Problem with Toslink audio signal.  Reply with quote

HI there. I'm new here. Maybe you could answer some questions.

I have an Event EZBus mixer connected to a Steinberg VSL2020 card using ADAT toslink cables. The problem is a faint vynil click type noise during playback. Its easy to hear it in headphones. I'm not sure what this can be. Maybe its because the Word Clock is using the [$15] ADAT cable. Im thinking of linking the two devices together with a BNC connector cable, do you think it will help get rid of the noise?
Could I use a regular TV Coaxial cable with BNC connectors?
Or is the SPDIF connection better?

What other causes could there be?

Here is two samples I made using my setup.

I would appreciate any help
thank you

Jitter  Reply with quote

Hmm interesting one that, certainly try the other cable configurations, sounds like it might be a small amount of jitter.

Regular cable should be fine, give it a go.

Have you tried the gear with other combinations...? is it new?

Yes, the equipment is new. eh,,, I don't know wether its the EZBus or the VSL2020. Event doesnt answer my emails, maybe I should write to Steinberg.
I'm not sure with what other gear I can try it, dont have anything else. I'm just gonna go and buy some cables for the SPDIF tommorow, see if it works.

About the jitter. So you heard the samples, do you think that might be word clock disrupting the adat signal?
I've read an article saying that word clock is analog, and it's not a good idea to let it run together with digital signals.

p.s. I just noticed another thing. Playing back trough USB from Cubase SX makes the sound slow down, very unpleasant. But when I play using USB from Sound Forge, all is ok. I think thats a problem with Cubase, not realated to the adat thing.

If the click sound is periodic and around 1Khz or has a harmonic of 1Khz , the problem is likely caused by the USb chip which will often have this problem (perhaps even if it not being used, it can still be in operaion and cause noise) . As previously noted this is attributed to jitter, and with USB no clock is provided making a sync very difficult, especially when sent to and from the computer as most USB audio chips are syncronous not asycronuos. USB 1.0 or 1.1 will transmit in packets every 1ms , hence the noise occuring at 1Khz. If his is the cause, the problem is the hardware, if not, no worries, one less thing to consider.
