why is it that when the speed on audio sample is reduced, the pitch changes?

thanks

Sampling rate  Reply with quote

If a digital audio sample has been recorded at a specific clock rate (i.e. 44.1 kHz) then it will need to replayed at the same clock rate in order for the slopes of the waveform to be re-constructed correctly.

The point is that the clock has meaning against the individual sample periods.

Playing the sample back at a lower clock rate (sampling rate) will make the slope of the waveform to be less steep and therefore lower in pitch.

Sample rate converison however, corrects this, as re-sampling takes place.

Does that help?

Analog Tape  Reply with quote

Yeah that helped.
That is to do with digital audio. What about a tape? Sometimes when the motor slows down, the pitch reduces. But there is no sampling rate in an analog tape...is there?

thanks

P.S : I seemed to have stopped getting mail notifications about topics I'm 'watching'.

Cycles  Reply with quote

If a tape is slowed down the information going passed the playback head is slower, again making the frequency or rate slower.

You need to understand a fundamental concept that pitch is related to time, it is the number of cycles per second, less cycles per second is a lower pitch.
