Is Vinyl dead yet?

D.J.s can be seen using laptops these days, playing their MP3s by hitting the play button, right?

CD decks  Reply with quote

I wouldnt say laptops, but you can now buy Cd decks, that let you scratch, brake and cue like vinyl. and it doesnt trash the Cd's.

You can even get Cd decks that are built like a vinyl with a table and arm etc.

So i think in the DJ industry, Vinyl is on its way out.

Not by a long shot. I still use 50-60% vinyl. The are some dance records you just can't get in any other format.

Maybe 2-3 years?

But would you agree its only a matter of time, perhaps by the end of the decade?

Definately, but also by then we will have forgoten about CDs!!

Hey, I'm no Nostradamus but off the top of my head I'm thinking music will be held on small strips of film similar to photographic negatives and DJs will play them using a theramin like instrument. If technologly advances enough then I could even be mixing by mind control?

Or, I could be pissed right now?!? Wink

marketwise, vynil is dead here (phils.). any dj and wannabe djs can get their tracks off a local pirated cd vendor for only 40 pesos (less than a dollar or half pound i guess). CD decks proliferate most clubs here. Their vynil collection dates up to the 70's up to mid 90's. occasionally i still use vynils but i order them from my cousin in london.

It breaks my heart to hear so many people assume that vinyl is on its way out. Any real dj knows you cant get the same type of "scratch" or sound off a cd as you would with a good vinyl. I can see CD's becoming obsolete soon but I dont see vinyl going anywhere for a good while. Even a decade from now I know vinyls will still be getting spun and maybe instead of CD decks it will be audio DVD decks. It all comes down to Analog vs. digital and anyone who mixes and produces music knows the difference. Vinyl is going no where. Well not yet anyways, but of course sadly I must admit that new technology is inevitable. No matter I'll still be spinning Vinyl till the day I'm pushing up daisies and I hope everyone who reads this will too.

Vinyl simulation  Reply with quote

when CD or DVD decks can perfectly simulate the sound of vinyl scratching, do you not think still spinning vinyl would be unneccesary, even pointless?

I guess if CD and DVD decks did actually sound exactly like vinyl scratching than I suppose that would push vinyl out the door, but I seriously doubt that that is gonna happen. I actually have used many different CD decks and scratched with them and they are no where close to the vinyl sound. But if they somehow did perfectly match that sound than it would only cover one part of vinyl that is irreplaceable. Vinyl is a great medium for analog sound and CD's I dont think can ever match that sound. I know I probably seem set in my ways but I do have my preference and who knows people may just go back to analog and forget about the digital revolution but not likely. Just wishful thinking on my part. But of course new technology is inevitable and I gotta accept the future possibilities but I'll still be rockin' the vinyls no matter what happens. Good stuff.
