to share some of your thoughts with other students in your tutorial group using the Live Workshop and/or forums.

Now and then you may find problems arise such as having difficulties with the academic nature of the course or with just "fitting it all in", due to your children or financial situation. Please don't be afraid of seeking me out and having a chat about any concerns you may have. You can usually find me in my office (on yahoo), and I always answer my e-mails.

You will experience for yourself, what it is like to be part of a vibrant learning community that incorporates many technologies and methodologies into its design. The course is now in its fourth year and I am proud of the way it is developing and continues to develop. I sincerely hope you will find your time with us at Audiocourses.com, both intellectually and socially stimulating.
