<resol69> Hello. Have a good week?
<audiocourses> Hey Nancy, yeah pretty good thanks, busy one, but I kinda like that. How about yourself?
<resol69> Not bad, Busy at the day job, so not much recording. Looking forward to the coffeehouse gig tomorrow night.
<audiocourses> Yeah soe light relief huh..? you are in marketing huh?
<resol69> Yes, life insurance. Too much excitment. I did get promoted last week, though. I used to work at ad agencies, now I'm on the client side, like it a lot better!
<audiocourses> lol...
<resol69> You're in audio full-time?
<audiocourses> well sounds like it might have some social aspects that make it have fun periods.
<audiocourses> Yes I'm in audio education full-time..in the studio most days..
<audiocourses> Never ever seems to be enough time though, i could do with 10 days in a week..
<resol69> Can't wait ti I can word full-time! I was chatting w/mike last night and he got a really bad storm. wouldn't be surprised if his power is out.
<resol69> meant "work"
<audiocourses> Yeah he sent an e-mail stating that, said you guys had a good chat. He's had some troubles recently it seems.
<resol69> Said he got a new system, though. I think I'm going to break down and upgrade to a new MAC pretty soon.
<audiocourses> Oh really, you always been a MAC fan then?
<resol69> Yes, since I started in advertising, I had a MAC even at work. Then when I got started in audio, MAC was the standard around here. I just think they're easier to use and install stuff.
<resol69> I guess MACs aren't big over there.
<audiocourses> Personally, I would say the same about a PC, I guess it is a case of what you are used to. MACs traditionally were the backbone of the "creative" industries, certainly graphics. The audio world also started using them extensively, but with the widespread popularity of the PC, in other inducstries it has meant there has been a significant growth rate
<audiocourses> The means a bigger potential market and the audio world can feed off al the large research invested into the PC.
<audiocourses> I've used both systems to a point, and I shamlessly go with the masses lol
<audiocourses> cheaper!
<audiocourses> more programmes..
<audiocourses> more devlopment..
<audiocourses> terrible huh?
<audiocourses> lol
<resol69> I hear that. LOL
<audiocourses> I'm right up Bill Gates arse!
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Feeding his empire...
<resol69> That's why I have and MAC AND a PC!

<audiocourses> Ahh dualistic huh...
<audiocourses> Batting for both teams...
<audiocourses> smart.
<resol69> Tyring not to take sides :)
<audiocourses> Welcome ben
<resol69> Hi Ben
<ben_m> hi chris&nancy
<audiocourses> How are things there Ben? where there is..
<audiocourses> wherever "there" is..
<ben_m> still in truro 'til after this workshop!
<ben_m> we got a low turn out this week!
<resol69> are you traveling Ben?
<audiocourses> It's an interesting world wqe live in when we clear the contents of our homes, with the exception of our PC...
<audiocourses> hehe
<audiocourses> I did the same when I moved last year... PC was the last thing out...
<ben_m> nancy: no, i'm going to stay with some friends for a couple of days
<ben_m> chris: the PC has to go last innit?
* Guest40330 has joined #audiocourses
<audiocourses> Ben, need a bed? plenty room here.
<audiocourses> And yes PC last out.. oh yes.
<ben_m> no, sorted for a few days, then I'll reassess
<ben_m> thanks v much 4 offer though
* audiocourses changes topic to 'PC vs MAC discuss'
<audiocourses> We got a guest
<audiocourses> Nancy how do you find the support for MAC products?
* Guest40330 smiles at everyone in the room :-)
<audiocourses> Yeah who are you smiler? do we now you? Please identify yourself.
<resol69> We have Apple stores. There are a few other electronic stores that sell stuff. I found an site online that sells parts for older macs. There are a lot of MAC support sites run by fans also.
* audiocourses asks guest to identify
<resol69> It's probably Aidan in disguise.
<resol69> It's probably Aidan in disguise.
<audiocourses> I'm going to kick the guest v.soon
<audiocourses> So nancy.. you got your classical edit done..
* Guest40330 was kicked by audiocourses (audiocourses)
<audiocourses> Get out!
<resol69> I did, but I'm waiting for new equipment to come in so I can post it. My removable hard drive was corrupting the Mp3. Very odd.
<audiocourses> Bllody technology.
<resol69> I found and old modem online I can hook up to the MAC
<resol69> I tried to pull from different parts of the song, instead of just cutting 31 seconds into it.
<audiocourses> h that's right you were talking about ADSL before...Ben converted me... I get fed up with his crusading..
<ben_m> ha! the ADSL crusader!
<audiocourses> Yes that was the idea really.. lots of edits.
<resol69> I was going to hook up the DSL, but since I'm moving next month, the company would treat that as canceling and charge me big fee. How rude!
<audiocourses> What's the costing like for the service nancy..?
<audiocourses> It's about 30 bucks here a month
<resol69> It's 50/month here.(US) If you cancel before 12 months, that's 150.
<ben_m> thats pretty steep
<ben_m> is that cable or dsl?
<audiocourses> we have similar companies who hand out great penalties also.. for cancellation..
<resol69> DSL, but they're both around the same. It's not too big here yet.
<audiocourses> ? really.. I thought we were dragging our heels in that area in comparision to you guys.
<resol69> I use my ethernet at work to download stuff.
<resol69> Businesses use it, but consumers don't want to pay the $. AOL is the biggest ISP and they are just getting into broadband.
<ben_m> i think generally america has a good infrastructure in terms of the cable (they've obviously had cable TV etc for yonks)
<ben_m> we have a very poor cable rollout but ADSL is taking off as it works on normal analogue phone lines
<audiocourses> Yes the AOL / Time Warner hand feed the innocent here too.
<resol69> I actually had a cable internet hook up for a few months. They were working on the system, so I couldn't get on a lot. When I did, it was great.
<ben_m> i think with cable you more subsceptible to contention ratios and the like
<resol69> It was very frustrating especially for the price, so I went back to dial up,
<resol69> I wonder where everyone else is? Slackers. :)
<audiocourses> Yes I'm fully converetd.. typically I work online so much I use it for main entertainment and news now also, streaming content rocks.
<audiocourses> Mike informed me he might have difficulties
<ben_m> yes, i use it exclusively for news
<ben_m> dani has been quiet of late
<audiocourses> Yeah dani had some probs also, big crash.
<ben_m> oh right, didnt realise
<ben_m> the curse of city and guilds
<ben_m> <evil laugh>
<audiocourses> I think that may have been last week though
* audiocourses furrows brow
<ben_m> sorry, got a bit nosferatu there
<audiocourses> lol
<audiocourses> Nancy you did an excellent job with those questions.
<resol69> Thanks, I'm more in my element with the recording questions. How were the tech questions Ben?
<ben_m> good, you covered the fundamentals of each concept, its just a shame that others didnt manage to get answers down
<resol69> Slackers again!
<ben_m> ha!
<audiocourses> Yes give them a kick nancy..
<resol69> I think I'll go with a digital board when I get one. At the studio I work at we have analog with only fader automation. We were in the middle of a mix, with a session the next day. I had to write down all the settings on the board!
<ben_m> ouch - you could always take a polaroid shot
<resol69> <I'm kicking everyone now>
<audiocourses> lol
<resol69> Good idea ben,
<ben_m> its a concept used quite often in many studios (over here anyway) Beats draining the ink

<audiocourses> hehe
<audiocourses> shit that's so funny mike
<resol69> It's the weekly gig at Kulaks, the one with the webcast. Different artists play a few songs, set up keeps me on my toes.
<audiocourses> aidan sneak me in the back can ya man?
<resol69> The poor beavers!
<audiocourses> nancy I'm gonna try to watch that webcast... will we be hearing your sound broadcast?
<aido> cant even get a ticket myself..and Im working for the sponsors RBS
<audiocourses> aidan.. wow, hot demand
<mike_nostradamus> nancy how is the earthquake situation since your last ,one a few days
<resol69> Yes, tomorrow night. But I think the webcast gets transfered to mono by the time you hear it.
<resol69> Not bad, Mike. It was small, but since I was sleeping it woke me out of bed! We were clost to the center of it.
<resol69> Anybody else get earthquakes?
<audiocourses> shit not here! unless england loose and ben comes to work.
<mike_nostradamus> thats not for me.especially if I'm working underground.we get them but there man made with large blasts
<ben_m> hehe, no i'm not too bothered about the international games - if liverpool lose on the other hand....
<ben_m> ...the seismographs gonna go off the scale
<resol69> That's a tough gig, Mike!
<mike_nostradamus> yes i work 4000 ft straight to hell and a mile in
<resol69> You're brave, I'd freak out!
<aido> good man ..Im a Liverpool fan myself..saw them at home to Bolton a few weeks ago..10 new players in the summer and we might yet win something
<mike_nostradamus> but you get used to it
<audiocourses> man sounds cary
<audiocourses> lets do some audio stuff huh?
<ben_m> we just need a winger, 2 full backs and a different style of play - not asking too much am i?
<ben_m> ok - audio!
<mike_nostradamus> we have trucks bigger that truck you have on highways
<aido> Damien Duff..its our only hope
<ben_m> duff! wouldnt mind a bit of that!
<ben_m> in the footballing sense
<aido> He did well tonight..scored one
* audiocourses loks at nancy and mike, fancy a beer guys?
<ben_m> hehe
<ben_m> ok, audio it is
<resol69> Surel. LOL
<mike_nostradamus> Nancy thinking of mother boards the one I have has all indie cards if one fails I only have to replace that one

<audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> groan...lol
<mike_nostradamus> got it!!hehe
<audiocourses> well done Mike..
<audiocourses> :)
<aido> No-just a MiniDisc 8 track-Yamaha
<audiocourses> 8 track cool!
<audiocourses> Just posted a message about bouncing....
<audiocourses> ever have to "bounce" Aidan...?
<mike_nostradamus> Hey that "more tracks than I got mine is only analog
<mike_nostradamus> Bouncing is that same as ping pong?
<audiocourses> yes Mike.
<mike_nostradamus> ok then !
<audiocourses> I answered your forum messge
<mike_nostradamus> thanks I haven't been there yet!
<audiocourses> I'm interested to hear what you have done with your 8 track aidan?
<aido> Bouncing on a Minidisc is good-really very little noise .The Yamaha is a little tedious in saving the original tracks but worth itn
<audiocourses> cool..
<audiocourses> quite an art to bouncing. Ben can you do a run down on Bouncing, I know mike is interested.
<ben_m> ok
<audiocourses> great
<ben_m> bouncing is as you probably know a method of being able to 'squeeze' more tracks out of your recorder
<ben_m> it usually requires one 'free' track to bounce onto
<aido> I havent got a lot of finished work-just bits and pieces/I got a Behringer multi band compressor for a good price recently and Ive been experimenting with it.Hard to know when to leave it outogm
<ben_m> so for instance, on a 4 track, if you had guitar, bass and drums on 3 channels, you could bounce down the bass and drums onto a spare channel - this would then free up the previous bass and drum tracks
<ben_m> of course, there are some important issues with bouncing
<audiocourses> yes do go on ben..
<ben_m> On analogue systems you can introduce more noise into the system with bouncing
<mike_nostradamus> how about cross channeling?
<ben_m> any noise inherent in your system will effectively be 'summed' together raising the noise levels
<ben_m> also, you are committed to the mixing decisions you make during bouncing
<audiocourses> that's a very important point, committed.
<ben_m> you cant go back and change levels once you have rubbed over the original tracks
<ben_m> so, bouncing should only be done when you are 100% happy with the relative levels of the tracks
<mike_nostradamus> where does the noise come from and is this like a white noise
<ben_m> the noise is basically any noisein your system - if there was, for instance a 50Hz hum in your system it would be doubled up when you bounce
<ben_m> i.e. the noise is apparent on each track.
<mike_nostradamus> yes I see !
<ben_m> obviously this is a basic example
<audiocourses> but a good one ben..
<ben_m> but you can see the implications of bouncing in terms of the noise floor
<audiocourses> noise is accumulative.
<ben_m> noise gates are useful when bouncing
<audiocourses> three tracks, each track has it's own noice add them up you get three lots of noise.
<aido> having used a cassette 4 track I can assure you noise does build up.As benm pointed out you are committed to what you bounce and its often hard to fit in new tracksj
<ben_m> and of course all these summed signals are much harder to process - any processing will affect the whole signal rather than the component parts
<mike_nostradamus> can that be a hiss from tape?
<ben_m> yes, tape 4-tracks are notorious
<ben_m> yes mie
<ben_m> mike
<ben_m> that is the most common
<mike_nostradamus> so can you use dolby or dbx
<audiocourses> Signal to noise ratios should be a priority throughout audio chains.
<ben_m> yes, although you will sacrifice some extreme high end
<ben_m> as chris points out s/n/r and gain structure are important concepts when recording
<mike_nostradamus> i was just about to say
<ben_m> getting a nice level is very important
<ben_m> nice being using as much of the tape/bit rate as possible
<aido> I agree.I often find noise creeps up on you-say using some pedals on a bass or putting a keyboard through the same pedals
<audiocourses> yeah aidan for sure!... pain..
<ben_m> yes, pedals can add noise, especially if distortion is involved
<ben_m> and compression will often bring out some of worst in your signal!
<mike_nostradamus> yes I see that live for sure
<ben_m> if not properly recorded that is
<aido> funny thats what Ive found with compresion its nice and beefy but emphasises any noise in the chain
<audiocourses> Yes Aidan... do you understand why?
<ben_m> yes, so important things to remember are S/N/R and gating occuring BEFORE compression
<resol69> Compression raises the noise floor.
<aido> well its raising low levels an raising noise with them
<ben_m> exactly aidan
<audiocourses> yup.. it's reducing the dynamic range (the opposite of a gate, which expands the dynamic range)
<audiocourses> if the dynamic range is reduced the difference between the loud sections and quite secitons is reduced.. then you turn it all up. So the quit bits (noise) are loud.
<mike_nostradamus> you mean compression is opposite of gate
<audiocourses> yes Mike
<mike_nostradamus> ahh!
<audiocourses> exact opposite
<mike_nostradamus> SO my dbx expander is a gate
<audiocourses> a gate is where the expander
<audiocourses> has be set to expand beyond the lower limits of the system..
<audiocourses> i.e you can't hear it anymore.

<audiocourses> yes Mike good devices
<audiocourses> beats me/
<aido> aido here--back on line
<audiocourses> right on aido
<audiocourses> you got that noise things and gates man?
<audiocourses> and bens cool run down on bouncing?
<mike_nostradamus> i wonder if I'm logged on with 2 computers in audiocourses has anything to do with guests
<resol69> Got it.
<audiocourses> would be those beavers following you..
<ben_m> hehe
<aido> yeah--I find compression very tempting but I can see it should be used sparingly.Every effort to get a good strong sound/signal first is better.i
<ben_m> compression is important to 'even' out prominent sounds in a mix
<mike_nostradamus> no!! Iwas reading the forum and on this chat site at same time with diff computers on same login name
<mike_nostradamus> bck to comp
<aido> No Mike its more likely me.Each time I loose the conection I come back in as a guest
<mike_nostradamus> OK
<resol69> I use compression when recording rock singers. Tough to record 'screamers' without it.
<resol69> For me, anyway!
<audiocourses> I use compression everywhere.. I'm an addict
<mike_nostradamus> on compression can you do all tracks in one shot or do you have to do one at atime
<audiocourses> both
<audiocourses> the secret with compression is "little and often"
<audiocourses> unless a desired effect is wanted
<mike_nostradamus> when you say little do you mean do little on one track then more at whole finished product
<aido> Isnt everything compressed these days
<audiocourses> I'm going to set a compression task soon actually..
<audiocourses> aido, most "pop" has been since tape recorders have been around.
<audiocourses> just more extreme now
<audiocourses> at mastering stage, and more efficient (if you can call it that)
<mike_nostradamus> Do you use compression more on tape tha digital?
<audiocourses> tape comes with compression to some extent....
<audiocourses> the point with compresison and tape/dig is that tape nly has a snr of about 65dB at best
<audiocourses> where as 16bit 44.1kHz has 98dB
<audiocourses> big difference..
<ben_m> yes driving a tape machine too hard will incur a 'natural' compression - some attribute this to analogue 'warmth'
<audiocourses> so if recording classical music, you can't fit a wide dynamic on the medium
<audiocourses> generally pop doesn't use much dynamic rnage anyway
<audiocourses> as aido stated
<audiocourses> in fact some recent "pop" tunes only have a dynamic range of abour 2 - 3 db..
<audiocourses> just the last bits in the digital world..
<mike_nostradamus> I'm going to shoot a tail in the spokes compression on a wav file how is it differrent than compression on mp3 file may sound stupid but any similarities?
<audiocourses> that is entriely different
<aido> It seems to me that pop suffers as a result-it often doesnt soung good against say folk music as the range is too narrow particularly on a good hi fi
<audiocourses> mp3 compression is file size reduction
<audiocourses> audio compression is dynamic range reduction
<mike_nostradamus> so mp3 is shortening of the file
<audiocourses> you still have to reduce the file since (with mp3 algorithm) on a reduced dynamic rnage(compressed audio) file.
<audiocourses> oops that didnt make sense..
<audiocourses> i mis typed
<mike_nostradamus> wav is thinning of the wav if you look atit in the wav editor
<audiocourses> yes mp3 is reducing file size.. not dynamic range
<audiocourses> ?
<mike_nostradamus> Now I get it!
<audiocourses> cool
<audiocourses> mp3 attempts to remove the bits that it thinks you cant hear
<audiocourses> thus reducing the amount of information
<audiocourses> ben can you carry on a sec. brb
<mike_nostradamus> i experimented with Mp3 in the last few days and your right music doesn't sound the same even when its reconverted
<ben_m> yes, there are concepts such as masking which allow the file size to be lessened
<aido> b
<ben_m> for instance, if your guitar is buzzing very quietly, you may not hear that when the guitar is chugging away
<resol69> I see what you mean..
<ben_m> so MP3 will take away these things that we can't hear
<ben_m> this is called 'perceptual coding'
<ben_m> however, some people, if not many, can hear many MP3 artefacts, especially on HF sources such as cymbals
<mike_nostradamus> can we get it back?
<ben_m> no, MP3 is known as 'lossy' compression
<ben_m> this means the data is gone
* Guest79012 has joined #audiocourses
* Guest82607 has joined #audiocourses
<ben_m> there is also 'lossless' compression which keeps all data but works in a way more akin to winzip
<mike_nostradamus> so using an expander is useless
<ben_m> i.e. working on a binary rather than audio level
<audiocourses> back
* aido has quit IRC (Ping Timeout)
<ben_m> an expander isnt useless in normal circumstances, but when going to mp3 you are allowing algorithims to make listening 'decisions' for you
* Guest79012 has quit IRC (Timed Out)
* Guest82607 has quit IRC (Timed Out)
<audiocourses> an expander will expand the dynamic range of an mp3 file yes..or any audio file. But you have a confusing with mp3 compresison and audio compression.
<ben_m> read up on precedence effect, haas effect. and masking tones for more scientific information
<mike_nostradamus> yes I know the diff now!
