<Mike_nostradamus> its 1 pm here with snow falling wet but heavy
<Mike_nostradamus> You mean to day you could load that up .where did you find it
<Mike_nostradamus> meant to say
<resol69> I loaded the day you said you posted. Didn't have a problem.
<resol69> It was in your folder
<Mike_nostradamus> I can't see it or load it.Now for some reason my MP3 player is gone ?
<resol69> hold on, I'll check if I can see it.
<Mike_nostradamus> Now I have to bring in the heavy guns to trouble shoot my system.I don't want to get involved just yet until I get a little more into the course

<audiocourses> HI guys
<Mike_nostradamus> this unit here is on its last legs with me
<Mike_nostradamus> hi!
<resol69> Hello
<Mike_nostradamus> wb
<audiocourses> ta..
<audiocourses> So how is everyone.?
<Mike_nostradamus> Not bad !!
<resol69> OK, was up late trying to solve my hardware problem :(
<Mike_nostradamus> you too!!
<audiocourses> Up dear.. what probs ya had?
<audiocourses> Oh dear rather lol
<resol69> Yea, I edit on a MAC. Got the file in my burning to CD from the PC. Can't get the burner to work with the MAC to get it back out.
<audiocourses> The testing times of hardware huh...
<resol69> I wish there was only ONE platform! The MAC is firewire and the PC is USB, I have adapter I'm trying to get to work.
<Mike_nostradamus> They should give you relaxation coupons when they sell you new computers
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> how you doing Ben?
<ben_m> not too bad chris, yourself?
<Mike_nostradamus> When you say platform what do you mean .like sound forge or cubase
<audiocourses> Yeah I@m not bad.. bit sore.
<audiocourses> Rubgy..
<ben_m> i won't ask why... ;)
<ben_m> right
<resol69> So that's like football to us, and your football is our soccer.
<ben_m> no, rugby is a different kettle of fish
<resol69> No padding, right?
<ben_m> rugbyoh right, yeah i see what you mean
<audiocourses> That's right.. no padding.
<resol69> Did you win?
<audiocourses> Yes we did.. 33 - 3
<audiocourses> :)
<Mike_nostradamus> can't be a wuss to play that game
<resol69> Wow, you crushed 'em!
<audiocourses> yeah was good, warm day here today, lots of sweaty men. lol
<audiocourses> No beavers though - sorry Mike
<resol69> It's a nice day here, too. Lots of sun. No beavers here either.
<ben_m> amazingly, its beaver free here too
<Mike_nostradamus> There still sleeping!
<audiocourses> Well fancy that..!
<audiocourses> Sleeping Beavers... good band name
<Mike_nostradamus> The bears should be waking soon!!
<resol69> Right on.
<audiocourses> Walking bears? shiiittt...
<audiocourses> Waking bears...even
<Mike_nostradamus> We have a special tool to scare them off if they bother us.its called apotato canon
<resol69> No bears here either. Just crazy drivers.
<audiocourses> A potato canon... get out of here..
<resol69> I've seen a potato canon. Those things back a punch!
<audiocourses> You fire potatoes at the bears?
<Mike_nostradamus> works with hair spray instaed of gunpowder
<ben_m> sounds a little sureal
<audiocourses> hehe
<audiocourses> sounds bizzare, flying potatoes... ouch!
<Mike_nostradamus> no you shoot the canon into the air if you point to them you could hurt them
<ben_m> you could train the bears to cut them, slice them, dice them and throw em back
<resol69> Maybe the bears think of it as free food!
<audiocourses> lol
<Mike_nostradamus> Now now!!lol
<Mike_nostradamus> now!now!lol
<Mike_nostradamus> I thought i was gone
<Mike_nostradamus> Now you have a spider nancy
<ben_m> or is it an octpopus
<ben_m> octopus
<ben_m> lol
<Mike_nostradamus> I cant get any pictures of anything to come up
* Mike_nostradamus smiles at everyone in the room :-)
<ben_m> go the avatar panel - second box at the bottom of the screen
<resol69> what's on our agenda today?
<audiocourses> ok so lets get some audio stuff done huh? - seems dani and aidan have things on maybe.
<audiocourses> chit chat
<audiocourses> weekly task - de brief
<audiocourses> Resources
<audiocourses> Next week
<resol69> I picked the octopus cos it was purple.
* audiocourses changes topic to 'classical edits'
<Mike_nostradamus> Ok
<audiocourses> So Mike I didn't get to hear your edit..
<audiocourses> you uploaded a zip file?
<Mike_nostradamus> yes I can hear it from my c: drive but not fron audio
<resol69> Well, I'll vouch for Mike, I was able to download and listen. He has a nice voice.
<Mike_nostradamus> yes I loaded a zip.Nancy heard it!
<Mike_nostradamus> Thank thank you very much!!
<audiocourses> great.. for now would u like to mail it to me mike?
<Mike_nostradamus> I dont know where it went
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Hmm resol..
<resol69> Ah, computers. gotta love 'em.
<Mike_nostradamus> you mean in an email
<audiocourses> did your system recognise the file?
<resol69> Yes, was on my computer at work. Downloaded the zip , unzippped and played.
<audiocourses> yes mike an e-mail
<audiocourses> hmmm
<ben_m> do it like this
<ben_m> go to explorer, find mikesnippet, right click, save target as and change extension from .txt to .zip
<ben_m> just opened it up and listened
* Mike_nostradamus has quit IRC (QUIT: User exited)
<ben_m> for some reason it has become a .txt file on the explorer
<resol69> I think we lost Mike. :(
<audiocourses> yes I did this..
<audiocourses> I was hoping mike had sussed this too
<audiocourses> the explorer system needs a slight tweak
<ben_m> come back mike, all is forgiven...
* Guest62496 has joined #audiocourses
<audiocourses> Mike?
<resol69> HMM..mike has turned into an alien?
<ben_m> is that you john wayne?
* Guest62496 is now known as mike_nostradamus
<audiocourses> ahh there he is..
<audiocourses> wb mike
<mike_nostradamus> went out!!
<resol69> take me to your leader, mike!
<audiocourses> Mike did you read what nancy and ben said about the file?
<mike_nostradamus> I'll have to try that file search later toosensitive from my end
<audiocourses> Mike..
<audiocourses> Do you rememebr when we ran the teat last week?
<audiocourses> You saved a file but were careful to choose the correct extension..?
<mike_nostradamus> say again
<audiocourses> <ben_m> go to explorer, find mikesnippet, right click, save target as and change extension from .txt to .zip
<mike_nostradamus> yes I did that but still comes out text
<resol69> Maybe it's the evil gremilin inside your computer.
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> Its got to be something simple from my end
<mike_nostradamus> What was the responce from my snippet?
<audiocourses> I like it Mike..
<resol69> I liked it, but I would lower the volume on your voice a little
<audiocourses> The vocal delivery is good..
<ben_m> i like it. could have done with editing the end out (i.e. room noise) and possibly gating your vocal slightly. Good radio voice though!
<resol69> I think you could do voiceovers mike!
<audiocourses> I may have downloaded the wrong one though.. as there is about 8 seconds of "noise" at the end Mike
<mike_nostradamus> I did'nt know whwat to put down that what I tryed
<audiocourses> Yeah my thoughts exactly ben
<mike_nostradamus> the noise It was'nt there when I listened to it .I went and loaded the wrong file!
<audiocourses> ahh that would explain it then
<audiocourses> What was the hardest part of the activity for you Mike? Resol?
<mike_nostradamus> I'll try again later
<resol69> Taking so much OUT. There was a lot I wanted to keep in, but didn't have any time left.
<audiocourses> You mean vocal?
<audiocourses> Or music?
<resol69> Music
<mike_nostradamus> For me was the voice I wanted it to sound like a commercial.I used some compression 1.5 to1
<resol69> Also, once I had the parts I wanted to keep, finding spots to edit smoothly
<mike_nostradamus> nancy did you upload yours yet
<resol69> No, I can
<audiocourses> Yes mike, from a technical point of view there are what could be termed as some "errors"
<resol69> meant can't got a hardware issue. Will solve today, I am determined!
<mike_nostradamus> I see your drift!!!
<audiocourses> The most obvioue being "clipping"
<audiocourses> this happens at its worst at 17.3 to 15.5 secs
<audiocourses> oops
<audiocourses> this happens at its worst at 17.3 to 17.5 secs
<audiocourses> do you know what I mean by "clipping"?
<mike_nostradamus> You mean the volume was to high or I used to much input
<audiocourses> yes, "clipping" is when the signal becomes Square wave..
<resol69> So more compression may have worked?
<audiocourses> it means the signal level has exceeded the available bandwidth
<audiocourses> i.e. too hot
<audiocourses> It could be a combination of things...
<mike_nostradamus> But is that from input or output
<audiocourses> compression could have cuased it
<ben_m> Also, I feel that 'ducking' could have been used - i don't know if anyone used this technique but this is commonly heard on radio broadcasts
<audiocourses> Yes ben...
<audiocourses> let do ducking in one sec...
<audiocourses> back to the clipping though for a min
<audiocourses> Mike..
<audiocourses> are you aware of the term singal path and gain structure?
<audiocourses> signal path that is...
<mike_nostradamus> Not really
<audiocourses> well audio equipment is basically "chained" together..
<audiocourses> It's in your interest to view it as a series of links..
<audiocourses> try to picture that in your mind...
<audiocourses> i.e. box 1 goes to box 2 input etc..
<audiocourses> this can be digital or not..
<audiocourses> it really is essential to adjust the gain of each input and output for optimum performance
<audiocourses> for exmaple if they microphone signal has too much gain, and "clips" this will stay "clipped" throughout the system.
<mike_nostradamus> Yes I see what you mean we call it input output impedence
<audiocourses> Though I suspect this is not the case in your example...
<audiocourses> You could have a clipping mic signal "mixed" with the audio signal and still be below the system bandwith..
<mike_nostradamus> but if I was clipping should my light told me that.
<audiocourses> No i/o impedance is different Mike
<mike_nostradamus> OK
<audiocourses> Yes, which is why I suspect this clipping came from over zelous use of the gain-make up of the comp
<audiocourses> essential compression is a square wave producer.
<mike_nostradamus> maybe point me to a ref site to read up on
<audiocourses> sure will do..
<mike_nostradamus> I usesd the comp from my platform
<audiocourses> do you understand though that is you look at the waveform you will see it become square in places?
<resol69> You over-compensated your compression. When you compress, you ride the gain to make up for level loss. Should be a gain dial on your compressor
<mike_nostradamus> my manual one there is on my worksattion its one dial
<audiocourses> Don't worry we all do it! lol
<audiocourses> I just want you to understand "clipping" and square wave...
<audiocourses> then you will be able to identify it in the future
<mike_nostradamus> I just used a plain jane compressor ,the first time I tried it out.See i'm learning again
<audiocourses> Clipping will kill speakers..
<mike_nostradamus> Chrish are you saying if I let it go to square wave I may get clipng
<audiocourses> clipping... IS a square wave...
<audiocourses> i.e. the signal stays as hot as the system allows for a period of time...
<mike_nostradamus> I'm starting to understand
<audiocourses> what do u use for a wave editor? i.e one where you can visualise the waveform?
<mike_nostradamus> I can use music studio 7 which is my best(should say the one i like the best
<audiocourses> i suggest you call up your file... (i'l send it to you if you like) and have a good look at the audio in that visual representation of it.
<mike_nostradamus> I tryed to check out pro edit and no luck
<audiocourses> you will be able to see where this clipping is taking place..
<mike_nostradamus> I dont want to right now in case I disconnect again
<resol69> Mike, do you have level meter for each track on screen? Mike turns red when it's clipping, in addtion to the wave being square.
<audiocourses> I don't mean now mike
<mike_nostradamus> Ok chrish
<resol69> Meant MINE turns red. sorry.
<mike_nostradamus> yes I have level meters for each track
<resol69> Wouldn't want mike to turn red. LOL
<audiocourses> that's a good point resol you should get an indaction with most gear.
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> now one more technical error... (sorry mike only got yours to go on), not singling you out :))
<mike_nostradamus> pick on mike week thats alright!!!!
<audiocourses> "DC offset"........... ben, wanna do this one?
<ben_m> sure
<mike_nostradamus> Good one
<resol69> Hmm. not familiar with that.
<ben_m> ok, when we have 'silence' the speaker should be at rest
<mike_nostradamus> I see it on my edit prog
<ben_m> if you were to look at 'silence' on a digital audio editor you should see that the signal is parallel with the DC line (maybe marked with the infinity sign)
<mike_nostradamus> yes
<ben_m> in some circumstances there may be an offset, this can be caused by many things like equipment plugged into different power circuits
<ben_m> no this offset means that 'silence' would be a certain amount of dBs above or below the DC line in the editor - so in effect the speaker would be working to play silence as the cone would be at a static position but not at rest
<mike_nostradamus> is this where you would use a power conditioner
<ben_m> you following this
<ben_m> well, a power conditioner may not solve the problem as it would be more to do with different equipment with their own earths etc
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<ben_m> so, if you were to record with a DC offset then the signal would not be correctly recorded as it would be offset to one side of the DC line
<ben_m> this is not particularly good for your speakers - again it is similiar to playing a square wave constantly if a silence with DC offset it being played
<ben_m> it will burn out those coils quicker than you can say "DC Offset"
<ben_m> so audio editors have a facility to remove this
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> is that a bad thing?what do you do to fix it
<audiocourses> so true
* resol69 has quit IRC (Connection reset by peer)
<ben_m> an audio editor can analyse the recording/input for potential DC offset either before/during recording or after recording
<ben_m> and then 'shift' the waveform to compensate
<ben_m> if you zoom into samples you may have, you may see that the silence in the sample is not falling on the DC line
<ben_m> also, when using samples recorded with DC offset it can cause clicks and pops when trying to integrate with others as there DC levels are not the same
<ben_m> does that make sense
<audiocourses> Rocket science huh mike?
<mike_nostradamus> yes i think is this like aprocessor like de hissing
<mike_nostradamus> or denoiser
<ben_m> not quite, its a little bit more purely mathematical than that
<ben_m> dehissing and denoising work by attenuating certain freqs and/or creating noise profiles which are eliminated through phase inversion
<mike_nostradamus> Is this a feature on most good platforms
<ben_m> DC offset functions can be found on nearly all audio editing software packages
<mike_nostradamus> I see
<ben_m> imagine a sine wave with a 5dB amplitude
<mike_nostradamus> Great i'll have to check it out
* Guest61884 has joined #audiocourses
* Guest61884 is now known as resol69
<audiocourses> wb
<ben_m> it should be symmetrical in an audio editor - 5dB above and below the line - if the DC offset was 1dB, then it would be +6dB on the positive side and -4dB on the positive cycle
<ben_m> it would be shifted 1dB
<resol69> Sorry, I crashed and had to restart. :( Have ordered DSL :)
<audiocourses> good move ;)
<resol69> For sure. Will solve a lot of problems!
<mike_nostradamus> Is this something used a lot in bigger studios or just something to keep in mind
<audiocourses> I would say very good practise.
<audiocourses> at any level.
<ben_m> it should be used throughout the recording industry - from home recordist to abbey road
<mike_nostradamus> Ok dookee
<mike_nostradamus> did you get that nancy
<audiocourses> Ironically I have "examined" some commercial releases that have had this DC component in them!
<audiocourses> tut tut!
<resol69> Some of it. I'll read the transcript also.
<mike_nostradamus> I think it was a good point maybe ben can chat with you for a minute I have to leave a minute
<mike_nostradamus> I'll be back soon
<audiocourses> Well Like nancy said the transcript should do the job..
<audiocourses> Can we get into your ducking Ben?>
<resol69> Yes, no problem.
<ben_m> yes sure
<audiocourses> Great... I love this.
<ben_m> shall i start?
<audiocourses> go for it
<ben_m> ok <revs engine>
<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> ducking is a technique used extensively on radio broadcasts
<ben_m> you've probably heard a DJ talking over a song at some point and the song decreasing in level to compensate for the DJs voice
<ben_m> have you heard that?
<resol69> yup. I'm with you
<ben_m> well, ducking is essentially an automated way of performing this in much the same way as compression is riding the faders
<mike_nostradamus> I'm back and up to par
<ben_m> so, you have the main signal (i.e. music)
<ben_m> did u catch the start of this mike?
<mike_nostradamus> yes
<ben_m> ok, so we have the 'main' signal as well as an additional input (voice for instance)
<mike_nostradamus> I read it all
<ben_m> the ducker is set to attenuate the main signal by a certain amount when the other signal is present
<ben_m> so for instance the music could be told to drop by 6dB when the other signal is present
<resol69> pretty nifty
<ben_m> this obviously prevents the overall signal from sounding 'messy'
<mike_nostradamus> Is this like voice talkover
<ben_m> yeah, you will hear it a lot on FM radio stations
<ben_m> especially when DJs carry on talking throughout the songs intro and end
<ben_m> which happens a lot in the UK
<resol69> here too, very annoying!
<ben_m> yes!!
<audiocourses> Sometimes it's more subtle wherby the attack and release times are fine tuned..
<ben_m> but that drop in the level of the music is usually due to a ducking processor - sometimes duckers are built into other processors
<mike_nostradamus> We only have three stns here
<ben_m> yes, its not always a case of quiet-LOUD-quiet
<ben_m> Beaver FM?
<audiocourses> You can hear it clearly on internet radio too mike..
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> Good one Ben
<mike_nostradamus> lol
<audiocourses> You also hear it on the TV Mike.
<ben_m> again you can find software 'duckers'
<mike_nostradamus> I get ya!! only three of those here
<mike_nostradamus> htey can be irratating at times
<ben_m> mike - canada sounds more and more like england!
<audiocourses> :)
<mike_nostradamus> We got it from somewhere
<audiocourses> lol
<mike_nostradamus> This ducking is there a feature on the platform for it
<ben_m> many audio editors may have it as part of their compressor/gate function and there are certainly DX and VSTi plugins that cater for ducking
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<resol69> got it
<mike_nostradamus> a way to remember this one is to duck your head(music)to let the voice go over right!!
<audiocourses> like a bear and a potato
<ben_m> lol - yeah, i guess thats one way!
<ben_m> as long as you dont start ducking in public everytime you hear a voiceover!
<mike_nostradamus> right
<audiocourses> unless you wanna of course..
<resol69> You guys are wacky
<audiocourses> Ok so thats so great technical chat there.. things to ensure you explore further and get "nailed"
<mike_nostradamus> does it make sense looking at it that way and the bears and beavers dont move when I yell at them they have built in filters for my voice
<audiocourses> jesus...
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<audiocourses> sorry fell of my chair for a sec.
<audiocourses> back now.
<resol69> lol
<mike_nostradamus> for some reason i'm not gettin all communications just some of them!
<mike_nostradamus> last thing I seen was Jesus!!
<audiocourses> Those flters I guess mike>?
<audiocourses> Nancy will we get to hear your work soon then?
<resol69> Yes, I will work it out today. I have a plan to highjack my boyfreind's PC and install a fire wire cared. (evil laugh)
<resol69> Meant card, jeez i'm bad!
<audiocourses> hehe
<audiocourses> So moving on then guys..
<mike_nostradamus> ok
<audiocourses> The quesiton answers were again very good mostly
<audiocourses> and there is evidence of more interaction..
<resol69> And are we getting better at self reflection :)
<audiocourses> nancy you posted a model posting... very neat and consise answers... the examiners would love that.
<resol69> (I'm blushing)
<audiocourses> Mike you found some great stuff too
<audiocourses> And I take it you found the testicle removing interesting?
<resol69> THAT was scary!
<audiocourses> for the Castrato...
<audiocourses> shit... isn't it?
<mike_nostradamus> I thought it was a joke I guess they took singing to othe r heights
<resol69> Must be where michael jackson got his inspiration
<audiocourses> hehe..
<mike_nostradamus> I found classical part interesting went over a lot of mat.
<ben_m> he's always grabbing his "where they gone?"
<audiocourses> lol ben
<audiocourses> LMAO
<resol69> That explains it, ben. LOL
<audiocourses> oh man..
<audiocourses> Nancy, just this to be sure of:
<audiocourses> What combinations of instruments are used in classical music?
<audiocourses> Orchestra
<audiocourses> Orchestra & chorus
<audiocourses> Orchestra/chorus/soloists
<audiocourses> Soloist & orchestra
<audiocourses> String quartet
<audiocourses> Soloist (vocal or instrumental) and piano accompaniment
<audiocourses> Solo instrument
<resol69> A-ha, I see now.
<audiocourses> Do you listen to much classical music?
<resol69> some, I was a flute player in high school. More into metal now, though
<audiocourses> A question cropped up before about the Harp... man those pedals are noisy! much like pedals on a piano.
<mike_nostradamus> Well I listen but not a clue for theory except what I learned this week
<audiocourses> Yeah I like it myself.... studied it for a while a few years ago..
<audiocourses> Anyway good stuff... pity we didn;t get some action from aidan and dani.. anyone seen em?
<resol69> nope , not a sign.
<mike_nostradamus> no last time was a day or two ago
<audiocourses> ok.. ben how were replies to the questions you set?
<ben_m> pretty good. i don't think there was an awful lot from aidan if i remember.
<resol69> slackers! :)
<ben_m> lol
<audiocourses> Yes I know adian has had lots of problems with aptops and internet connections, though he did say he would be here today.
<ben_m> dani did a bit but nancy and mike were the stars of the week
<ben_m> give yourself a pat on the back
<audiocourses> That's true!
<resol69> We're the coolest, MIKE!
<audiocourses> indeed.
<ben_m> and a gold star
* ben_m slaps everyone in the room.
<audiocourses> oh yeah
<ben_m> on the back of course
<audiocourses> hehe had me worried there
<mike_nostradamus> yes indeed pep pep talihoe
<audiocourses> OK so this week will see many many questions again..
<audiocourses> RT moves into equipment
<audiocourses> this is a three week bash!
<mike_nostradamus> A little less I hope tee hee!!!
<audiocourses> Nope Mike..
<audiocourses> probably the same I'm afraid..
<resol69> Piling on the work, eh?
<audiocourses> I'm keen to ensuyre saturation at this end of the course..
<audiocourses> yes..
<audiocourses> better to have things front ended..
<resol69> very true..
<audiocourses> leaving space for reflection and sumamry..and mock papers
<audiocourses> so expect lots of tough questions..
<audiocourses> Ben what's your topics this coming week?
<ben_m> synthesis 1
<audiocourses> ye ha..
<ben_m> its a 2 weeker
<audiocourses> cool
<audiocourses> Wish I still had my DX7
<ben_m> yes, 'that' piano sounf
<ben_m> sound
<audiocourses> A milestone of achievment
<audiocourses> :)
<audiocourses> 83 I think.. was even advertised at the time as a Milestone (which it was of course)
<mike_nostradamus> Well maybe I'll find out how my yamaha keyboards work
<audiocourses> what ya got Mike?
<mike_nostradamus> I have a psy730 and psr 510 yamaha keyboard and casio plain gm midi board
<audiocourses> tidy
<mike_nostradamus> that was a PSR 730
<mike_nostradamus> how about you Nancy any?
<resol69> just a casio w/MIDI
<mike_nostradamus> Do you play it in band
<resol69> no, got it to practice MIDI w/Pro Tools. Not too good at it yet. I was actually thinking of picking up the flute again.
* audiocourses drinks some water..
<audiocourses> I recorded some flute on Friday...
<resol69> How did that go?
* audiocourses says try the /action command
<mike_nostradamus> Alright!I started a while back playing and recording midi with my boards when I went in to studio I just pushed start and the band started playing.left me free to do something else like mix
<audiocourses> it went really well, she was a good player for a young woman.
<audiocourses> Helps if they play well.
<resol69> Makes our job a lot easier!
