Week 5 - Practical  Reply with quote

NO questions this week.

Fun Time!

Practical Assignment

24 track mixdown...

You will find 24 tracks of audio here: http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/week5

Download them and unzip them to a folder.

All files are equal in length and of the same format, if you place each one up to the left locator in your software each one will be synchronised with their partners.

The tracks represent the individual tracks of a 24 track recording taken from a recording studio. These are the raw files with zero editing and processing.

The objective is to create a mix that is suitable for releasing.

However, let's leave the mastering for the next week. This week I am only concerned with how you mix the tracks and process them.

There is 330MB here, so go get a coffee while they download.

Post your questions in this thread... I'm hoping this will create a lot of dialogue.

As there are so many skills and technique that this will highlight for discussion.

Have fun!

P.S. Anyone without broadband go for zip 11 (rhodes patch) and zip 17 (vocals) you could then use your own software and resources to create a mix (drum loops etc).

Ok, I'm getting on with the mix but the files I have downloaded (all 24), tracks 6, 15 and 24 have no audio on them. Maybe theres copy and paste going on here. Anyway, I have three spare tracks to work with.

Blank tracks  Reply with quote

if I remember correctly those were simply blank tracks, i.e. straight of the tape, but nothing was recorded on them.

Hello RT students, thought I'd start with the track/file list to see if people are hearing the same thing as I am.
Tracks: 1) Snare 2) Tom right 3) tom Left 4) hihats 5) kick 6) Blank 7) ride 8 ) Overhead left 9) Overhead right 10) Bass 11) Keys 12) Vocals Male 13) bongo 14) male Vox/Sax solo 15) blank 16) bongo 17) femal Vox 18 ) blank 19) Synth 20) Electric Piano 21) Electric Piano 22) synth 23) Electric Guitar 24) blank.

NOTE: The toms/Overhead relationship I did just using time alignment visually linking the tom to the overhead that more closely picked up the tom timing wise.

I will say the background noise, room modes and channel noise pose problems but gating and EQ help out. I'm going to search for some resonant frequencies to find out where to cut. Female vox have room reverb that I don't like at all but hey I won't be retracking any time soon.
POST Something to tell me if I'm crazy or just mildly challenged. Talk talk talk.
I will say that after I got a basic mix I lost everything again. Crying or Very sad Or should I say the project opened up with NO tracks so I just had to close project without saving, then Reload them into the audio folder. Think about all the troubleshooting that I have to do which makes me think out side the box. I can't use automation which will kill me slowly but hey what else can you do. I love SONAR 3, Evil or Very Mad If this is not advertising for a great recycle bin I don't know what else would be. Razz

Cheers Post yer thoughts.

Mix  Reply with quote

I'm surprised there is not more chatter going on here, does this mean everyone is creating a super modern commercial radio friendly mix?

I have a Karaoke mix right now but still want to spend some more time with SONAR. It's a pretty static mix, without automation so far so I think I'll have to resort to Cuts and Fade envelopes only. Volume/Pan automation is sudden death for my project, Lesson Learned. I've gated and EQ'ed, compressed and added some reverb. Hate the lead vocals room sound.
Anyway talk about something or thoughts at least.

Cheers

I know a ton of engineers who use cuts n fades rather than automation anyway, they spend hours zooming in and chopping etc... it's not a bad way to go.

What's the important thing about this style of music that we must capture in the mix?

The energy of the song and the dynamics are important here, as well as instrument seperation. There seems to be quite a bit of noise that needs to be cleaned up. I have chosen the "spend hours zooming in and chopping" method. The vocal track #17 does sound like it has some compression on it or something but a great set of tracks to work with overall I'd say. Does Anyone know what we are supposed to do with our mixes for this week? Peace, Darrell
