Quickie  Reply with quote

Hmm

OK this is a really quick tip for ya.

Best not to get tied down with specific equipment and models etc. Personally I have avoided becoming an expert on one piece of equipment. I would sincerely suggest you understand a typical system configuration and then apply that to your current equipmnet. If you adopt that approach you should be able to tackle most equpiment you come across.

With this in mind the recording chain is simple.

Microphone goes to mic input on desk
Signals come from direct output on desk to multitrack input
Multitrack output (recorded sounds) come back into desk usually through a monitor section, sometimes known as tape returns or tape inputs.

Recording and mixing are two distinctly separate activities. While recording you use your channel faders to send the signal to be recorded.

When mixing you use your channels faders to "mix" or "balance" the sounds.

As I said, just a quickie to help you think about a couple of things. Get back with more info and we can help further.

multitrack mixing consoles  Reply with quote

While we're on the topic of multitrack mixing consoles, maybe someone can help me search for something. I'm a student in audio engineering and our console in our main studio is a DDA DMR12. I've been online searching for a downloadable manual for this console to keep as reference when i'm working on projects.

But it seems that DDA is no longer around or at least very hard to contact, and have had no luck finding anything. does anyone have ideas or know a good online DDA resource? I found another DDA manual for a similar board that may work but I'm still keeping my eye out.

Thanks.

Me too! Anybody know where I can get a quick start guide for the VSR-880? I need to record about 4 live tracks from a Mackie mixer.

The EURORACK MX2004A is a 20-Channel 2 + 2-Bus Mixing Console:

This is a basic entry level desk, which is perfect if you are a beginner as you will be able to learn the art of signal paths very well. This desk is not however a multi-track recording desk, because there is no way to have multiple outputs going into any type of multi track recorder. This desk will supply a stereo out feed. You can have two stereo mixes though by using the ALT output, so you could effectively record 4 tracks at once.

Taking this info you can record a mic or instrument on each of the individual channels and mix them live, while plugging the recorder into the 2 track outputs, that's what they are for, to record a stereo mix.

Here is the manual which does actually contain set-up diagrams:

EURORACK MX2004A Manual

To cut a long story short if you want to record 8 channels at once on the Roland VSR880, you need a desk which outputs 8 different signals at once. Typically a desk of this nature will have 8 groups, or a direct out on each channel.

There is a "cheat" which involves stealing a signal from the insert points of the desk, but you won't benefit from gain structures or other channels features in doing that.

Let me know if any of that makes sense.

I have a copy of the TurboStart from Roland in pdf format, if you need it. I also have a copy of the Owner's Manual in pdf format.
