mrbisto (22:11:35): Hi all.
rv_1210 (22:11:36): a few of u on that now
mpfcoh (22:11:57): just signed up this week, so havent got the materials yet
x016178 (22:13:44): the materials I think are the forums and the world wibe web.http://www.audiocourses.com/forum-218.html You should have access to everything at this point.
g_everill (22:13:53): chris i just bought yure ebook on compression and cant find it anywhere do you have a link
instinct27651982 (22:14:0 : nah g_everill.. for the pma course you get a book and session CD's
mrbisto (22:14:27): g_everill, will mail that.
g_everill (22:14:40): ok thanks
x016178 (22:14:51): ah different course. I'm in recording techniques.
(22:14:5 : beatworld_productions has joined the conference.
mpfcoh (22:15:24): x0: yeah, I got a little confused for a minute then...
beatworld_productions (22:15:25): hi everyone sorry I'm late
mixindown (22:15:40): Hi beatworld
hoaxwagon (22:15:40): hey beat
rv_1210 (22:15:45): hi beatworld
instinct27651982 (22:16:00): hey beatworld.. whats new?
beatworld_productions (22:16:25): nothing much sorry I'm late guys
beatworld_productions (22:16:30): late church service
beatworld_productions (22:17:40): where r we?
jaminuk (22:17:51): brb
beatworld_productions (22:17:59): r u guys getting two messages at a time from me?
x016178 (22:18:17): nope
mrbisto (22:18:20): nope
mpfcoh (22:18:21): beat: not me
instinct27651982 (22:18:32): not here
beatworld_productions (22:18:36): ok cool only from my site I see two messages
mrbisto (22:19:26): just the one here guys
mrbisto (22:19:47): So how's the week gone people?
quinnersboy (22:19:59): right can anyone tell me how to change from wav to mp3 in tracktion??
acousticalweaponsdivision (22:20:16): weeks gone ok
mrbisto (22:20:30): I don't have tracktion, anyone have it? Ben?
jaminuk (22:20:31): re: MP3 - you'll get better quality using a free ap like WinLAME
beatworld_productions (22:20:39): Had a great week except for me messing up my assingment
mixindown (22:20:46): Weeks gone good.
jaminuk (22:21:06): winlame here; http://winlame.sourceforge.net/download.php
jaminuk (22:22:1 : there is probably a 'file export' option somewhere that will allow you to save in MP3 rather than .wav
quinnersboy (22:23:05): i can't see one
jaminuk (22:23:1 : you on traktion 1 or 2?
quinnersboy (22:23:25): 1
jaminuk (22:24:49): if you try to save an audio file, is there a drop down menu next to the .wav box that offers formats like aiff etc?
beatworld_productions (22:25:09): it depends what you using to create the file.
quinnersboy (22:25:26): yeah
jaminuk (22:25:59): in the drop down box is there not a mp3/mpeglayer3 option of any kind?
quinnersboy (22:26:09): nope
jaminuk (22:26:35): hmmm
instinct27651982 (22:27:04): isn't there a 'export as..' option?
quinnersboy (22:27:39): it's alright i downloaded a program to change formats
quinnersboy (22:27:40): sorted
jaminuk (22:28:12): that winlame i gave you the link too - that is worth checking out as it uses a decent mp3 algorithim
quinnersboy (22:28:26): yeah i used it
quinnersboy (22:28:30): cheers
mrbisto (22:28:51): sooo ...... everyone has been busy i heard. mixing away....
mrbisto (22:29:20): The majority of you have worked on a mix of "stuff Like That"
mrbisto (22:29:39): You were given 24 individual tracks...
rv_1210 (22:30:01): hehe i remember that, couldnt get it out of my head for days
mrbisto (22:30:15): And the task was to create YOUR mix.. rico i guess that's mixing for ya..
mrbisto (22:30:42): You were to download the tracks, load them into your host application... and get busy..
mrbisto (22:31:11): What i'd like to do first (before we listen to them) is to open up the chat to discuss how it went.. problems etc.. difficult areas..
mrbisto (22:31:53): Persoanlly, I feel they were not easy tracks to work with, for many reasons.. also mixing a live band is a whole lot harder than mixing samples and electronic sounds...
mrbisto (22:32:23): So, how did you all get on?
x016178 (22:32:26): Hi all, my big question. how'd u get rid of the background hum you could hear from the drum tracks? I tried noise gating and couldn't adjust the threshold without cutting out the snare.
mrbisto (22:32:40): Good point Brent.. anyone?
instinct27651982 (22:32:56): noise remover plugins
beatworld_productions (22:33:09): sorry to interupt Chris the ftp is not allowing me to post tracks. Don't know why.
mrbisto (22:33:22): beatworld IM me..
mixindown (22:33:40): some of the noise was loud so I simply redone the drum.
x016178 (22:34:17): You got on a drum and rerecorded it?
mixindown (22:34:49): No, well, used a sample with the keyboard.
mixindown (22:35:06): Used a controller keyboard with emulator x sample.
mrbisto (22:35:45): Can you expand on that mixindown?
mixindown (22:35:55): Could have done with another week on this.
mixindown (22:37:06): had "some" success gating the snare.
mixindown (22:37:23): But had to redo the hi hat. How about everyone else?
mixindown (22:37:42): With the Emulator x....
mixindown (22:38:12): I have this plugged in to a DAW and I'm using cubase 5 for the master stereo track.
mixindown (22:38:3 : I'm recording onto a Mackie HDD so I simply played the keyboard along with the track.
mixindown (22:38:59): Then did a little wave editing to get the timing a little tighter.
mixindown (22:39:25): I have only just found out though that you can get a midi plug in to trigger audio tracks...
mixindown (22:39:34): Or the other way around, I'm not sure.
mixindown (22:39:49): Would be a great time saver that.
mrbisto (22:40:04): yes indeed
x016178 (22:40:1 : So you used the original track for place holding and then pasted your own samples where there was a snare?
mixindown (22:41:12): On the Mackie HDD you have virtual tracks (8 vertual tracks per track)...
mixindown (22:41:2 : I played the instruments in to the virtual track...
mixindown (22:41:49): then selected that as the main track.. Hope that makes sence!
x016178 (22:41:54): yeah.
mixindown (22:41:55): Mind you....
mixindown (22:42:13): There were only 21 tracks so I had three to play with anyway.
(22:42:40): g_everill has joined the conference.
mixindown (22:42:47): everything was played in live, then edited, cut, copy paste, etc.
mixindown (22:43:05): Would have loved to redo the snare!
g_everill (22:43:15): finally
mixindown (22:43:20): I ended up cutting u
mixindown (22:43:34): cutting up the kick and copy and pasting it.
mixindown (22:44:03): didn't use the overheads on the files, also redone the crash.
x016178 (22:44:43): Any problems getting the timing right for each when you're pasting? Seems like you'd have to do some tweaking.
mixindown (22:45:12): Yeah, you spot on there. Timing is an issue with the Mackie when copy and pasting....
mixindown (22:45:39): Though, you can "line things up" to say, kick and hi hat. That makes things easire.
x016178 (22:46:06): All said and done. I'm curious how much time did it take you to redo the drums?
mixindown (22:46:0 : You can visually see where things are coming in if you blow the file up big enough.
acousticalweaponsdivision (22:46:26): must have taken ages
mrbisto (22:46:30): Mixindown this seems a very long winded way of working.. I guess you were pleased to find there are easier ways of "drum replacement" ?
mixindown (22:46:45): You got it boss!
mrbisto (22:47:00): Before we do discuss drum replacement...
x016178 (22:47:02): Would be great to have a find and replace feature.
beatworld_productions (22:47:09): I find what you found a solution to the problem very interesting
mixindown (22:47:12): yep.
mrbisto (22:47:31): I'd like to hear from the others.. maybe some of you didn't think to replace drums, and felt they were usable?
mpfcoh (22:47:4 : i'm sure I've seen an app that triggers drum samles from a wave file
mpfcoh (22:48:11): can't remember what it's called tho
jaminuk (22:48:25): drumagog
jaminuk (22:48:34): http://www.drumagog.com/
jaminuk (22:48:35): ?
mpfcoh (22:48:42): thats the one!
mpfcoh (22:49:06): tried using it a while ago with limited success
mrbisto (22:49:13): There are a couple ways of doing this..
mrbisto (22:49:32): http://www.audiocourses.com/article339.html that's one way..
mrbisto (22:50:17): Ben would you mind going into this one?
jaminuk (22:50:26): sure thing
mrbisto (22:50:2 : Drum replacement.. ta
jaminuk (22:50:4 : ok
jaminuk (22:51:10): so our objective here is to replace a drum sound in a previously recorded track
jaminuk (22:51:23): as chris has just posted
jaminuk (22:51:33): a VST drum trigger can be used to perform this task
jaminuk (22:51:56): so the way this works is quite simple
jaminuk (22:52:12): it is used as a plugin in a host such as cubase etc
jaminuk (22:52:37): the plugin responds to audio
jaminuk (22:53:00): when audio is detected (dependent on the criteria you set within the plugin)
jaminuk (22:53:07): a MIDI note is generated
jaminuk (22:53:35): now, this is useful for many reasons
jaminuk (22:53:4 : firstly
jaminuk (22:54:01): if we want to change the drum sounds (as mixindown did)
jaminuk (22:54:15): we can load up some drum samples we like into a hardware or software audio sampler
jaminuk (22:54:26): samplers obviously react to MIDI
jaminuk (22:54:49): so by setting the correct MIDI settings, we could trigger a kick drum sample
jaminuk (22:55:11): this can obviously be used across all drums
jaminuk (22:55:21): there are other benefits too
jaminuk (22:55:46): if the timing in the source material is poor, you can also tidy it up by shifting MIDI notes
jaminuk (22:56:16): the second option is to use something like drumagog which i posted the link for a minute ago
jaminuk (22:56:26): this works in a slightly different way
jaminuk (22:56:41): drumagog acts as the sampler and the trigger
jaminuk (22:57:00): so you would insert drumagog as a plugin on the kick channel (for example)
jaminuk (22:57:12): then in that instance of drumagog you would load a suitable kick drum sound
jaminuk (22:57:33): by tweaking settings such as threshold (similiar controls to a gate)
jaminuk (22:57:56): you can find the optimal settings for the drum track you are working on
jaminuk (22:58:15): this method doesn't really give you the flexibility of timing that MIDI does
jaminuk (22:58:45): however, for just audio replacement it is more configurable and can (to an extent) work around things like drum spill across the mics to prevent false triggering
jaminuk (22:59:05): anything you'd want to add to that chris?
mrbisto (22:59:51): No ben that's good.. I like the way you pointed out convenience.. with drumagog.. and with the first method you have complete siming control over individual hits.
mrbisto (23:00:01): Thanks ben, I'm sure there will be questions now.
jaminuk (23:00:40):
mrbisto (23:01:07): quiet tonight huh?
mixindown (23:01:10): Can this be used with any audio signal, vocals say?
mrbisto (23:01:12): they must be mixed out..
jaminuk (23:01:17): ha
jaminuk (23:01:29): mixindown - any audio can be used as trigger
jaminuk (23:01:37): also
jaminuk (23:01:47): you can 'play drums' on your saucepans
jaminuk (23:01:49): mic em up
jaminuk (23:01:5 : then replace the sounds with real drums
jaminuk (23:02:04): or similiar
mixindown (23:02:0 : Ah, that was my next question.
jaminuk (23:02:17):
mixindown (23:02:20): It's easy to play drums on your lap.
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:02:30): heh cool, i'll have to try that
jaminuk (23:02:35): good fo hand percussion like congas, bongos, djembe etc
mixindown (23:02:4 : so these signals could be used to trigger samples.
jaminuk (23:03:00): absolutely
mixindown (23:03:17): Fantastic.
jaminuk (23:03:22): of course they needn't be used to trigger drums - you could trigger anything you have as an audio file
mixindown (23:03:46): This sounds like a very creative tool.
jaminuk (23:03:55): certainly is!
(23:04:03): g_everill has left the conference.
jaminuk (23:04:17): might get odd looks from the missus though
mixindown (23:04:24): lol
(23:04:26): instinct27651982 has left the conference.
jaminuk (23:04:27): her best pots and pans lined up with close micing
mrbisto (23:04:36): lol
jaminuk (23:04:41): and you going hell for leather at them with wooden spoons!
jaminuk (23:04:51):
mixindown (23:04:59): Get all the sticky bits out of the bottom though. lol
jaminuk (23:05:07): haha
mpfcoh (23:05:14): jaminuk, you mentioned that with drumagog, you can work around things like spill, but from what i remember, that was one of the biggest problems I had with it - false triggers from spill, etc
jaminuk (23:05:29): yes with newer versions (v3+ i believe)
mpfcoh (23:05:35): can you expand on how you work around that?
jaminuk (23:05:35): there are filtering options
jaminuk (23:05:55): if memory serves me correctly
mpfcoh (23:06:04): right, so you can filter out certain frequencies now?
jaminuk (23:06:04): it works rather like a frequency dependent sidechain
jaminuk (23:06:10): yes
jaminuk (23:06:1 : so if you were triggering a snare
mpfcoh (23:06:21): good stuff
jaminuk (23:06:27): you could ask it to ignore abouve 8kHz for example
mpfcoh (23:06:41): filter out the hats
jaminuk (23:06:46): yes
jaminuk (23:07:02): also
jaminuk (23:07:0 : you can use 'multi samples'
jaminuk (23:07:17): so if the drummer plays a rimshot for instance
jaminuk (23:07:23): you can manipulate the controls
mpfcoh (23:07:27): cool
jaminuk (23:07:31): so certain audio levels trigger different samples
jaminuk (23:07:35): quiet = rim
jaminuk (23:07:3 : loud = snare
jaminuk (23:07:40): and so on
jaminuk (23:08:29): there are other options like quick x-fading
jaminuk (23:08:39): useful if you want to keep parts of the original track in
jaminuk (23:09:03): in fact i also believe that newer versions can output MIDI
jaminuk (23:09:10): but I haven't tried that myself on v3
mixindown (23:09:3 : Obviously, the good thing about this plug in is that it will keep the original timing of the drummer. Keep the groove if its there.
jaminuk (23:09:45): yes absolutely
jaminuk (23:09:5 : if it is there in the first place as you mention
x016178 (23:10:0 : this will be a cool thing to try. in cubase?
x016178 (23:10:21): The snare has such a range. I was reading that the trick is to create a band pass filter and cut off the frequency. So if you're happy with the samples you have, it seems you could apply the filter and be happy without using demog. Has anyone tried this or know where the band pass filter is in cubasse
jaminuk (23:10:22): yes it will work in any VST host
jaminuk (23:10:41): bandpass filter either in eq or a plugin as insert
x016178 (23:12:05): Was anyone successful in this mixing project just using a filter?
mpfcoh (23:12:34): x: the band pass filter in Cubase SX3 is called Q, and you find it in the plugins uder "Filter"
mpfcoh (23:12:39): i think...
jaminuk (23:12:54): yes i think you're right
jaminuk (23:13:02): alternatively do it in the eq section
x016178 (23:13:03): cool.
mrbisto (23:13:06): Hey guys I was thinking as an hour has passed so quickly we ought to have a listen to some of these mixes.. Mixin as you have been on the case here shall we check yours first?
jaminuk (23:13:0 : there are q controls on the mid eqs
hoaxwagon (23:13:31): My old computer is on its death bed. Cant listen to music today. I am getting a new one. sorry
mixindown (23:13:3 : Yeah, go ahead.
mrbisto (23:13:4 : www.audiocourses.com/part3/upload/jalevin9/jlevinstuffltmp3.mp3
mrbisto (23:13:56): that yours?
mixindown (23:14:12): yes
mrbisto (23:14:19): streaming now here
jaminuk (23:16:04): vocals are good level - track is missing the hats/overheads
jaminuk (23:16:1 : hats more so
mrbisto (23:16:22): and a bit of punch
mixindown (23:16:51): Yeah, snare could be better.
jaminuk (23:16:56): i'd guess that maybe your speakers at home are bass heavy?
(23:17:11): x016178 has left the conference.
mixindown (23:17:13): I put a lot of bass on there didn't I.
mixindown (23:17:31): Just felt good.
jaminuk (23:17:32): its more the kick drum level i feel
mixindown (23:17:57): Yeah, it could come down a little.
jaminuk (23:18:16): its probably more down to comression
mixindown (23:18:24): ok.
jaminuk (23:18:40): but considering your drum work its good!
mrbisto (23:18:47): yes good work dude...
jaminuk (23:18:50): did you do much panning?
mixindown (23:18:57): thanks bosses...
mrbisto (23:18:5 : Impressed, it's not easy at all that track..
mixindown (23:19:07): Not a lot
mixindown (23:19:23): I only had a day on it so.....
jaminuk (23:19:26): right
mrbisto (23:19:52): just to give everyone an idea of drum replacement...
mrbisto (23:20:25): here is one i did early (very drum heavy) to show it's doable..
mrbisto (23:20:2 : www.audiocourses.com/part3/upload/chrish/stuff trigger sample.mp3
mrbisto (23:20:40): this wa susing the technique ben mentioned... VST drum tiggering,
mpfcoh (23:21:21): mrb: tht link doesn't work for me
mrbisto (23:21:27): ahh hang on
rv_1210 (23:21:2 : same here
jaminuk (23:21:34): copy whole line
jaminuk (23:21:55): love the reverb on the string stabs!
mrbisto (23:21:55): http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/upload/chrish/stuff%20trigger%20sample.mp3
mrbisto (23:22:59): hehe, you guys get the idea, drum replacement is VERY VERY common
mrbisto (23:23:10): typically kick and snare
mixindown (23:23:11): Drums are kickin'. Sound great. The whole mix is alive!
mrbisto (23:24:05): Guitar is a bit "drunk" hehe
mrbisto (23:24:20): but you guys really ought to try to replace drums in this manner...
mpfcoh (23:24:30): sounds like a really professional mix. Nice one!
mixindown (23:24:41): Interesting mix though. sounds very pro.
topdog_bossfan (23:24:59): mixindown... just listening to the very end of the track - it sounds like the last bass note gets cut off.
mixindown (23:25:2 : ? It's ok this end.
mpfcoh (23:25:37): gotta go, nice talking to you folks. Look forward to starting the course. G'night
mrbisto (23:25:43): see you.
mixindown (23:25:57): see yah mpfcoh.
jaminuk (23:25:5 : cheers
mpfcoh (23:26:11): cheers
topdog_bossfan (23:26:12): anyone else hear it?
(23:26:13): x016178 has joined the conference.
(23:26:1 : mpfcoh has left the conference.
mrbisto (23:26:36): yes, though I think he may have played it that way..
topdog_bossfan (23:26:50): I think so
x016178 (23:26:55): Nice clean sound mixindown. I like the slight reverb you have on the vocals. The drums are indeed nicer.
topdog_bossfan (23:26:59): there is some other audio information after it cuts off
topdog_bossfan (23:27:10): cymbal ringing or something
mixindown (23:27:47): If you find anything on the end you can have it, Its free of charge.
mrbisto (23:28:09): lol
jaminuk (23:28:10): ha
mrbisto (23:28:25): you guys hehe
mixindown (23:28:3 : gotta laugh ey. lol
mrbisto (23:29:31): anyone else ready to go?
mrbisto (23:29:35): mixed up?
mrbisto (23:30:06): please just one at a time..
mrbisto (23:30:12): hehe
jaminuk (23:30:17): stampede!!!!
x016178 (23:30:21): we can do mine.
mrbisto (23:30:25): ok brent
x016178 (23:30:27): its old school
mrbisto (23:30:2 : good man
x016178 (23:30:43): jut a sec
x016178 (23:31:01): ftp://ftp.audiocourses.com/x016178/lesson4 BDB.mp3
mrbisto (23:31:03): what's the title so i can paste for all?
mrbisto (23:31:20): http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/upload/x016178/lesson4%20BDB.mp3
mrbisto (23:31:24): there we go
jaminuk (23:31:39): chorus on the rhodes?
mrbisto (23:31:56): ohh panning going on there with BVs
x016178 (23:32:04): no, but a slight flange. I moved the track of one of them a hair to the right.
mrbisto (23:32:12): that would do it.
jaminuk (23:32:17): right - can hear that
mrbisto (23:32:39): although the same performance would not create the flange.. but a thickening.
mrbisto (23:32:46): what you mix this on Brent?
x016178 (23:32:59): cubase sx
mrbisto (23:33:23): ok you got aomse serious MP3 compression going on huh..
mrbisto (23:33:29): it's just 1meg..
jaminuk (23:33:32): it'd be nice to hear this on 128kbps MP3
jaminuk (23:33:35): ha
mrbisto (23:33:36): yup
x016178 (23:33:47): Oops. Yeah. I can correct that!
x016178 (23:34:0 : I got in the job of silencing everything.
mrbisto (23:34:09): Brent doesn't do it justice currently
mrbisto (23:34:16): bloody MP3s!
jaminuk (23:34:22): grrrrr
x016178 (23:34:4 : I didn't notice the noise so much , humming when everything was mixed.
mixindown (23:35:04): bongos on the chorus / bridge sound great.
mrbisto (23:35:0 : sure
x016178 (23:35:16): So I silenced -processed the parts where it was down.
mrbisto (23:35:17): let's get this straight CONGAS
mrbisto (23:35:19): lol
jaminuk (23:35:25): ha
x016178 (23:35:2 :
mixindown (23:35:31): oops, bigger ones.
mrbisto (23:35:32): bongos are the things people play at festivals!
x016178 (23:35:43): I wish I had more time on this. I think a mixing job is never complete. it is just abandoned.
jaminuk (23:35:4 : lol
mrbisto (23:36:05): Brent, yeah it's good to strive for perfection, but oftne not very attainable.
jaminuk (23:36:27): the more you do it the quicker you get
jaminuk (23:36:34): you get to learn freqs by ear#
jaminuk (23:36:41): compression settings etc
mrbisto (23:36:47): That's a good point.. you get "tooled-up" to mix..
jaminuk (23:36:55): mixing is like a muscle you need to exercise
x016178 (23:36:59): I thought about going through the effort of removing all the spills but ran out of time. My question is, would it have added much?
mrbisto (23:37:00): And used to styles..
mrbisto (23:37:19): Brent what do you think, do you think it would?
jaminuk (23:37:22): would what have added much - cutting out spill?
x016178 (23:37:54): yeah? Is it necesary for mixing if I can try to take it out with eq?
mrbisto (23:38:03): Brent,
mrbisto (23:38:16): for me mixing is about getting the musical emotion across...
jaminuk (23:38:22): this is a creative as much as technical decision
jaminuk (23:38:3 : compare drum sounds on say 70s rock with 80s rock
jaminuk (23:39:05): you will hear a difference that is often down to either excessive gating etc (80s) or lots of spill (70s)
x016178 (23:39:23): So if my market wanted 80s music, I would remove the spill generally speaking.
jaminuk (23:39:27): compare Led Zeppelin drum sounds on early albums with (for instance) phil collins
jaminuk (23:39:35): broadly speaking yes
x016178 (23:39:42): cool.
jaminuk (23:39:49): stuff like guns'n'roses is heavily gated, compressed, reverb etc
jaminuk (23:39:54): very clinical sounding
mrbisto (23:39:5 : There are definately "ways of mixing" for different styles Brent.
jaminuk (23:40:13): stuff like zeppelin and sabbath are more 'open' - you can hear the room!
mrbisto (23:40:24): R&B has the groove, with delayed tracks to give swing, and not much instrumentation or comrpession...
mrbisto (23:40:42): Punk has a "Wall" of guitars...almost as loud as vocals..
mrbisto (23:41:26): It's a useful thing to start to anaylise what constitutes these styles..
jaminuk (23:41:33): definitely
mrbisto (23:41:44): Dance has a climatic approach with build-ups...
mrbisto (23:41:46): you know?
x016178 (23:42:15): a very clean sound that builds louder -- is that done with mixing?
x016178 (23:42:36): Sorry that's a general question.
mrbisto (23:42:36): Differing techniques for differing styles, mixing has become fairly "product" oriented these days..
mrbisto (23:43:1 : A country band has a country sound a country mix, people are used to that and would be dissapointed if didn't exist... consumers I mean .
mrbisto (23:44:05): You wouldn't has long sustained guitar chords in a rap/hip hop tune (generally)
mrbisto (23:44:51): Tis these things we need to learn.. to listen for. (to become a rounded mix engineer/producer)
mrbisto (23:44:59): anyone else have a mix?
quinnersboy (23:45:27): shot me
mrbisto (23:45:46): http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/upload/Quinnersboy/Quinnersboy%20wk%205.mp3
mrbisto (23:46:07): off we go
quinnersboy (23:46:15): eerrooo
mrbisto (23:47:21): not bad quinners..
mrbisto (23:47:32): Groove is not quite working for me mind you..
mrbisto (23:47:4 : Sounds cluttered..
jaminuk (23:48:01): also sounds like some clipping at a few points
jaminuk (23:48:05): very 'hot' mix
mrbisto (23:48:14): yeah some low end stuff going on..
quinnersboy (23:48:25): yeah just a smig
mrbisto (23:48:32): What you mixing on quinners?
quinnersboy (23:48:41): tracktion
mrbisto (23:48:49): ah, silly question.. lol
mrbisto (23:48:55): you mentioned it previously
quinnersboy (23:49:00): i would have
mrbisto (23:49:16): How did you find the task then?
mrbisto (23:49:22): Enjoyable?
mrbisto (23:49:27): Tricky?
quinnersboy (23:49:43): aye it was alright didnt have much time with it was very busy wit other work
quinnersboy (23:49:52): was tricky enough
quinnersboy (23:50:24): at last it's finished
mixindown (23:50:24): did you use any eq on any of the tracks?
quinnersboy (23:50:35): yip i did
mrbisto (23:50:35): Ok, I think you could do with looking at the instrumentation in terms of "pockets of sound".
mrbisto (23:51:27): Each sound has it's dominant area...
mrbisto (23:51:44): and the idea is to ensure that nothing cramps the style of its neighbour too much..
mrbisto (23:51:57): With this style, the groove and vocal is essential..
mrbisto (23:52:09): needs to breath...
quinnersboy (23:52:2 : so less low end and clearly define the instruments more?
mrbisto (23:52:36): Do you understnd what I mean.. needs more "openness"
mrbisto (23:52:50): whereas dance would not need openness..
quinnersboy (23:52:59): i understand what your saying alright
mrbisto (23:53:03): use your EQ effective to CUT
mrbisto (23:53:49): for exmaple you'd want to remove a great deal of the other instrumentation around the vocal frequencies
mrbisto (23:53:59): To allow them space in the mix.
mrbisto (23:54:27): Wel done mind you, tis a tough old assignment.
mrbisto (23:54:50): How did you build this mix, what did you start with?
rv_1210 (23:54:53): i'm off. cya next week people
mrbisto (23:54:59): ok rico, see you soon.
jaminuk (23:55:02): cheers
quinnersboy (23:55:06): i started with the drums
(23:55:07): rv_1210 has left the conference.
quinnersboy (23:55:17): spent the guts of 2 hours on them
mrbisto (23:55:26): yeh?
quinnersboy (23:55:54): aye getting rid of the noise between the toms and so forth
quinnersboy (23:56:17): then moved to bass and electri
mrbisto (23:56:25): Sure.. you know you might want to have another go starting with the vocals.. it's good practise..
mrbisto (23:56:41): just to see if you can work around it in a different manner..
mrbisto (23:57:15): time is against us here... have to crack on.. anyone else have one ready to go?
quinnersboy (23:57:30): right i is away
quinnersboy (23:57:36): good luck to ya's
mrbisto (23:57:40): cheers
jaminuk (23:57:44): cheers
mixindown (23:57:45): well done quinners.
mrbisto (23:58:20): instinct?
quinnersboy (23:58:22): well it's like everything else the more time you spend at it the more ya learn
mrbisto (23:58:37): that's true, well done.. looking forward to more!
hoaxwagon (23:59:00): its been great y'all, gotta go, peace out
jaminuk (23:59:06): cheers
mrbisto (23:59:07): ok see ya
(23:59:12): hoaxwagon has left the conference.
mixindown (23:59:19): see ya.
(23:59:21): quinnersboy has left the conference.
topdog_bossfan (23:59:40): good luck all - thanks for letting me sit in
topdog_bossfan (23:59:49): greatly enjoyed it
mrbisto (23:59:50): Topdog, will be in touch..
jaminuk (23:59:53): no worries
topdog_bossfan (23:59:54): Right!
mixindown (23:59:57): see yah topdog.
