Rode makes exceptional microphones for vocals.
There latest creation "K2" won awards for the best studio mic of 2004. It's a tube microphone with a very nice, warm sound.
The best thing to do is rent a few (Neumann TLM103, AKG 414, ect.) and test them prior to purchase as they may not be the best for you.
Does the same cologne smell the same on everyone? Of course not. You get the picture. |

Hi,
It also depends on how "serious" is the voice in the mix and how much treatment it will get.
If you are going to tune it a lot, effect it a lot, and definition ain't that important, even (excelent) Shure's PG58 will do a great job (at around 50 bucks).
If on the other hand you wish to capture every nuance (kind of like a female gentle vocal way loud in front of a discrete orchestra) and have a really excelent acoustic treated room, by all means invest in the "creme de la creme", but they wont be much good if not acompanied by "creme de la creme" pre-amps, eq's and the likes of it.
Remeber that nowadays you can do a lot with a little, gaining a little bit more to buy a lot.
Kind Regards,
AMR
