instinct27651982: just to let u know
paul_ifeanyi: now i wanna ask this question everyone
chemirastudio: Man
chemirastudio: I guess they needed me
paul_ifeanyi: who uses reason 2.5 and cubase sx
paul_ifeanyi: ?
skip_491 has joined the conference.
skip_491: hello
mpfcoh: i use reason 3 & cubase sx
mpfcoh: hi skip
mixindown: Hey skip.
rv_1210: i have reason 2.5 and cubasesx
mpfcoh: used 2.5 for a while
acousticalweaponsdivision: i use reason 2.5
paul_ifeanyi: great
acousticalweaponsdivision: go to save my pennies up for reason 3 i think
paul_ifeanyi: wanna know how to re-wire both aso dat reason can serve as my tone
paul_ifeanyi: lol
paul_ifeanyi: rv_1210
mrbisto: eeek
mpfcoh: paul - want me to talk you through it?
paul_ifeanyi: sure mp
mpfcoh: ok, start up cubase, go to devices > Reason
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mpfcoh: click on the buttons for Mix L & Mix r
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mpfcoh: start up reason
mpfcoh: and now you should be rewired
paul_ifeanyi: just like dat?
mpfcoh: you should see a rewire channel open up in cubase
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mpfcoh: just like that!
mpfcoh: you plan on using the sequencer in reason or in cubase?
paul_ifeanyi: but i did dat,and didnt hear any sound
paul_ifeanyi: cubase
mpfcoh: ok, you have open up a midi channel in cubase
paul_ifeanyi: just wanna use reason as my tone bank
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mpfcoh: map your kb to the input
mpfcoh: map the output to whichever module you are using in reason (e.g. subtractor 1)
paul_ifeanyi: sure on my left on the cubase?
paul_ifeanyi: right?
mpfcoh: yep
paul_ifeanyi: great
mpfcoh: in the inspector for that midi track
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mpfcoh: did it work?
paul_ifeanyi: didnt work
mpfcoh: hmm
paul_ifeanyi: i use sound blaster as my sound card
reynola31: riabmow
reynola31: sorry...lol
paul_ifeanyi: what i always do is to use my tones from my sound card
paul_ifeanyi: which is sound blaster live 5.1
mpfcoh: does it work if you use one of the snths in cubase?
paul_ifeanyi: i just have a small home studio
paul_ifeanyi: at all
paul_ifeanyi: just want to be able to pick my tones from reason
paul_ifeanyi: works for some other ones i have on my system like
paul_ifeanyi: FM 7
paul_ifeanyi: and so on
mpfcoh: anybody else got any ideas?
hoaxwagon: wish i could help
paul_ifeanyi: datz just one of my prb in getting my tones from reason
hoaxwagon: I'm sure your not alone Paul
paul_ifeanyi: how do u mean?
mrbisto: mpfcoh asked if it works for any other sound source, does it?
paul_ifeanyi: sure
paul_ifeanyi: it does chris
hoaxwagon: having problems wiyh computers and audio...
paul_ifeanyi: lol
mpfcoh: yeah, not sure what the problem is there paul
mpfcoh: should work
jaminuk: are you using ASIO drivers within Cubase or DX or MME?
paul_ifeanyi: now mpfcoh
paul_ifeanyi: ASIO
jaminuk: sounds a bit of a mystery
paul_ifeanyi: mee too
paul_ifeanyi: cos i have been trying to get this
paul_ifeanyi: and when i play my kb, its indicate.
jaminuk: is reason showing any MIDI activity when you're playing MIDI?
paul_ifeanyi: sure
paul_ifeanyi: yes
jaminuk: weird
paul_ifeanyi: do u think it might be my sound card?
acousticalweaponsdivision: you selected a device in one of the channel boxes at the top?
paul_ifeanyi: yes.
paul_ifeanyi: the output ?
paul_ifeanyi: right
mpfcoh: in reason, on the reason hardwire interface, under AUDIO OUT, which indicator is lit, rewire or audio card?
paul_ifeanyi: rewire
paul_ifeanyi: and when i play
paul_ifeanyi: it indicate
mpfcoh: in cubase, can you see any activity on the rewire channel?
paul_ifeanyi: yes, there is an activity on any channel assign
paul_ifeanyi: ed
paul_ifeanyi: what about in FL studio?
instinct27651982: use FL Studio with VST in Cubase...
paul_ifeanyi: i dont understand plz
instinct27651982: vst instrument
paul_ifeanyi: ko
paul_ifeanyi: ok
paul_ifeanyi: how do i do that?
instinct27651982: can u choose FL Studio as a vst instrument in Cubase?
paul_ifeanyi: yes
paul_ifeanyi: think so
paul_ifeanyi: but never tried it b4
paul_ifeanyi: Here in nigeria, 99% of engs dont know how to mix and master music
instinct27651982: i have a homie who tried fl studio with rewire.. but it didnt work properly.. i use it as a vst instrument.. works fine, a few bugs, but nothing big
paul_ifeanyi: here
paul_ifeanyi: meaning FL studio as ur tone bank?\
instinct27651982: u can use it for whatever.. that too..
paul_ifeanyi: great
paul_ifeanyi: i will try that
paul_ifeanyi: i do more of R&B sequence
paul_ifeanyi: in my home studio
paul_ifeanyi: and also more of african music
mrbisto: SO guys..
mrbisto: I wanted to say a couple things..
paul_ifeanyi: Ok
mrbisto: The questions are coming along ok it seems, in fcat in many cases very well.
mrbisto: You will now have another week of questions..
mrbisto: There are just some loose ends to tie up..
chemirastudio: ouch
mrbisto: This coming week is the last set of questions for the C&G course
paul_ifeanyi: whatz C&G?
mrbisto: another coure paul, not yours
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mrbisto: then after this week fo questions...
mrbisto: will be a mock exam for each module
mrbisto: the mock exam should be seen as a testing ground for you all.
mrbisto: and not as a major big deal, essentially it is a tool to indicate areas for revision.
mrbisto: but more about that next week, I'd rather talk of it then, so it's fresh
mrbisto: Suffice to say this is your last week of new stuff...
mrbisto: SO hang in there, you are so close now.. the exams will creep up very quickly.
mrbisto: Now I also wanted to say thanks to the bloggers this past week http://www.audiocourses.com/blog
mrbisto: there were some good items all of which are so very helpful..
mrbisto: and as always we find your input into areas like that so useful socially..
mrbisto: The other thing is the presentation for 2005.
mrbisto: did anyone notice that news?
mpfcoh: yep
acousticalweaponsdivision: yes
mrbisto: good
mixindown: yes
mrbisto: this is an opportunity for you all..
mrbisto: we will inlude your stuff and of course marekt each of you up, with full credits.
mrbisto: The presentation or "show reel" will be heavily distributed
instinct27651982: im a little lost here..whats the presentation for 2005?
skip_491: to promote audio courses?
paul_ifeanyi: am lost already
paul_ifeanyi: lol
mrbisto: http://www.audiocourses.com/blog/2005/05/youre-gonna-be-famous.html
mrbisto: skip, it's a promotional tool for AC yes, but more importantly for you.. for students...
chemirastudio: Super star
paul_ifeanyi: chris me?
skip_491: yah its all bout the students
mrbisto: Paul, you are a student, it applies to all.
skip_491: and what great students u have
paul_ifeanyi: great
mrbisto: yes skip..
paul_ifeanyi: ok
mrbisto: everyone reading that blog?
acousticalweaponsdivision: yep
skip_491: i was
mrbisto: so this is a good outlet....
mrbisto: as the presentation will of course include details for contacting you, as a student.
paul_ifeanyi: yes
mrbisto: plus it's a good cv item..
mrbisto: Just grab me during the week if you need clarification on anything.
mrbisto: I think that'smost of the AC NEWS to bring you up to date with..
acousticalweaponsdivision: how long roughly should any tunes for this be or would you use extracts from them?
mrbisto: either..
mrbisto: I mean we might use whole tunes AND/OR extract sections
acousticalweaponsdivision: heh just wondered as mostly everything i write is way over ten minutes
skip_491: theres gonna be an editor right?
mrbisto: skip yes.
skip_491: ok i'm sure he'll be ruthless enuff lol
mrbisto: skip.. we are seeking visuals also...
mrbisto: pictures of studio..
mrbisto: etc..
skip_491: took some this week
skip_491: i can put that on the site too right?
mrbisto: yes skip
mrbisto: OK moving on...
skip_491: ok
mrbisto: Ben... how are the questions so far, considering we have one weeks worth left.. also.. practicals?
jaminuk: questions are good - this week has been quite a difficult one i think
jaminuk: most people have got the answering style down to a tee
jaminuk: which should stand them in good stead for the exams
mrbisto: good
jaminuk: as for practicals - maybe this coming week we could try the parallel compression we mentioned last week?
mrbisto: ohhhh nice..
chemirastudio: Drum buss compression?
chemirastudio: parallel?
jaminuk: remember last weeks workshop
chemirastudio: I was away
jaminuk: we talked about feeding a compressor from an aux
jaminuk: oh ok
jaminuk: there should be a transcript available
chemirastudio: Yep sorry I'll review
jaminuk: no probs - it's an interesting topic
jaminuk: easy to replicate in a host such as cubase too
mrbisto: with some excellent results!
jaminuk: indeed - fatten up drums and vocals - its a trick many pros use
jaminuk: i don't suppose anyone tried it last week after the workshop?
chemirastudio: So send stereo signal to a stereo buss, slam it then nudge ti under the stereo buss of the origioal tracks?
jaminuk: basically, don't compress signal via insert point
chemirastudio: origonal
jaminuk: send copy of signal to aux/group buss
jaminuk: put compressor on this buss rather than the original channel
jaminuk: you then have one uncompressed signal and one compressed signal
jaminuk: blend compressed in with the uncompressed
jaminuk: this is 'parallel compression'
jaminuk: we covered more specific figures for attack, release etc last week
skip_491: ya i tried that last week ben i like it
jaminuk: good man skip - what did you try it on?
skip_491: voice track but wound up mixing a hunderd percent wet anyway
skip_491: but i c the benefit of this
mrbisto: the wet track (copy) is always 100% wet skip
jaminuk: yeah, keeps the transients but adds the punch of compression
skip_491: yah thats how it worked out for me
skip_491: also using high cut
skip_491: was trying to get the low tones
chemirastudio: high cut for noise??
skip_491: no for the voice
chemirastudio: ok
skip_491: too squeeky
jaminuk: ha
skip_491: was usin gate for noise
jaminuk: you tried using a parametric eq and honing in on squeaky freqs with a narrow Q setting?
skip_491: yes but not very successful
skip_491: took out some
jaminuk: i find parametric EQs very useful for acoustic recordings in less than desirable spaces
jaminuk: good for cutting out boxyness, nasalness etc
skip_491: yah i been expermintenting with this
jaminuk: also useful for cutting out things like mains hum
skip_491: or noisy fans
jaminuk: indeed!
skip_491: or the cat on the window seal lol
mrbisto: what's a window seal skip?
jaminuk: ha!
jaminuk: that tricky cat freq!
mixindown: its a seal with glasses
skip_491: there only in special studios lol
skip_491: yes mix lol
mrbisto: hehe
skip_491: rlof
acousticalweaponsdivision: a transparent seal maybe?
mrbisto: lol
acousticalweaponsdivision: do they come double glazed?
skip_491:
mixindown: lol
skip_491: honey glazed
skip_491: rlofffffffff
skip_491: lol
mixindown: skip feed that seal. throw him a fish or a pair of glasses.
acousticalweaponsdivision: and the cat sitting on him
skip_491: lol dont be beatin on my baby seal
skip_491:
skip_491: so any way ben bout that compressor?
jaminuk: yup
skip_491: rloffffffffffff
skip_491: gezzzzzzzzussss ok
paul_ifeanyi has joined the conference.
mixindown: Ben, I had a go at the practical.
jaminuk: yeah?
paul_ifeanyi: am in
mixindown: dont laugh
mixindown: If you go to this link and open the “AC MT Neutron folder”. In there you will find a few sounds that are my first attempt at subtractive synthesis. No laughing now. lol http://www.audiocourses.com/part3/upload/jalevin9
skip_491: sounds good mix
jaminuk: grabbing now
jaminuk: snare is good - got a 909 feel
jaminuk: piano is good also
jaminuk: you can tell its meant to be a piano
jaminuk: also sounds a bit like a rhodes
skip_491: hey ben is that a model number? 909?
mixindown: great
jaminuk: flute is recorder-esque
jaminuk: skip - yes, roland 909
mixindown: Yeah, I know what you mean. difficul that
jaminuk: they're all very good for first attempts!
skip_491: i thought the piano sounded like a rhodes 88 too
jaminuk: pat on the back
mixindown:
skip_491: ^5 mix good job
mpfcoh: like the snare
mpfcoh: can i sample that?
jaminuk: i think everyone struggled with piano and flute sounds
mixindown: well, its a first go. lol mpfcoh
acousticalweaponsdivision: yeah, piano was hard
chemirastudio: I am officially piano free
skip_491: i tried it once it is hard
jaminuk: yes, it is notoriously tricky to replicate piano with subtractive synthesis
acousticalweaponsdivision: still not got anything even resembling a piano
jaminuk: maybe mixindown could share some 'piano tips'?
acousticalweaponsdivision: hence me only uploading my drum sounds so far
mixindown: lol
mixindown: It was purely hit n miss
jaminuk: good hit though
mixindown: really was!
chemirastudio: sounds like drums not piano
mixindown: I just worked my way through it.
mixindown: chemirastudio?
chemirastudio: sorry terrets
chemirastudio: my bad
paul_ifeanyi: am lost already here
paul_ifeanyi: lol
skip_491: rlof
mixindown: you gotta start with the right waveform or your stuffed.
chemirastudio: sine?
mixindown: Saw for me!
chemirastudio: ok
mpfcoh: mixindown - what synth did you use to make those sounds?
mixindown: Neutron
mixindown: Free download in the Benm folder in uploads
jaminuk: mpfcoh - everyone got to use Neutron - a freeware VSTi
mpfcoh: ah, hence the neutron folder
skip_491: havent tried it yet but i will
mixindown: you got it
mpfcoh: where is this uploads folder to be found ben?
chemirastudio: great to fool around with but I'm still challenged with fully understanding
jaminuk: synthesis is a massive discipline in it's own right chemira
mpfcoh: or is that just for C&G students?
chemirastudio: ftp://part3:avsome@ftp.audiocourses.com load that into your address bar
chemirastudio: copy and paste
mrbisto: good move chem
jaminuk: mpfcoh - it's a publically available free synth
mpfcoh: cheers chem
chemirastudio: welcome
mixindown: Ben, I found it a little difficult trying to work out what was going where. The signal through the soft synth.
mixindown: And you only gotta look at some things in there and your in the next version of Dr Who.
jaminuk: how do you mean - actual routing in the synth?
chemirastudio: is it left right top to bottom?
jaminuk: haha yes mixindown - it is 60s sci-fi tastic
mixindown: Well, I mean you start with say a Saw....
skip_491: rlof jam
mixindown: goes through VCO 1.. (I think)
mixindown: etc
jaminuk: IIRC
mixindown: It probably looks very straight forward to you but when its new to you, you get a little lost
jaminuk: by defaults all VCOs will go to the VCA
jaminuk: so VCO 1 & 2 and noise
jaminuk: I think that the the signal goes via the VCF to the VCA
jaminuk: and that you choose what the LFOs affect in the mod matrix
jaminuk: not in my music partition so i can't fire it up and confirm
mixindown: SO ITS VCO VCF VCA?
jaminuk: but thats how i remember it
jaminuk: yes
mixindown: ok
chemirastudio: Did it only output to the left channel or am I unique and did I just embarrass myself?
jaminuk: thats the way most hardwired analogue synths operate
skip_491: lol chem
chemirastudio: I only got a left signal
skip_491: yup mine is always the left channel too
chemirastudio: ok
mixindown: so how does the modulation metrix fit into all this once you have a sound you like.
jaminuk: is 'mono' turned on in the synth?
chemirastudio: I don't recall but
jaminuk: mod matrix essentiall determies what the LFOs will modulate
chemirastudio: opps I think your right
jaminuk: so if LFO modulates the VCO
skip_491: i guess i bettter check mine too then lol
jaminuk: actually....
jaminuk: you all covered this in weeks 3 & 4 or similiar
mixindown: Yeah, waiting for the reading week to go back over it, lol
jaminuk: basically the matrix allows you to 'patch' the LFOs to where you want
skip_491: thats easier said then done
jaminuk: patching an LFO into the VCA would change the volume of the signal
jaminuk: a 'tremolo' effect
jaminuk: LFO into VCO would produce a rising and falling pitch
mixindown: Ah below 20hz signal
jaminuk: and so on
jaminuk: yes LFOs work at very low freqs
mixindown: We here the effect it has on the signal (If I rememer).
skip_491: i also have these in hmm whats the word?
skip_491: alothrithm hmmm
skip_491: ? is that splet right
jaminuk: Neutron will be a very good tool for when you come to re-read the synthesis parts of the course
skip_491: spelled ? lol
mixindown: algorithm
mixindown: lol
skip_491: thats it what mix said lol
skip_491: neat stuff
jaminuk: yeah, for sure
mixindown: it's great to use. Just hard to remember what you did.
skip_491: must take notes lol
jaminuk: did you save your patches?
jaminuk: as instruments?
mixindown: Yes.
skip_491: but u forgot where huh ?
jaminuk: you guys could always swap the save files with each other
jaminuk: have a 'sound swap'
mixindown: I charge for the recorder.
jaminuk: lol
skip_491: laffin
jaminuk: tone like that doesn't come cheap eh mixindown?
chemirastudio: how do you save presets and transfer them to others?
mixindown: its really a refluter
mrbisto: good idea ben
jaminuk: refluter
jaminuk: ncie
jaminuk: chemira
mixindown: chem, save in the dropdown file box on
chemirastudio: yes
jaminuk: I think that from memory toy could save as .fxp or similiar
jaminuk: you
jaminuk: and then bung the files onto the FTP
chemirastudio: .fxp and then send the .fxp
jaminuk: thats it
chemirastudio: does neutron have a load .fxp??
jaminuk: how do you mean?
chemirastudio: or just copy to folder
mixindown: Yes
mixindown: effect program .fxp
jaminuk: yes you can load in .fxp
chemirastudio: I'll try it thanks
quinnersboy: right so well it's quiting time all the best ppl
skip_491: nite quinner
mixindown: see ya quinners
jaminuk: heers
