Week 5 - Synthesis 2 PRACTICAL  Reply with quote

This week we can have a look at creating some sounds with subtractive synthesis.

There is a free VST instrument called 'Neutron'* which is in the 'benm' folder of the UPLOAD STATION.

Inside the .zip file is the .dll file which you simply copy to your VST Plugins folder (usually this is c:/steinberg/vstplugins)

Once this is loaded you can access the Neutron as a VSTi.

Neutron offers 2 VCOs as well as a noise generator. Obviously we also have VCA, VCF and 2xLFO.

What I'd like you to attempt this week is to recreate the sounds of some acoustic instruments.

I'd like to start with these;

Kick Drum
Snare Drum
Hi Hat
Flute
Piano

As we mentioned in the workshop, consider the ADSR envelopes as well as the most suitable sound source (sine, noise, saw etc)

Lets try to get some dialogue going in this thread also.

*Neutron was created by B. Serrano and is also available from the following link as well as many other free VST instruments; http://bserrano.free.fr/VST.htm

I uploaded a dreaded file finally. Looped with hats, kick, snare, flute. Piano still is not happening but I'll try to get something going that sounds reasonable. Files in Chemira, ADSR instruments.

Cheers

it is still a work in progress, i uploaded the flute and the piano as well as the kick drum [which is a definate work in progress]. I have found it very difficult to reproduce the percussion instruments - and the piano and flute are still not perfect.

uploaded my approximation of drum sounds in my THX1138 folder and I stuck the patch files for each sound in there. Not got anything even closely resembling piano or flute yet Laughing but I am working on it.

Anyone manage any flute or piano sounds yet? Can't seem to be able to get anything even vaguely resembling either Laughing
I uploaded the .fxp files for my drum sounds if they are of any help to anyone.

hey folks, Week 5 practical is almost done. I just uploaded a drum beat but am still working on a piano and flute sound. This beat was made with an FM soft synth found in Soundforge. Noise was the sound source I used for the kick, snare and hi-hat. Creating the ADSR curves involved alot of time and as Rachel put it, lots of coffee. Later on , Darrell

Well Done!  Reply with quote

just had a listen to your drumbeat hoaxwagon and I'm very impressed.
It sounds like you have added some room reverb to the signal to give a sense of space.
The kick drum is particularly impressive in my opinion.

Well Done!
