chemirastudio (22:30:54): Kool fer me piano sucked
jaminuk (22:31:20): piano is very tricky with analogue synthesis to recreate faithfully - at least in terms of timbre
hoaxwagon (22:31:34): you got it boss
mixindown (22:31:50): brb
jaminuk (22:32:01): anyway
jaminuk (22:32:04): what i hoped we could do

skip_491 (22:34:39): hey ben by the way i orderd that fireface
mrbisto (22:34:44): all that creation of sounds, tuning the ears to create the corretc tonality will help the RT practical.
skip_491 (22:34:47): will be here tuesday let ya kow how it flys
jaminuk (22:35:04): skip - when it arrives i want an appraisial!
jaminuk (22:35:07):
skip_491 (22:35:29): you got it
mrbisto (22:35:51): I'd like you all to understand this weeks 2nd practical..
mrbisto (22:36:10): which is a Sound Effects Story
chemirastudio (22:36:2Cool: Foley?
mrbisto (22:36:33): Invent a short story that can be told using sound effects only, using sound effects from any other effects library. Assemble a sound effects sequence using one effect at a time, editing the sequence tightly together with few, or no gaps. The sound effects should be the sounds that happen in the story, not sounds that give an 'impression' of the story. The duration of the story should be between 90 seconds and three minutes.
mrbisto (22:36:41): chem you got the idea
chemirastudio (22:36:50): Wohoo
chemirastudio (22:36:53): ZZZZZZ
chemirastudio (22:37:01): Sorry I love Foley

mrbisto (22:37:56): ahh cool..
mrbisto (22:38:00): yes it is
chemirastudio (22:38:12): Look at what is happening and try and figure a way to better represent the sounds
mrbisto (22:38:20): yes..
acousticalweaponsdivision (22:38:29): hmm well i'm not doing RT but I'll have a go anyway
mrbisto (22:38:31): This however, has no visuals..
chemirastudio (22:38:39): weird things sound right
x016178 (22:39:03): This is without narrative or dialog?
acousticalweaponsdivision (22:39:03): as it sounds like fun

mixindown (22:39:1Cool: back

mrbisto (22:39:40): oops
mrbisto (22:39:43): fast!
skip_491 (22:39:43): is this more like someone walkin up a path and there footsteps or would it be like rain by someone playin a high hat?
mrbisto (22:39:44): hehe
mixindown (22:40:10): Um, tell a story in sound.
mixindown (22:40:17): Yeah?
x016178 (22:40:2Cool: Ok.
mrbisto (22:40:29): this is someone jumping out of a high speed car to chase the andriod and save the world.
freshwayne2002 (22:40:31): Could be tricky!
chemirastudio (22:40:36): I'm trying not to picture what I should see but what I hear to create the picture of what I see

acousticalweaponsdivision (22:41:10): done something like this before
chemirastudio (22:41:17): I was thinking of flowers blooming or something
mrbisto (22:41:22): I don;t wish to know your story I wish to understand your story by using my ears
mrbisto (22:41:46): you know?
reynola31 (22:42:04): yep, understood
mrbisto (22:42:1Cool: Dan Brown wrote the DA Vinci Code.. (current best seller I think)

jaminuk (22:46:07): ha
chemirastudio (22:46:13): Fast, little Low Fast
mrbisto (22:46:14): The story starts immediately with no pause after pressing the play button. The recording finishes within 10 s at the end of the story. There is a smooth fade out of background noise at the end.
skip_491 (22:46:15): rlof mix
mrbisto (22:46:30): There are no technical faults: excess noise, clipping, distortion etc.
mrbisto (22:46:46): Artistically, the standard of the story is high with good assessment of relative levels.
skip_491 (22:46:51): you want it very nice
mrbisto (22:47:13): I want it broadcastable.. I don't understand "nice"

chemirastudio (22:48:10): Sound effects
mrbisto (22:48:36): I don't mind where you obtain your sounds from, that's your business - but of course you'll need a good pool of them yes.
chemirastudio (22:48:45): OK
mrbisto (22:49:27): I have to say this is a good practical, really gets your ears tuned in...
chemirastudio (22:49:43): Final mix will be MP3 128bit

mrbisto (22:50:12): what you think Ben?
chemirastudio (22:50:12): help
jaminuk (22:50:27): i would say that 192kbps is preferable
jaminuk (22:50:30): joint stereo
mrbisto (22:50:50): There we go guys..
freshwayne2002 (22:51:24): Thats a toughy!
skip_491 (22:51:25): what bout when u lose half ur channels when u go to 192?

mrbisto (22:52:00): lol sorry Skip
jaminuk (22:52:1Cool: as i said the other week, winLAME is a great MP3 encoder

jaminuk (22:52:32): winlame.sourceforge.net
chemirastudio (22:52:39): thank you

mixindown (22:52:47): great.
jaminuk (22:53:00): oh i see - no for MP3 encoding it won't make any difference
jaminuk (22:53:12): you only change the stereo .wav file
jaminuk (22:53:30): you don't use any physical outputs for encoding
skip_491 (22:53:34): ok
jaminuk (22:53:47): you're thinking of higher sampling freqs and bit depths with ADAT
skip_491 (22:53:55): yes
jaminuk (22:54:0Cool: MP3 encoding is completely software/algorithim based
jaminuk (22:54:20): sorry for the spelling of algo$£%£$^£&m
x016178 (22:54:40): this looks like a nice search engine for free sounds http://www.findsounds.com/ISAPI/search.dll
skip_491 (22:54:43): ok
x016178 (22:56:04): you can do lama farting here.
jaminuk (22:56:10): creating your own sounds is fun also - for instance i've read that one foley artist acheives the sound of someone being punched by slapping some kind of meat onto a tabletop
jaminuk (22:56:20): no innuendo intended by the way
freshwayne2002 (22:56:21): Ah yes but is it an authentic Nepalese Llama?
jaminuk (22:56:24):
chemirastudio (22:56:42): Deep thought
skip_491 (22:56:46): lol
x016178 (22:57:11):
mrbisto (22:57:1Cool: Meat slapping is a good option..
topdog_bossfan (22:57:2Cool: Cheque please...!
jaminuk (22:57:32):
mrbisto (22:57:39): And that's good advice from ben..
mrbisto (22:57:41): hehe
skip_491 (22:57:51): hahahaha
mrbisto (22:58:26): Is every one clear on the TWO practicals?
mrbisto (22:58:33): or shout if not..
acousticalweaponsdivision (22:58:51): yes
hoaxwagon (22:58:55): yes
reynola31 (22:58:59): yep
mixindown (22:59:04): RT story in sound, MT synth sounds.
skip_491 (22:59:05): considers investing in mutual funds
chemirastudio (22:59:07): OK
skip_491 (22:59:26): <<<wise guy
quinnersboy (22:59:3Cool: yip
mrbisto (22:59:56): Good stuff..
mrbisto (23:00:47): So we've covered a lot of good things there....
mrbisto (23:00:50): onto the questions...
mrbisto (23:01:13): Has anybody found there to be any "difficult" un solved puzzles among them this week?
mrbisto (23:01:22): IF SO RAISE YOUR HAND
mrbisto (23:01:39): ducks out of the way
chemirastudio (23:01:40): Still need time almost done though
freshwayne2002 (23:01:54): Hand raised! Almost simultaneous tape recording????
skip_491 (23:02:09): washes and folds the laundry
mrbisto (23:02:19): What is the full contaxt fresh?
mrbisto (23:02:23): RT?
freshwayne2002 (23:02:31): 22. Describe in what conditions a DAT recorder may be capable of near-simultaneous off-tape recording?
hoaxwagon (23:02:44): beat me to it fresh
freshwayne2002 (23:02:51): couldn't find it anywhere!
skip_491 (23:03:24): 9 ms of latency?
mrbisto (23:03:32): hmmm
mixindown (23:03:54): Is it that you can monitor as you record?
mrbisto (23:04:37): yeah kind of - Did you find any useful DAT resources?
skip_491 (23:04:39): yes but you can mix, i have done it here
mixindown (23:05:01): not many
freshwayne2002 (23:05:06): I struggled to find any
mrbisto (23:05:41): Anyone have a crack at this ?
skip_491 (23:06:32): latency low audio qualitity high just to start
mixindown (23:06:3Cool: Do you have to have extra heads on the recorded/playback.
mrbisto (23:06:5Cool: "near-simultaneous" mean swhat?
mixindown (23:07:10): Almost the same.
mixindown (23:07:15): time.
mrbisto (23:07:15): indeed..
skip_491 (23:07:17): move atsame time
mrbisto (23:07:31): in the analogue tape world how is this achieved?
mrbisto (23:07:55): anyone know?
mixindown (23:07:59): Three heads on an analogue tape recorder?
skip_491 (23:08:00): <<opps dont kow i'm all digital
mrbisto (23:08:23): yes.. there addiitonal ehads in use, to send the signal ou for monitoring purposes.. right?
skip_491 (23:08:40): right
mixindown (23:08:41): ok
mrbisto (23:08:50): soit;s the same concept in DAT
mrbisto (23:08:51): but
mrbisto (23:09:1Cool: does anyone know how DAT heads work? - does the tape flow passed the heads in the same way as analoge tape?
chemirastudio (23:09:35): Like a VCR right on an angle
skip_491 (23:09:3Cool: no but i kow its not the same
hoaxwagon (23:10:0Cool: not linear
chemirastudio (23:10:13): flat pan I'm out
skip_491 (23:10:14): analoge tape is magnetic
mixindown (23:10:15): the tape wraps quarter way around the head?
mrbisto (23:10:52): Basically someone mention it correctly, you have additional read ability incorporated into the head..
mixindown (23:11:32): was that me.,.,um...lol
skip_491 (23:12:27): one head will let you monitor and record at the same time?
mrbisto (23:13:07): Let me offer this to you: http://audiotools.com/dat.html
mrbisto (23:13:25): And now I'm searching for how the DAT heads are constructed then you will picture it clearly.
topdog_bossfan (23:14:35): Here's a good one: http://arts.ucsc.edu/ems/music/equipment/digital_recorders/Digital_Recorders.html
mrbisto (23:14:51): ahhh lovely
mrbisto (23:14:55): thanks eric
jaminuk (23:15:04): i noticed a few people struggled with 'tracking' in the sampling questions - would you like me to briefly go over this?
hoaxwagon (23:15:21): please
chemirastudio (23:15:23): Yes please
skip_491 (23:15:36): yah
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:15:43): yes, i'm not sure my answer was correct
topdog_bossfan (23:15:50): no problemo
jaminuk (23:15:50): ok, there are 2 important parts to this answer to get full marks from the examiner
skip_491 (23:15:52): thanks top good site
mrbisto (23:16:12): Yes thats site will explain it all..
jaminuk (23:16:35): we can broadly break tracking down into 2 categories - pitch and filter
jaminuk (23:16:59): lets say you load a note of a piano playing middle C into your sampler
freshwayne2002 (23:17:23): xcellent! thanks
jaminuk (23:17:3Cool: 'pitch tracking' means that if for instance you hit D, the sample will be 'transposed' to D
jaminuk (23:17:55): without pitch tracking all keys on the keyboard would play the sample at the original pitch
jaminuk (23:18:02): is that clear
jaminuk (23:18:04): ?
mixindown (23:18:07): yes.
skip_491 (23:18:09): yes
hoaxwagon (23:18:10): yep
jaminuk (23:18:21): ok,regarding filters...
reynola31 (23:18:23): yep
jaminuk (23:18:36): when you set your filter parameters
jaminuk (23:18:46): they are (without tracking) 'static'
skip_491 (23:18:53): and when shift speed is adjustable is should be between 15 and 30 so that it sounds natural
jaminuk (23:19:1Cool: so if for instance you set the cutoff at quite a low value
jaminuk (23:19:3Cool: there is a risk that when you play higher notes the sound will 'disappear' as they will be higher in pitch
jaminuk (23:19:4Cool: and therefore more at risk of being attenuated by the filter
jaminuk (23:20:05): so, if you apply filter tracking
skip_491 (23:20:06): very true
jaminuk (23:20:14): the cutoff is no longer static
jaminuk (23:20:30): the cutoff will 'move' depending on the note that you strike
jaminuk (23:20:49): more often than not the cutoff freq will increase as you hit higher notes
jaminuk (23:21:22): however you can on some samplers invert the tracking so the cutoff decreases
jaminuk (23:21:3Cool: often the tracking is expressed as a percentage
jaminuk (23:21:55): so 100% will be a linear increase in cutoff with pitch
mrbisto (23:22:12): The same can be said for "tracking" in the analogue world right ben? For example in subtractive synthesis?
jaminuk (23:22:17): 15-30%, as skip mentioned, would be a more gradual
jaminuk (23:22:3Cool: yes chris, many synths, not just subtractive, have tracking controls
jaminuk (23:23:00): so in summary
jaminuk (23:23:1Cool: to ensure full marks
jaminuk (23:23:29): pitch and filter tracking should be mentioned in the answer
jaminuk (23:23:4Cool: if you search on google there are a lot of resources
jaminuk (23:23:50): however...
jaminuk (23:24:04): you may find that searching for tracking alone will not yield many results
jaminuk (23:24:14): so try to search for "keyboard tracking"
jaminuk (23:24:32): this should reveal many sites and resources for both synthesis and sampling
hoaxwagon (23:25:04): thank you Ben
jaminuk (23:25:1Cool: no probs
skip_491 (23:25:20): yep thanks that was informative
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:25:23): yes, thanks for that
skip_491 (23:25:2Cool: i love using tracking
mixindown (23:25:35): great
mrbisto (23:25:43): Tell us more Skip...
hoaxwagon (23:25:5Cool: lol
skip_491 (23:26:01): lol
jaminuk (23:26:05): you've done it now skip....
jaminuk (23:26:07):
skip_491 (23:26:16):
skip_491 (23:26:34): most probly dont use tracking but i use it alot here
skip_491 (23:26:54): and i found that 100% attack is the only way to go
skip_491 (23:27:23): i then use the pitch tracking and the filter tracking against each other untill i get the sound i want
skip_491 (23:27:51): i also like to add resounace to this signal
jaminuk (23:27:59): do you tend to set your filter tracking levels at a middle-ish note
jaminuk (23:28:09): and then adjust depending on the timbre of higher notes?
skip_491 (23:28:15): yes and then adjust by ear
skip_491 (23:28:21): but there must be a better way
jaminuk (23:28:34): this is a very common way of working
skip_491 (23:28:41): i think a guitar tuner might help me
jaminuk (23:28:59): its usually best to set filter values for notes in the region that most of the playing takes place in
skip_491 (23:29:02): i do have a meter that shows what note i'm playing and what note i'm sliding too
jaminuk (23:29:05): and then fine tune notes in the extremeties
skip_491 (23:29:27): yes and i use compression
jaminuk (23:29:31): btw - great software intrument tuner - http://www.jhc-software.com/gtune.htm
skip_491 (23:29:3Cool: thanks to chris >>heehe
jaminuk (23:29:43): extremely accurate
skip_491 (23:29:52): ty been lookin for one
skip_491 (23:31:05): i also daisy chain to of these machines together so i can take some on one and some on the other
jaminuk (23:31:24): what machines skip?
skip_491 (23:31:26): so that the signal is not so changed dramatically all at once seems to work better
skip_491 (23:31:40): voice one and voice prism by tc helicon
jaminuk (23:31:51): cool
skip_491 (23:32:01):
skip_491 (23:32:16): real time is still a prbl
skip_491 (23:32:25): but recording works pretty well
jaminuk (23:32:43): can i quickly say that Digidesign have released a version of Pro Tools that runs on M-Audio cards!
jaminuk (23:33:02): as you can pick up s/h audiophiles for very cheap
skip_491 (23:33:13): is that like the digi 002?
jaminuk (23:33:22): this is an alternative way of getting into using the 'industry standard'
chemirastudio (23:33:32): leaving for a sec
(23:33:33): chemirastudio has left the conference.
(23:33:39): chemirastudio has joined the conference.
mixindown (23:33:40): Mpower?
jaminuk (23:33:49): http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/ProToolsMPowered-main.html
skip_491 (23:33:50): hi chem
jaminuk (23:33:52): yes mixin
mixindown (23:34:05): When is this out?
chemirastudio (23:34:06): hello
jaminuk (23:34:13): i think it was released this week
jaminuk (23:34:22): or very recently at least
jaminuk (23:34:33): one thing that is interesting though
mixindown (23:34:34): I was thinking of going Pro Tools.
skip_491 (23:34:42): yah sweetwater was pushing that card here
mixindown (23:34:45): you have to have the hardware.
jaminuk (23:34:59): some people have had success in running this M-Powered PT with the Digidesign 1010
jaminuk (23:35:04): which is a 10i/o card
jaminuk (23:35:15): you can get these for around £200 s/h
mixindown (23:35:15): M Audio card 192 works.
jaminuk (23:35:3Cool: the 1010 isn't officially supported
skip_491 (23:35:54): ut oh gonna be like mlan
jaminuk (23:35:56): but some people have been loading audiophile drivers for the 1010
skip_491 (23:36:17): cuz they cant get it to work lol jk
jaminuk (23:36:23): so you could (unofficially) have a 10i/o PT system for around £500
jaminuk (23:36:4Cool: if you got the 1010lt this figure decreases even more!
mixindown (23:36:55): Is the Mpowered software diff from PT LE 6.7?
jaminuk (23:37:06): it is essentially PT LE 6.8 i think
mixindown (23:37:19): I hope thats more than 6.7
skip_491 (23:37:33): rlof @ mix
jaminuk (23:37:43): i think its pretty much the same, the extra number is probably due to differences made to allow it to run on M-Audio
mixindown (23:38:0Cool: And there is an iLok involved.
jaminuk (23:38:14): yes iLok
skip_491 (23:38:2Cool: i heard iLok was good
mixindown (23:38:43): Yeah, £40-50 good skip. lol
skip_491 (23:38:44): no need for clock
jaminuk (23:39:14): http://www.digidesign.com/products/le/
mixindown (23:39:49): I was on the phone to a few music stores here in the uk this week, no one had it though.
mixindown (23:39:56): any day now!
mixindown (23:40:16): It's all pre-order.
jaminuk (23:40:21): is an interesting move for digidesign
skip_491 (23:40:23): kool mix
jaminuk (23:40:3Cool: although part of it is due to avid buying m-audio
skip_491 (23:40:41): people cant afford everything
jaminuk (23:40:42): so it's all the same company
mixindown (23:41:09): Mbox will probably die a death now.
skip_491 (23:41:22): hahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
jaminuk (23:41:26): whether we'll eventually see a Pro Tools that runs on any WDM soundcard remains to be seen
skip_491 (23:41:46): good point thats why i'm gettin rid of mine
mixindown (23:41:51): Do they have their own ASIO drivers for Pro Tools?
mrbisto (23:41:52): If only they could hear you ben ...
jaminuk (23:42:02):
jaminuk (23:42:31): mixindown - who? m-audio?
mixindown (23:42:37): Yes.
jaminuk (23:43:3Cool: i can't confirm this though as i dont own PT M-P or M-Audio card!
mrbisto (23:44:39): brb
jaminuk (23:44:5Cool: anyone here got an m-audio card?
chemirastudio (23:45:19): Delta 66
jaminuk (23:45:49): apparently the delta range will work if audiophile drivers are loaded(?)
hoaxwagon (23:45:49): layla
jaminuk (23:46:02): hoax - echo! nice!
mixindown (23:46:22): EMu 1212m
(23:46:25): freshwayne2002 has left the conference.
(23:47:13): freshwayne2002 has joined the conference.
skip_491 (23:47:27): wb fresh
freshwayne2002 (23:47:40): Cheers!
jaminuk (23:47:54): on a less technical note - any of you guys heard of 'mcrorie'?
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:48:13): cant say I have
chemirastudio (23:48:15): no
skip_491 (23:48:16): hmm no
reynola31 (23:48:20): no
freshwayne2002 (23:48:21): Nope
hoaxwagon (23:48:21): no
mixindown (23:48:31): one man live....no
skip_491 (23:48:41): wow ben thats a strike out
jaminuk (23:48:44): bascially he's like a 21st century one man band
jaminuk (23:48:49): using MIDI controllers
jaminuk (23:48:56): 2 keyboards (like guitars)
jaminuk (23:49:01): MIDI triggers on shoes
mrbisto (23:49:04): Oh I saw that guy on a web cast a while back..
jaminuk (23:49:09): MIDI triggers on chest
jaminuk (23:49:19): absolutely incredible, not to mention hilarious
jaminuk (23:49:24): http://mcrorie.net/
mrbisto (23:49:35): That's the felllol
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:49:36): haha cool
(23:49:59): mpfcoh has left the conference.
chemirastudio (23:50:0Cool: too much free time
skip_491 (23:50:09): got him playin now
mrbisto (23:50:12): lol
mixindown (23:50:15): Sometimes, its hard to put a band together...
freshwayne2002 (23:50:16): What ever happened to the one man auto beat 'Rock 'n' roll' style that did for every song by changing the tempo?
mrbisto (23:50:19): lol
skip_491 (23:50:27): lol
chemirastudio (23:50:35): fashionably unique
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:50:44): didnt kraftwerk have a similar idea?
jaminuk (23:51:20): i think they may have been more tasteful?......
quinnersboy (23:51:50): right ohh i has to go now
quinnersboy (23:51:56): c yas all
jaminuk (23:52:00): cheers
skip_491 (23:52:02): see ya quinner
mixindown (23:52:03): I gotta write that guy some good tunes...He could do with em...
chemirastudio (23:52:03): WOW I can't compete with that
skip_491 (23:52:16): lol
mrbisto (23:52:22): I know Mick Fleetwood used to do a drum solo in his chest too.. with MIDI trigegrs..
(23:52:26): quinnersboy has left the conference.
jaminuk (23:52:33): i like when he has tom rolls he beats his chest like tarzan!
freshwayne2002 (23:52:44): Ok, so is everyone looking forward to my 'Larry the Llama and the nuclear physicist' sound effect story?
jaminuk (23:52:4Cool: and his funny little walk to keep the kick hats and snare in time
mrbisto (23:52:55): that's priceless yeah
mrbisto (23:53:0Cool: Fit as a butchers dog
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:53:26): hahaha words fail me about this guy
skip_491 (23:53:26): sure fresh lol
mrbisto (23:53:52): Wel people we should start to wind this down for the week..
chemirastudio (23:53:57): Free speech I guess very artistic
mixindown (23:53:59): Hey acoustic, someone was gonna do it.

freshwayne2002 (23:54:14): cheers all! see you next week! Tis good to be back!
mrbisto (23:54:17): any areas need clearing up?..
jaminuk (23:54:19): cheers fresh

(23:55:31): mixindown has left the conference.
topdog_bossfan (23:55:39): Here's my mugshot....http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/au/2144
mrbisto (23:55:40): hehe good luck with the weeks people.
topdog_bossfan (23:55:45): best of luck folks

freshwayne2002 (23:55:46): chow!
skip_491 (23:55:47): yah fresh go for it u got 90 sec
acousticalweaponsdivision (23:55:50): right, time to go
reynola31 (23:55:51): bye all... see u

acousticalweaponsdivision (23:55:55): bye everyone
chemirastudio (23:55:56): Gotta Go
(23:56:02): freshwayne2002 has left the conference.
topdog_bossfan (23:56:03): Thanks again Chris
skip_491 (23:56:04): nite every;one

(23:56:09): chemirastudio has left the conference.
(23:56:12): reynola31 has left the conference.
