Noise reduction is a big ole subject to be frank bt let me try and summarize it to give some pointers.

Basically noise reduction is used to reduce noise (hiss etc) that is potentially added by the recorder/playback system, this can be a tape machine for example.

It works by a process of compression and expansion.

signal > compressed > noise added (tape machine) > expanded > noise reduced

If you are referring to noise gates, then it is a different subject.

No im not referring to noise gates.
What got me asking that question is, I was checking out the Waves bundle plugins, and theres a plugin called X-Noise, since noise consisits of almost all frequencies, when it is 'reduced' why isnt the audio track affected that much, since the audio track shares frequencies with the noise...?

Thanks...

The noise is removed when the signal is not present, generally.

If removed when the signal IS present then yes, the signal quality can suffer, the more reduction the more sufference.
