Hello,
Actually the reason I started reading about radio on the net is because I plan to set up one for a short while. The band I'm in, we aren't gonna be playing together after a month...so I was planning to have an online acoustic concert (keyboards, acoustic guitar, vocals) which I could broadcast to our fans. I as thinking of doing this live. I'm still looking at the options.
The first I came across was broadcasting through .nsv format (through prgrams like winamp). This is done through the SHOUTcast server (check out the documents on www.shoutcast.com). This is the procedure : first you need to download a plugin for winamp which connects winamp (or Audion for mac) to the shoutcast server (its called DNAS). Now your pc acts like the primary server from which you "broadcast".
Then i came across this Unreal Media Server......but I couldnt get it to work. Still reading and experimenting with it.
I also came across this software called "Pirate Radio Broadcaster". Its free and its simple to use. It can be used to broadcast through a webpage (even an email) and also through a player. I tried broadcastin with it but I had some IP address errors which I need to fix. Also I'm still reading about the coding for the applet for the webpage broadcast. But Pirate Broadcater seems really simple to use.
I'm still in the process of reading. In a days time I should know what is easy to use and works!
I'll let you know on what I find.
Will keep you 'posted'.
P.S - If you are ready to spend cash, theres a real 'easy to use' software. I think its called Live365. But whatever software you have, you need a decent internet connection. |

Not to mention plenty of bandwidth, assuming there is a large audience.
I can't imagine a residential connection would do the job, I figure you'd have to route it through some kind of third party server (or your own) in order to accomodate a suitable amount of simultaneous connections.
Looking forward to seeing how his works out for you. _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

from what i'v read with a 128kbps telephone line can just hold a maximum of 4-5 listeners. You need a nice optic fibre cable with a large bandwith. |

Yes this is the server I am talking about, have you researched the bandwidth issues and costs? I guess the bandwidth is also going to be depending on the data rate that you will be streaming at? _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

By the way 128 divided by 5 (assuming it works that way) is 25.6 kbps , is that enough?
I guess you need to work out at what rate your software is going to be streaming at.. _________________ It's all in the ears. - Learn the concepts not the software.

I don't think I would need a very large rate of streaming, because mostly I would be using the acoustic and a single vocal track (i dont think we would be using the keyboards). There would be no drums...so I wouldn't have to worry about the lower frequencies getting a muddy sound with a low streaming rate. Anyways, I need to check it out in reality and see the differences in quality with the streaming rate.
I have access to a server with a bandwith of 1000Mb, so I need to try and use it, but it won't be an easy job considering its live.
And I don't expect a lot of people (hehe...hopefully people will turn up if this thing works!). |
